Bloody Fireworks!!!

Sonolanona · 31/10/2025 18:47

I wish they were banned except for official displays.

Every night this week someone down my street has let them off.Tonight my neighbour is letting off huge ones and it sounds like we are under attack. They didn't have the consideration to warn anyone.

The dog is a quivering mess, and the cat is awol, and my elderly neighbour with dementia is terrified. 😟

I just wish the general public couldn't buy them!

I don't have dogs, I've answered your question but you're avoiding mine, you clearly couldn't care less

Right. So you’re not objecting because of dogs. Just as I’m not. Because as I said very clearly that is the height of hypocrisy given the nuisance dogs cause every day of the year.

I am in favour of a ban on fireworks in private hands because of the dangers to people they cause from misuse. I don’t object to fireworks on any other basis. Which includes organised displays which would still have the results you’re objecting to.

Frequency · 02/11/2025 13:39

Organised displays would still cause issues for wildlife, but the issues to pets and livestock could be mitigated if people had notice, ditto the issues faced by vulnerable people.

Silent fireworks do exist, though. I don't see the need for the bang; it's not pretty, and all it does is cause unnecessary terror.

What’s entertaining about fireworks? Standing around in the cold staring at some lights in the sky - I can’t see what’s fun about it.

But we are all different, aren't we?

I can't see the appeal of going to the opera, or to a heavy metal gig, or doing a park run, or camping, or wild swimming, or a sauna, or learning to play the violin, or owning a dog or a horse.

I happen to enjoy looking at fireworks in the sky (amongst lots of other things).

dynamiccactus · 02/11/2025 17:28

My gripe is that they are so loud. We had a public display near us last night and the whole house was shaking and we don't even live that close to the park - the houses by the park must have cracks all over their walls.

Why can't they just be lights and mini-bangs?

And Diwali is meant to be a festival of lights not bangs!

As for personal use, it should be completely banned.

dynamiccactus · 02/11/2025 17:30

Hortesne · 01/11/2025 22:36

Oh well. Your neighbours have to deal with your dog barking all year round. Swings and roundabouts innit.

I am not a dog person but dogs barking doesn't create cracks in the walls!

CarpetKnees · 02/11/2025 17:30

I agree that it is the decibel level that is the issue.

Which is a pretty achievable compromise as 'silent fireworks' are already a thing. Some quieter bangs, puffs, and fizzes as we used to have from fireworks would probably be fine for most people.

Well, nor do fireworks.

Ah, MN fireworks threads. The nights close in and the threads burst out.

Anyway, my new annual habit will be, starting now, to post about how laughable it is that dog owners complain about public nuisance caused by others.

Fireworks are a few days each year. Dogs shit on the streets, and everywhere else public, every single day. Dogs bark all year round. People’s lives are made a misery by dogs all the time.

Get to fuck with complaints about fireworks upsetting your hounds.

That's a miserable remark. Plenty of humans don't like fireworks. You get tae fuck with your shitty attitude.

Are you objecting on behalf of dogs and their owners or on behalf of people generally?

If you care about other people for themselves alone, fine. If you care about dog owners’ whinges, then bollocks.

I couldn’t give a shit about dogs shivering when fireworks go off. I have to put up with the dog crap and barking every single fucking day.

I'm objecting on a general basis and specifically at your snide outlook. You're an adult look where you're fucking walking.

Yeah, sure you are.

I look where I’m fucking walking and still tread in dog crap. It’s everywhere.

And I can’t look anywhere to avoid the mutts behind my house barking. Every. Fucking. Day.

sploshsplash · 02/11/2025 18:15

I think it’s ridiculous that Joe Public can pop into a supermarket and buy explosives 🤷‍♀️

Pollqueen · 02/11/2025 18:23

Why are people surprised and unprepared? We have fireworks every year at this time of year. It's hardly a surprise. Get over it 😕

And the people whose properties are damaged or destroyed? How do they prepare?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/11/2025 18:26

Fireworks have caused 49 horse deaths and 317 injuries since 2010, apparently.

I adore watching fireworks, but I can still understand completely why people object to the massive explosions that some people are letting off. We had a dog who was terrified of fireworks - nothing we did would calm her - she would shake in fear the whole time they were going off. We used to close the curtains and put the tv on louder, but that didn’t help much - she still knew they were happening.

I don’t think fireworks should be available for sale to the general public - there are too many injuries and fires caused by them, and too much distress caused to vulnerable people and animals.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 02/11/2025 18:27

I get you. It's so annoying. I've heard a few this evening. I was just finishing off cutting my husband's hair and already I could hear a few pops and fizzles. The big 'flash bang' ones haven't been set off yet, and now I've mentioned them, they most certainly will be near midnight when I'm trying to get a kip.

I don't think stopping people buying them is a good idea and I can't stand government interference of any sort, however, this is one of those things I'd not mind there being a permit for. If you set them off indiscriminately as part of a personal 'home display' and you think it'll be alright because the neighbours will be understanding or enjoying it, that's a fine, and that fine will increase with every additional infraction.

If you want to pay for fireworks, you can pay to go and see them at an organised display. Don't terrorise your neighbours. Especially veterans who may still have shell shock after all these years.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/11/2025 18:27

And I cannot understand being proud of not caring about the distress of animals or humans.

utamea · 02/11/2025 18:31

Agree OP. My dog is quivering for the third night in a row.

TeenLifeMum · 02/11/2025 18:34

Those with dogs - what proactive steps have you taken to train your dog?

I hear the rants every year yet I don’t walk around in November seeing dead wildlife everywhere. Nor do we see an upturn of freaked out dementia patients in our hospitals locally (where I work and know the dementia nurses well - I asked and the response was they often have very fond memories of childhood fireworks nights). Do I think people should be more considerate? Yes. Does more wildlife die due to cars? Yes. Should we ban cars? No.

If the majority of people agreed, they wouldn’t be selling out at local displays.

I have never heard of anyone's property being destroyed by fireworks

Living in a military community, there are plenty of fireworks being let off in the naval houses. Don’t use made up “facts” to suit your agenda. My grandfathers and great uncles (all dead now) used to love hosting fireworks nights. All fought in ww2.

NotAnotherPylon · 02/11/2025 20:18

It’s a common theme on here for dog owners to advise people who are frightened of dogs to get help with their anxiety. Even people who have been hurt and bitten in the past, or whose children have been hurt or bitten. They’re told that dogs are part of life and that people who are nervous around them need to learn to accept them. Being frightened of the unknown and unpredictable nature of dogs is seen as an overreaction worthy of intervention by a therapist. Yet people are supposed to curtail their once a year enjoyment to ensure that Tiddles doesn’t feel what is a very natural instinct in animals, including humans - fear. I imagine it must be very upsetting to see your beloved pet cowering in the corner. Just as it is upsetting for a parent to watch their child cowering from some random off lead dog.
