Is Reeves the next one to go?

Her not getting whatever licence she needed doesn’t sound particularly corrupt but somewhat incompetent.

Apparently Starmer is reviewing ‘new information’. If there’s even a whiff of sleeze or being economical with the truth she’s got to go too.

For someone who banged on about sleeze and standards, Starmer isn’t doing well with his ministers.

Labour lost Caerphilly. The party who has completely destroyed Wales.

But left wing Plaid Cymru won. I probably would have voted for them in order to stop the sink cess pit hole that's the Reform party from winning as well.

Remember in order to be a member of Reform you must consent to total obedience. Good boy!

BlindSpotForCats · 30/10/2025 19:59

Well, I think Rachel R is thrilled that Andrew MW has taken the attention from her.

My life is utterly fabulous. I have a wonderful circle of amazing friends and I'm never exhausted because I'm full of energy and zest for life. I just have no time for incompetence, liars and underachievers.

And yet you sound so miserable when you post.

Yes, it's great that Plaid won. An utter humiliation for Labour and long awaited.

SisterTeatime · 30/10/2025 20:01

She lied. It’s unacceptable. I would have a little more human sympathy if this government weren’t so sanctimonious about everyone else’s behaviour.

I realise these licences aren’t the be all
and end all when it comes to renting out a house, but enough politicians have been brought down by housing-related blunders that you’d think they’d be extremely careful to dot every i and cross every t. And honestly i think anyone whose instinct, when the Daily Mail is onto them, is to lie, is either a habitual liar or a bloody idiot or both. If she’d said immediately that the agent had said they’d deal with it and she had that in writing, she might have got away with it.

She’s got to go.

Actually, it does me sad when reading the stories of those whose lives have been destroyed by Labour. People struggling to pay their mortgage, unable to heat their homes adequately, seeing their meagre disposable income grow ever smaller while worrying endlessly about possible tax increases.

PolarExpression · 30/10/2025 20:07

The biggest issue is that she sounds to have lied. Yesterday she said she didn't realise she needed a license, claiming an honest mistake.

Now emails have emerged forcing her to admit that she DID know.

If she is a proven liar, surely she can't be chancellor?

Clearinguptheclutter · 30/10/2025 20:12

I think the agent is to blame here BUT the denial that she knew she needed a licence when actually, she did, is BAD

I feel sorry for them being scrutinised for every single move and Angela Rayner in particular was the subject of years of witch hunting. But both should have known better.

The emails were between the agent and Reeves' husband, though. If he was the one dealing with the rental and she wan't involved, then she can claim she didn't know.

I don't think she'll go. I did think she would have to earlier, but the email puts a different spin on things.

From the information put out, it does seem that although she knew it was needed, the letting agent offered to get it then didn’t, so, although she should probably have chased it up sooner, it does actually sound on this occasion as if she is not to blame

I thought she initially said she didn’t know she needed one?

Reeves told Sir Keir that "regrettably" she was not aware a licence was needed to rent out her Southwark home after moving into Downing Street last year

This is very different to saying I thought the letting agent was sorting it out.

She needs to go, she’s clearly a bare faced liar.

I'm critical when criticism is needed and you obviously choose to ignore those posts. However, you crop up like a bad penny on every thread that's about immigration.

How do you feel after Reform lost Caerphilly?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd9klevy28qo
The result saw a swing of 27% from Labour, which has held the seat in Westminster since the 1920s and in the Senedd since it began at the turn of the century

I guess this is what is considered a Starmer success these days.

Meh, Raynor did her fair share of witch hunting herself. Karma.

Yes exactly

some politicians are busy accumulating wealth and then not playing by the rules they impose on others

So what, she didn’t deal with the agent personally, yet confidently told KS she didn’t think she needed one?

Did she not think to discuss with her husband first?
As she, personally, didn’t have anything to do with it?
And find out, from the person who did, before speaking to KS?

The clear line here is that she doesn’t seem to think at all

She’s either a liar, incompetent, or both.

(my money is on both)

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/10/2025 20:23

"...the prime minister has "full confidence" in her."

That usually precedes a minster saying "I'll get my coat..."

Bumblebee72 · 30/10/2025 20:24

We are going to have another one of those full confidence speeches at PMQs this week. So we all know what will happen on Thursday.

snoffle · 30/10/2025 20:34

I don't get how yesterday, given how vulnerable her position might have become, she and her husband didn't comb through every single email between them and the lettings agency to be absolutely certain of who advised what. The public letter to KS is not something I could imagine putting my name to unless I was convinced every word was accurate, especially when my role requires being on top of details.

My view is that she probably didn't intend to deceive, but has been careless. Twice, with the second time the worse of the two.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems completely insane to me to sack a senior politician because the letting agent that managed their rental property was supposed to get a license, and they didn't, despite saying that they would. Even for those who really dislike Rachel Reeves, do you think that getting rid of a Chancellor in situations like this is a sensible way to run our economy?

Getting rid of this chancellor, under any circumstances, is a very good way to run the economy

Minty25 · 30/10/2025 20:48

She'll likely be gone after the budget anyway.

I agree but if she lied, that is a different issue.

If she said "I should have got one and didn't" that is one thing.

But saying "I didn't know I needed one" when she did know is another.

That said, the media have too much time on their hands to hound the female members of the government.

What's been destroyed by Labour? We had Brexit and 14 years of the Tories to destroy peoples' lives.

Notmymarmosets · 30/10/2025 21:11

If I was a landlord who forgot to get a licence, or didn't know I had to have one, or even if I deliberately didn't get one, I wouldn't lose my job. Heck I wouldn't even tell my employers. I'd just fix it and get on with my life.
We have few enough quality people in politics (and tbf I don't think RR is amongst them), that we can afford to make the job even more untenable awful. Who is even half capable of replacing her? And of those who are, who would want to be subjected to this scrutiny?

I bet if this were Boris you would think different. He was literally with Covid hospitalised and people wouldn’t stop.

TwistyTurnip · 30/10/2025 21:48

My prediction is that Starmer will wait until after Reeves delivers the budget - which will include a 2p increase in income tax, and then give her the marching orders. That way, they get the tax increases they promised wouldn’t happen during the election campaign, and Starmer gets to look like a hero for ditching her.
