The only issue right now about China and magnets is that China has a world dominating position in possessing and processing the rare earth minerals essential for producing the powerful magnets used in electronic and military applications, and is willing to use that advantage.

Trump and his blackmailing beautiful tariffs is what caused China to push back with export restrictions. But as other countries develop their own rare earth minerals, China's dominance will fall.

I cannot fault their use of a currently effective trade weapon to counter Trump's attempts to damage their economy. Or to put it in Trump's words - China has all the cards.

I just wish other countries had the ability to fight back too. Consumers around the world are paying for Trump's bloody tariffs.

As I said, grain of truth wrapped up in gibberish. One of the things DH is currently working on is an EU project to counter China's stranglehold on ... something or other but by this time I'd tuned out and it all became 'blah blah blah'.

I just hope that the BBC, which unlike CBS is taxpayer funded,

If they pay a single cent to the Orange cunt they can kiss goodbye to the remaining licence fee payers. (And it's ironic that UK Trump supporters are much less likely to pay the licence fee anyway).

It will certainly be interesting to see what treatment this gets on HIGNFY

Remember they aren't rare.

China tried this once before - in the late noughties. Limiting exports to force the price up. However because they are new to capitalism, they failed to realise that this would make previously unviable non-Chinese sources of rare-earth minerals, viable. Which is exactly what happened. (A similar thing happened with tin, which led to Cornish tin mining being a thing again).

However the Chinese (unlike the west) learns form it's mistakes. They are not going to be blindsided again.

logicisall · 11/11/2025 10:36

Remember they aren't rare.

Exactly, and why the EU is developing lynchpin projects in Africa to develop a secure supply chain. China however, has 40% of the world's supply and don't care much about envirolmental pollution during mining operations.

I'm interested in this topic and wonder how it will all play out.

As soon as any nation gets close to viable extraction, the Chinese will flood the market, depress the price, and they will become unviable again.

This is how you box with capitalism and turn it's greed against itself. No one is going to invest billions in a project that will take 10, 15 years to complete.

logicisall · 11/11/2025 11:28

I'm not so sure @SerendipityJane. This could be the point when we start adopting the 30 year planning like the Chinese. A major hurdle will be gov't changes but doing it in partnership with other countries will help spread the cost. Trump has already fettered Ukraine, but there's Vietnam, India and Australia etc to partner with.

Or China could end up like De Beers after a viable alternative was developed.

SerendipityJane · 11/11/2025 11:36

That needs broad consensus politics. And you will notice what has been in short supply recently (no, I don't think it's a coincidence).

Quite aside from short political cycles, you have the greed of the market.

I am expecting Starmer to bodge this opportunity to galvanise the country into a single middle digit to Trump and his lickspittle traitor Tories.

I sometimes swear in Finnish. It has the advantage that you can let off steam and very few people know what you are saying.

I don't know if anyone else has seen Joyce Carol Oates takedowns of Musk in recent days? They've been brilliant

This is what's being recommended on this thread for 'you may be interested'. Made me guffaw at recommending 'dementia/alzheimers threads' and then wrinkle my brow and say to myself "Seriously, it's not really funny that those threads are recommended based on thread about a POTUS".

My time 'away' from politics and avoiding anything SCROTUS in the media and then suddenly watching and reading about his antics really shows his insanity for what it is. Megalomania and dementia are a very, very dangerous combination. We have had a POTUS with dementia before (Reagan) but he wasn't a megalomaniac and at least the reins of Govt were in 'other hands', hands that weren't bent on dismantling our democracy.

@DuncinToffee

I was expecting this. And I'm sure other nations will follow, especially any information-sharing nations (or their close allies) in the 'danger zones' in the Pacific and the Caribbean. At this point SCROTUS is like a child with a shiny new toy weapon. A child will run around pointing it at random people and objects shouting "Pew pew! Rat-a-tat-tat! Bang, you're dead!" and getting a real thrill over it. Problem is, the weapons are real and it's not imaginary ammo they're firing.

And apparently there has been absolutely no pushback of any kind. No wonder he thinks he can get away with (literal) murder!

NEWS: The UK is no longer sharing intelligence with the US about suspected drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean because it does not want to be complicit in US military strikes and believes the attacks are illegal, sources familiar with the matter told CNN. https://edition.cnn.com/2025/11/11/politics/uk-suspends-caribbean-intelligence-sharing-us

Fuck me. Is that a backbone I hear growing ?

SerendipityJane · 11/11/2025 17:13

Pleased we (the UK) held firm about the security detail having to give up their weapons (I bet they didn't).

I don't want UK policeman having guns. Let alone dodgy foreigners who can do a flit with their governments help and then claim some sort of immunity.

I saw a report that in the COP conference they are asking the whole developed world to allocate
$1.3 tn
to ameliorate climate change in poor countries

Compare to Musks $1.0 tn personal pay packet
