Is Reeves the next one to go?

Her not getting whatever licence she needed doesn’t sound particularly corrupt but somewhat incompetent.

Apparently Starmer is reviewing ‘new information’. If there’s even a whiff of sleeze or being economical with the truth she’s got to go too.

For someone who banged on about sleeze and standards, Starmer isn’t doing well with his ministers.

Probably. She'll be OK though. They always are. 🙄

JackJarvisEsq · 30/10/2025 17:57

Nah, it’ll be someone else’s fault 🙄

Boomer55 · 30/10/2025 17:59

Hopefully, she will go. But she won’t be fired yet.

its suddenly come out that she and her husband exchanged emails about the lack of a license.

She’s admitted she did know she needed one.

Hopefully .

Pedallleur · 30/10/2025 18:04

It gets wearying tho. Politicians of all parties with their second homes/primary residence (this week), second, third jobs and somehow they forget about X or Y and yet as Cabinet Ministers they (or their Private Secretary)can make a phone call direct to HMRC or whichever Dept they need to speak to. They won't be pressing 3 and on hold. But no, it's a surprise to them that they've done something wrong/made an error.

Oh in which case she’s as dishonest as she is incompetent.

If she gets away with this anyone that was fined needs their money back. ASAP, nobody should pay and just say “I didn’t know”

I think she should go this is yet another one rule for them example.

Dbank · 30/10/2025 18:11

She said the didn't know she needed a license, but the email trail from the agency shows she or her husband knew she needed one.

She's lied, she's toast.

Sadcafe · 30/10/2025 18:15

From the information put out, it does seem that although she knew it was needed, the letting agent offered to get it then didn’t, so, although she should probably have chased it up sooner, it does actually sound on this occasion as if she is not to blame

3peassuit · 30/10/2025 18:17

She can't go yet, she's got to deliver the budget in a few days time. I'll give her till early in the new year.

Radiatorvalves · 30/10/2025 18:19

The agent has apologised. Sounds like they dropped the ball having promised to action.

i do think that RR is coming in for a huge amount of flack for a technicality that the agent had promised to sort. Like her or loathe her, she’s a very busy person and starting a new job, moving house etc, you will need help and delegate. I have a lot of sympathy for her. NB I’m not a Labour voter.

olderandnonthewiser · 30/10/2025 18:29

@RadiatorvalvesI would agree if she hasn’t lied about any of it. There is no excuse for lying.

WhitegreeNcandle · 30/10/2025 18:31

As much as I’m not a fan of her policies I do think this is why we struggle in the country. It seems she’s made a genuine mistake, she’s not harmed anyone, she has apologised - people are human. They make mistakes.

HelplessSoul · 30/10/2025 18:33

Reeves should have been sacked when she lied on her CV.

She is a serial fucking liar and an incompetent oxygen thief. Honest mistake my ass.

She is an MP who is a lying scumbag - the same as all other MPs.

Nestingbirds · 30/10/2025 18:33

I think it sounds ominous - having backed her publicly Starmer seems to be rowing back quickly, I don’t think he would do that if he thought it would be fine.

ninjahamster · 30/10/2025 18:34

No I dont think so. The agency have accepted responsibility.

Dbank · 30/10/2025 18:35

My partner and I commented that RR looked on the verge of crying in PMQs on Wednesday,

SK doesn't really have an option now, it's clear that she lied about knowing she needed the license.

It's irrelevant that the agent failed to do it, just as if it had been some bloke down the pub said he would do it, it was her responsibility, she knew it was required and she didn't get one.

If this is how well she runs her affairs I wouldn't trust her to run a bath, let alone the economy.

KnickerlessParsons · 30/10/2025 18:35

She may have delegated the getting of the licence to someone else, but it was still her responsibility to get a licence.
If she can’t get the little things right, how can she be trusted to manage the country’s money?

Ihateboris · 30/10/2025 18:36

She needs to be treated like anyone else would be for breaking the law...but she won't; coz, you know, one set of rules for them and another for us plebs.

Nestingbirds · 30/10/2025 18:37

The onus was on the property owners to ensure a license was purchased, even if someone at an agency ‘forgot’

lifeonmars100 · 30/10/2025 18:42

Those licenses are just money spinners for local authorites they are not worth anything. Yes she should have got one but honestly they are not worth the paper they are written on. I live in a selective licensing area and they mean nothing, the council can inspect, they can in theory compel a landlord to bring a property up to spec but in actual fact they do nothing. I live next door to a BTL hell hole and despite complaining to Selective Licensing they do nothing even thought they have inspected and told me there are significant problems that need action. I can hardly imagine that Reeves' house is a wreck with light switches hanging off the wall, bare floor boards, no fence, overflowing gutters, a yard full of trash and an exterior wall that is crumbling. That is what I live next door to and then factor in anti social behavour and drug dealing all of which should compromise the landlord's licence and lead to court action. She has been remiss but it is hardly the crime of the century

unsync · 30/10/2025 18:46

Of course she should go. One rule for us, another for them. If I was Angela Rayner, I'd be experiencing schadenfreude about now.

It looks like the agent is going to fall on his sword, but ultimately she and her husband are to blame. They should be treated no differently to other residents who failed to get a licence.

She should also step down. She's a hypocrite and a liar. To be fair to her though, these do seem to be the qualities a cabinet member requires in Starmer's government.

mentalblank · 30/10/2025 18:54

Maybe it's just me, but it seems completely insane to me to sack a senior politician because the letting agent that managed their rental property was supposed to get a license, and they didn't, despite saying that they would. Even for those who really dislike Rachel Reeves, do you think that getting rid of a Chancellor in situations like this is a sensible way to run our economy?

I see your point - but would we get the same treatment if we had forgotten or overseen following up on a necessary prerequisite to rent out our own homes?
There is the matter of her CV as well. And that she’s gone back on what she originally told KS. It seems ridiculous the way these figures are brought down, and a real shame if you value their contribution & standing as many did with Angela Rayner for eg. But rooting out sleaze & restoring the public’s faulty in our MP’s has been front & centre of KS’s manifesto so anything that suggests impropriety or law breaking is called into question.
