Bloody Fireworks!!!

Sonolanona · 31/10/2025 18:47

I wish they were banned except for official displays.

Every night this week someone down my street has let them off.Tonight my neighbour is letting off huge ones and it sounds like we are under attack. They didn't have the consideration to warn anyone.

The dog is a quivering mess, and the cat is awol, and my elderly neighbour with dementia is terrified. 😟

I just wish the general public couldn't buy them!

I love fireworks, so does the dog and the cat isn't bothered.

We've never had an animal who was particularly scared and I think they often pick up on the fears of their owners.

They don't go on for very long and I don't think someone should have to curtail their (very short-lived) behaviour on their own property just because someone else chooses to have an animal.

JamesClyman · 31/10/2025 19:32

And the Blue Meanies are out, as always, at this time of year.

JudgeBread · 31/10/2025 19:35

Having worked with the general public and witnessed first hand the average level of intelligence in this country, it is absolutely wild to me that we just give people free access to literal explosives. Knives over three inches are naughty bad but by all means here's some stuff you can blow yourself up with!

And @jetlag92 just because your pets aren't scared doesn't negate all the ones (and people!) who are, what a stupid comment. We've had many dogs and none of them were scared of fireworks, until we got one who is. We've done nothing different with her so I'd love to know who she's "picking up fear" from when none of our other pets are bothered!

CosySeason · 31/10/2025 19:36

They are to be expected at this time of year.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/10/2025 19:46

If they had fireworks every day, then cats, dogs and wildlife would become acclimatised to them - like they did during the Great War and everybody would be happy, especially Brocks, Pains and Standard. Just a suggestion.

HollywentLightly · 31/10/2025 20:02

Our dog was immune to fireworks until some little scotes shot a bottle rocket straight across the road one evening in the middle of October 2 years ago when dh was walking him. He's at home this evening tranquillised and still terrified. We've had fireworks and rockets going off for 2 weeks now and they'll be going for another few days. Then again for a week or so around New year. I love fireworks. I wish we could have them without a horrible effect on uncomprehending animals and fearful people.

PurpleCyclamen · 31/10/2025 20:05

I really love them. The agree they are very loud nowadays.
Maybe there should be legislation to reduce the decibels of the bangs.

The noise isn’t exactly confined to your own property though is it?

They need banning apart from public displays.

cobrakaieaglefang · 31/10/2025 20:23

I took ddog out when I got home from work, so around 5.30. Got up the road, a sodding firework went off, she froze, then bolted for home. At 47kg of sledging dog we got home a lot quicker then we went out!

shellyleppard · 31/10/2025 20:26

@cobrakaieaglefang hope your dog is okay x and you x

Mushroo · 31/10/2025 20:26

I hate them. Trying to get the kids to bed and they’re SO LOUD!

My toddler is crying saying ‘it’s scary’ (she’s one) and it’s just so selfish of others.

shellyleppard · 31/10/2025 20:27

@PurpleCyclamen agree completely. The big air bombs are really really loud. Our cat is hiding under the bed right now.

thankgoditssaturday · 31/10/2025 20:45

It used to be fireworks were reserved for bonfire night. Now they are October to bloody December. Consequently I no longer enjoy them. I think adults that insist of having fireworks any time apart from bonfire night are immature and need to grow up.

Nandina · 31/10/2025 20:47

@jetlag92 I think they often pick up on the fears of their owners.

I think that's the most stupid thing I've ever read on Mumsnet.

cobrakaieaglefang · 31/10/2025 20:57

@shellyleppard Yes we are fine thank you. Once the fireworks went off, I knew she'd want to get home. And once home, she sat watching tv, she does it to distract herself, odd I know! She doesn't shake or show extreme distress but tries her own self settle technique..tv!

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 31/10/2025 21:05

Ah, MN fireworks threads. The nights close in and the threads burst out.

Anyway, my new annual habit will be, starting now, to post about how laughable it is that dog owners complain about public nuisance caused by others.

Fireworks are a few days each year. Dogs shit on the streets, and everywhere else public, every single day. Dogs bark all year round. People’s lives are made a misery by dogs all the time.

Get to fuck with complaints about fireworks upsetting your hounds.

shellyleppard · 31/10/2025 21:19

@cobrakaieaglefang bless her if it helps though...
I have 3 cats. One is fast asleep. One keeps looking up if they are really close and the other is hiding under the bed. Be glad when the fireworks are over tbh x

roshi42 · 31/10/2025 21:28

It is firework night weekend… I’m not saying I love them either, but I think this is the one weekend of the year you do expect them and people don’t need to issue warnings!

cobrakaieaglefang · 31/10/2025 21:28

@shellyleppardWe have a cat too, happily curled up on my bed, he's not that bothered and he's very timid!

Does it bother you that horses are terrified, farm animals are terrified, wildlife like birds suffer, babies are scared, and most people don't want to listen to bombs going off for nights on end

Netcurtainnelly · 01/11/2025 19:10

They are far to loud today. No wonder pets are scared. Sounds like a warning out there.

purple590 · 01/11/2025 19:18

We just have a few low noise one and i wouldn't tell our neighbours because everyone will be expecting it this weekend, we've heard three different lots going off already.

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 01/11/2025 19:23

I'm with you, OP. Some scrotes arpund my area have started setting them off during the day which is a new low. Nothing like a series of giant booms at 7 in the morning to set you up for the day! Seriously, wtf

MissyB1 · 01/11/2025 19:24

Someone in our street has been letting them off for the last hour 🙄
I gave the dog a sedative at 5pm with her dinner but it hasn’t helped all that much. She’s sleepy but still stressed and trying to pace but her legs are wobbly because of the sedative. She’s panting loudly. It’s just awful.

Middlemarch123 · 01/11/2025 19:24

I had a tortie who loved them, would sit on the conservatory window ledge watching them. A bruiser of a ginger tom who hid under the bed, quacking in fear. My current three - Chairman Meow is indifferent, full of Dreamies and snoozing on his bed. My two girls hate them and thankfully are safe indoors. They’re just munching their Dreamies and snuggling up with me.
