Bloody Fireworks!!!

Sonolanona · 31/10/2025 18:47

I wish they were banned except for official displays.

Every night this week someone down my street has let them off.Tonight my neighbour is letting off huge ones and it sounds like we are under attack. They didn't have the consideration to warn anyone.

The dog is a quivering mess, and the cat is awol, and my elderly neighbour with dementia is terrified. 😟

I just wish the general public couldn't buy them!

Does it bother you that horses are terrified, farm animals are terrified, wildlife like birds suffer, babies are scared, and most people don't want to listen to bombs going off for nights on end

I referred to dogs. Not to babies, horses or magpies. Just dogs. And their owners.

I didn’t even say I like or buy fireworks.

Are you commenting on behalf of dogs?

I love fireworks, so does the dog and the cat isn't bothered.

We've never had an animal who was particularly scared and I think they often pick up on the fears of their owners.

They don't go on for very long and I don't think someone should have to curtail their (very short-lived) behaviour on their own property just because someone else chooses to have an animal.

I love fireworks but my dog does not. She ran upstairs and got under my bed. I was lying on the sofa. No negative vibes from me

Screenager · 01/11/2025 21:08

I love fireworks! Bonfire night is defo my fave time of year… I love that it’s an actual british tradition with a decent history to go with it.

I do however think they should ban selling to the public… because most of the public are idiots.

PurpleCyclamen · 31/10/2025 20:05

I really love them. The agree they are very loud nowadays.
Maybe there should be legislation to reduce the decibels of the bangs.

I agree with this.

I love fireworks.
I don't, however, understand the need for the huge booms that seem to have been added to some fireworks in recent years.

Dolallytats · 01/11/2025 21:49

It's not just a few nights here in East London. I don't actually remember the last time there was no fireworks...they just get worse at this time of year.
It wouldn't be as bad if they were normal ones designed for garden displays, but these sound like bombs going off.

Or people with dementia apparently…..

The problem with banning them is it’ll go underground.
At least cost of living crisis appears to be over eh? 😬

@shellyleppardWe have a cat too, happily curled up on my bed, he's not that bothered and he's very timid!

Mine is terrified.

OhDear111 · 01/11/2025 22:08

I think fireworks should be at displays only. Far safer for a start. Then the dates allowed would be the Saturday before 5 Nov, 5 Nov the actual day, and the Saturday afterwards. It’s not acceptable to have fireworks in the streets on random days.

We have a village app group so everyone could be informed of fireworks parties. Even then we had fireworks last night and no one was told about them.

Our dog was terrified! My friends horses go mad. It’s definitely unfair to these loved and cared for animals. It’s selfish to have random fireworks so I think displays on dedicated days would work.

Ohplesandbanonos · 01/11/2025 22:25

I do think they should be only available for public displays rather than private purchase, however it is bonfire night weekend - very typical for displays to happen on the Saturday before or after 5 Nov and with next weekend being remembrance weekend it makes sense that it would be tonight. I've had 2 dogs that not only didn't care, we took them to firework displays and they enjoyed them! I had a cat that used to sit out and watch the fireworks.

That doesn't stop me being desperately sad for animals and people that are scared. restricting them to public displays seems a reasonable compromise.

Mushroo · 31/10/2025 20:26

I hate them. Trying to get the kids to bed and they’re SO LOUD!

My toddler is crying saying ‘it’s scary’ (she’s one) and it’s just so selfish of others.

Your one year old said 'It's scary'? Riiiiggghhht.......

Frequency · 01/11/2025 22:33

One of my dogs used to love fireworks until last night, when one exploded against our window after being let off too close to our house. I'm not sure what I could have done to prevent that? Or how that was a behavior contained to my neighbour's property?

I was also hurt while trying to escape the massive fucking explosion outside my window.

The general public does not have the collective common sense or intelligence to be trusted with explosive devices. They should be banned except for organised displays.

Nandina · 31/10/2025 20:47

@jetlag92 I think they often pick up on the fears of their owners.

I think that's the most stupid thing I've ever read on Mumsnet.

Absolutely totally agree, what a moronic statement! Ddog has been traumatised all week cos of the sodding fireworks. I'm not remotely phased, obvs....so that blows your ridiculous theory as sky high as the fireworks!

Hortesne · 01/11/2025 22:36

Oh well. Your neighbours have to deal with your dog barking all year round. Swings and roundabouts innit.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 01/11/2025 22:42

I love fireworks and bonfire night. When you live near other people you have to accept they will infringe on your peace and quiet. I hear dogs barking, kids screaming in their paddling pool, neighbours loud boozy chats in the garden. If you want to not ever hear others in your own home you need to buy a house in the middle of nowhere.

Frequency · 01/11/2025 22:45

There is a big difference between a bit of noise and literal explosives being in the hands of people not trained to use them.

The strain on emergency services during fireworks season is massive. It is a massive waste of taxpayers' money, along with being anti-social, irresponsible, and cruel to wildlife.

She is? She’s nearly two and has good speech?

She also thinks ‘big dogs’ are scary and asks for ‘little dogs’ 🤷‍♀️

What’s wrong with that? Chn do start talking at that age.

Onleemoi · 02/11/2025 08:40

What’s entertaining about fireworks? Standing around in the cold staring at some lights in the sky - I can’t see what’s fun about it.

WonderingWanda · 02/11/2025 08:44

I don't own a dog and my cat couldn't care less. However, my dd used to be terrified of them and other loud noises like hand driers. I don't think this was a learnt fear she just hated the sudden loud noise. Just like my dd animals can be afraid too but unlike my dd it isn't easy to explain the bangs or put ear defenders on.

It would be great if there could be a conpromise whereby it would be legal to let them off only on Nov the 5th and NYE for the general public but no other time. Other non general public formal displays at other times of the year could go ahead but need a license and a minimum period of notification for the community with posted leaflets. In an ideal world that could work so that people could prepare their pets. The problem is so many people are dicks these days who pride themselves on their ability to ignore the law and anyone else's wellbeing. So probably just best to ban the public from buying them.

jetlag92 · 02/11/2025 10:31

JudgeBread · 31/10/2025 19:35

Having worked with the general public and witnessed first hand the average level of intelligence in this country, it is absolutely wild to me that we just give people free access to literal explosives. Knives over three inches are naughty bad but by all means here's some stuff you can blow yourself up with!

And @jetlag92 just because your pets aren't scared doesn't negate all the ones (and people!) who are, what a stupid comment. We've had many dogs and none of them were scared of fireworks, until we got one who is. We've done nothing different with her so I'd love to know who she's "picking up fear" from when none of our other pets are bothered!

So because you own a pet who is scared, no-one else can do something for 10 minutes which they enjoy? I think that's very entitled.

JudgeBread · 02/11/2025 10:46

jetlag92 · 02/11/2025 10:31

Right back at you. Because you have pets that aren't scared you should be able to do something dangerous and legitimately terrifying for animals, veterans and vulnerable people? Because it doesn't effect you, you should be allowed to play with explosives and hang anyone it does impact? "I enjoy it so fuck anyone I'm upsetting or scaring"?

That sounds way more fucking entitled to me sweetheart.

There are also quite a few ex-army people in the population who find the noise from fireworks upsetting. It’s very selfish inflicting noise randomly on people and animals just for you and your friends.

I don't have dogs, I've answered your question but you're avoiding mine, you clearly couldn't care less
