Happy Four Seasons Total Landscaping Day to everyone who celebrates.

It's a little known rule that the Nobel prize cannot be awarded to convicted criminals (I made that up, but it sounds likely).

This is shocking

Two panels commemorating the contribution of Black American soldiers towards the liberation of the Netherlands in World War Two have been quietly removed from a cemetery in Limburg. It follows a complaint by right-wing think tank The Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission.

What is wrong with these people? Lily-livered cowards every single one of them.

More (harrowing) details about the panels and the cemetery and the black servicemen who dug the graves.

"So, there we were. A group of Black Americans confronted with all these dead white Americans… When they were alive, we couldn’t sit in the same room."

For those of you with Apple TV I highly recommend 'Masters of the Air'. It deals with the first US Army Air Force (as it was called then) pilots to be stationed in the UK during WWII. It also brings in the Tuskegee Airmen, a squad of black pilots who were segregated from the white squadrons and allowed only 'support missions' until they became necessary to victory but who still stepped up with courage and honor to fight for a country that denied them equal rights.

After that Google "Bamber Bridge"

Talkinpeace · 09/11/2025 16:26

@SerendipityJane
Have just merrily fallen down the Battle of Bamber Bridge rabbit hole.

It is so important to remember that US and UK race politics start from incredibly different places.

Unfortunately Unions in the USA were given bad publicity despite the majority working for the common good. It's media manipulation. Horrible and pervasive.

Yes, I think that's a huge part of where we are now. Talk radio/Reagan policies in the 80s convincing traditional union members that they were unnecessary left large parts of the country largely decimated and has contributed enormously to where we find ourselves now.

My concern now is how the DNC take Mandami’s win. If they conclude from it that they need to lurch to the Left to win in 2026 they may make a fatal error. It’ll be the “coastal elites” all over again.

Well considering the DNC wouldn't support him and leadership like Chuck Schumer won't even say they voted for him, I suspect there's very little chance of that. If you take a look at the funding disclosures of most of the dem leadership, I don't think there's much reason to be concerned they're going all progressive on us.

I mean look at Maine - a state that could be critical with a senator who should be ripe for unseating. Even before Platner's issues, the party wasn't going to touch him, opting instead to throw their support behind a 77 year old woman who's been a good, but not hugely popular, governor.

But I'm a great believe in state primaries. Let the people choose.

I did think I'd like something like primaries here (wasn't something trialled in Cornwall a while back ?)

However I also though the Fixed Term Parliament Act was a good idea, and could not have been more wrong.
