Is Reeves the next one to go?

Her not getting whatever licence she needed doesn’t sound particularly corrupt but somewhat incompetent.

Apparently Starmer is reviewing ‘new information’. If there’s even a whiff of sleeze or being economical with the truth she’s got to go too.

For someone who banged on about sleeze and standards, Starmer isn’t doing well with his ministers.

What's been destroyed by Labour? We had Brexit and 14 years of the Tories to destroy peoples' lives.

Boring and so overdone.

The reason for all those years of austerity is because they had to sort out the mess the previous Labour government left behind. Things were a lot better before this government came along.

I don't get how yesterday, given how vulnerable her position might have become, she and her husband didn't comb through every single email between them and the lettings agency to be absolutely certain of who advised what. The public letter to KS is not something I could imagine putting my name to unless I was convinced every word was accurate, especially when my role requires being on top of details.

My view is that she probably didn't intend to deceive, but has been careless. Twice, with the second time the worse of the two.

My prediction is that Starmer will wait until after Reeves delivers the budget - which will include a 2p increase in income tax, and then give her the marching orders. That way, they get the tax increases they promised wouldn’t happen during the election campaign, and Starmer gets to look like a hero for ditching her.

I think this is how it will go too. Starmer is a narcissist with no ethical standards and has no loyalty to his colleagues, and is happy to throw anyone under the bus when convenient to him.

mo25 · 30/10/2025 22:06

I dislike her immensely and am quite pleased she is getting her comeuppance, but, I do feel like the country is so bound up in red tape and stealth tax (which frankly a £900 fee to apply for a licence is nothing more than a tax) that it is pretty easy to come unstuck. Looks like she tried to cover it up though so she will be toast. Very odd that the agency is falling on its sword for her - terrible publicity for them.

Noiamnotalison · 30/10/2025 23:49

Not a fan of Rachel Reeves at all and thinks she’s a crap Chancellor (although she has been handed a poisoned chalice which needs an extremely talented economist to manage).

However, I think this is a touch overblown and wouldn’t have received traction of it weren't for Angela Rayner who was clearly gaining significant advantage.

I’m so tired of all the distracting ‘moral’ crusades on all sides which are just intent on gaining political advantage. It’s just distraction after distraction and barely any actual governing is being done.

Y0208680333367 · 30/10/2025 23:56

She a useful idiot. Starmer will sack her after the budget. He’ll have no problem using her a shield and scape goat for his Labour shite.

Well if they hadn’t rolled in claiming to be the saintly corruption-free sleaze free party, they might’ve had a leg to stand on. Sadly…all we’ve got is a bunch of incompetents whinging, and being as embarrassingly self-righteous as vegetarian teenagers.

Oh god! That’s it, isn’t it? She’ll deliver an utterly dreadful budget, THEN get the sack and then Starmer will blame her ( whilst conveniently forgetting he’s actually the man in the big chair and all her policies are actually his?)

Reeves should have been sacked when she lied on her CV.

She is a serial fucking liar and an incompetent oxygen thief. Honest mistake my ass.

She is an MP who is a lying scumbag - the same as all other MPs.

Edited

I agree she is a compulsive liar as well as incompetent. I wish she would go.

But left wing Plaid Cymru won. I probably would have voted for them in order to stop the sink cess pit hole that's the Reform party from winning as well.

Remember in order to be a member of Reform you must consent to total obedience. Good boy!

Try not to give too much attention to reform. A mistake Labour continue to make. Reform will be an irrelevance in a year or two when everyone realises what a bunch of losers they are. Hopefully the tories will come through for us all. Because the last thing we need is the Green Party. Obviously Labour are disappearing into the ether of incompetent bitter batshittery they’ve created.

If she'd spent time assiduously pursuing the incompetent letting agent, the Daily Wail would be complaining she was spending time on trivial personal matters instead of getting on with her job.

Yes Kier. Of course Kier. Soon you’ll be telling us Angela Raynor did nuffin wrong too.

I'm a LL and I know it's my job to get a license. Even if I used an agent, which I don't I'd still want a copy of the license, just as I keep copies of gas and electric certificates. That's because I know I'm responsible and ignorance is no excuse for not having complied with law. Other LL in her area got fined for not having the licence. There is a huge fine for non compliance. She should get taken to court and fined just the same as other LL's in her area were treated.

But she’s admitted she made an error. And really said soz from the bottom of her heart. Surely that’s enough. After all that’s how the law and taxes work for the rest of us isn’t it? All we’d need to do is say sorry to HMRC and they’d let us off. Stop being so fussy!

Depends whether you think failure to micromanage a letting agent is a sackable offence when you have a very big and time-consuming job to do.

We all know there’s more to it than that. The evidence is there. But such is human nature. We see what we want to see and ignore everything else. And then of course She Did Say Sorry.

LindorDoubleChoc · 31/10/2025 00:40

Of course she shouldn't have to resign over this very small thing. What on earth?

It's funny that the mistakes always save them money-

Angela Raynor should have paid the highter rate of stamp duty £40,000

RAchael Reeves should have got the £900 licence.

I agree that it doesn't seem a big enough story to make her go on balance.
The Morgan Mc Sweeney story of £70,000 undeclared donations was a much bigger story but went no-where.

She’s broken the law and lied to the PM. She didn’t have to. Wouldn’t you at least ask your husband/ask the letting agent/check your emails before telling the obvious lie that you didn’t know you needed the licence? Per the Mail, she was actually promoting the introduction/use of licences in her constituency.

Like Angela Rayner, she thinks she can blame the little people (they didn’t tell me what to do/do it for me) and stay on her high horse - ‘spirit of transparency’ my foot.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems completely insane to me to sack a senior politician because the letting agent that managed their rental property was supposed to get a license, and they didn't, despite saying that they would. Even for those who really dislike Rachel Reeves, do you think that getting rid of a Chancellor in situations like this is a sensible way to run our economy?

More sensible than letting her continue to run it.

hattie43 · 31/10/2025 07:20

It astounds me that these people think they can run a country when they can’t even get their own private affairs in order . I’m a landlord and I’ve never managed to not follow all the legal processes to include a license , despite living 120 miles away from the property.

Thingamebobwotsit · 31/10/2025 07:27

I have worked in central government with Ministers. No there is not a raft of people behind them picking up the slack. Yes it is perfectly possible her husband just didn't pick it up and she didn't clock it. In the main (Farage notwithstanding) work incredibly long hours in these big jobs.

She is a difficult Chancellor, with a difficult job, but we put up with a lot more lying and deceit from Male MPs and the lynch mobs aren't out. There was a piece in the US press last week about Farage and his views on abortion and he is openly flirting with the far right over there, Johnson routinely lied, Cameron had a history with pigs, Major had Curry, Blair - Iraq. The list is endless.

Judge her on her work, fine. But make sure the bar for complaint is equal to that for the men, because otherwise you are just playing into the underlying misogyny that prevails throughout Parliament, whatever party.

HPFA · 31/10/2025 07:29

The letting agents have now come out and said that Rachel Reeves would have been under the impression that the license had been applied for as an agent had told her this would be done but didn't do it.

So her "crime" is now that she didn't check that a job which she had been told would be done actually was done.

This is not a resigning matter for someone who presumably does have a busy life!

The confected outrage especially from Kemi "Hacker" Badenoch is clearly politically motivated and should now be ignored.

As for the idea that austerity was "necessary" plenty of experts at the time warned that long term it would cost more than it saved. And so it has proved.
