I don’t think there is a restriction on the number of parties allowed to contest US elections - weren’t the Greens, under Ralph Nader, a possible contender at one point? Or did I just make that up?

Ralph Nader probably didn't cost Al Gore the election, but he was definitely a factor. I'm not sure there's ever been a third party candidate in the US that didn't benefit the Republicans.
