Things I don’t do…that apparently everyone else DOES do…

largepinkcontainer · 22/10/2025 23:09

Tonight I put some Nivea on my face but apart from taking my makeup off each day, I don’t have a skin care routine and I don’t use moisturiser that often.

Other things I don’t do…I don’t make the bed every day (might straighten it, but that’s it), I don’t keep takeaway boxes (does anyone?) and I don’t send Christmas cards (never miss a birthday though).

What things do you not do…that most other people seem to do? This is a ‘no judgement’ thread. 😆

Sounds super fun 👍

I do loads of stuff that is great fun, just not the things on the list.

I travel a lot, I play professional sport, all of which I find to be way more exhilarating than attending a friends 40th birthday party or a wedding that is a near exact replica of every other wedding I’ve been forced to endure.

Mistyglade · 23/10/2025 09:33

I don’t do a good few of previous posts. As for showering and looking after my skin if I didn’t I’d be covered in zits as my skin is unforgiving if it’s unclean. I take pride in my appearance because if I look good I feel good which is imperative to my mental health. I’ve got complex health issues so I take a lot of responsibility to keep as well as I can.

😀

Someone's got to keep me in business!

oldmanandtheangel · 23/10/2025 09:39

A teenager at work asked what food apps I have. She said I was weird when I said none. I have never, ever had any food delivered. The most I will ever do fast food wise is drive to the local chippy if I have nothing in.
I haven't sent Christmas card for about 30 years at least.. except to my parents

People seem to a very narrow idea of what is socially accepted 'fun' at times. My wee girl loves sport, is part of a sport club, have tried multiple sports and has a list of others she wants to try, so the more women getting joy from it the better as far as I'm concerned. Who is anyone to say watching films is more fun?

Yes…I meant the plastic takeaway boxes. As far as I know you can’t freeze stuff in them or put them in the microwave so I don’t see much use in keeping them.

And yes, I really should make the bed properly. I used to do it but then fell out of the habit.

Genuinely curious to know where it’s come from that you can’t freeze stuff in the plastic takeaway tubs or put them in the microwave? My freezer is full of batch cooked meals in these tubs, and I always put them in the microwave!

The people who don’t wear makeup - do you have a sex life with another person who is in the same room as you?

Wtf!

What is wrong with you? My very healthy sex life and my lack of makeup coexist quite happily, thanks. Good personal hygiene is essential, makeup is not.

If you think your partner only shags you because you've had a mani-pedi and wear lipstick, you need to improve your self worth.

ComfyPyjamaBottoms · 23/10/2025 09:53

I have never found wine pleasant, just dont bother.
I do not shave anywhere.
I don't anything about celebrities.
I don't use ChatGpt. What actually is it? What does it do?
I have never worn make up or had any kind of 'routine'.
I don't do xmas eve nonsense.
I don't use or understand Instagram, Tick Tock or Snapchat.
I never watch adverts.

I keep the plastic boxes from takeaways - I am tight and do not want to pay for tupperware.

Xmas cards, no. I donate to Salvation Army instead

Make a bed - only when estate agents are coming / guests

Face care regime - I use face wash when I remember, but dont use foundation so dont feel like I need to wipe much off.

Others : Social media / Strava etc - nope
Don't use deodrant (wash everyday and shave regularly , change clothes daily /twice a day in the summer if needed ) I am single though so i guess this could change

I tie my hair back without brushing it regularly (clip stray bits) Wash it weekly (fringe is more often as noticeable)

Reading this back, I sound like a slob. I am not , I merely do what suits me not necessarily what others expect . If challenged eg work about presenteeism I would act upon it !

I don't drive
I don't drink tea or coffee
I don't have a TV
I don't wear make-up anymore, except on special occasions
I don't have a profile on Snapchat, Tiktok, Twitter or Bluesky
I don't shower in the morning, only at night

Bluesky?

What is that ? (says while looking out the window )

RampantIvy · 23/10/2025 10:02

I do loads of things that many mumsnetters don't do. I get the feeling that a lot of people live very small and isolated lives in mumsnet world.

Mistyglade · 23/10/2025 10:06

I’m sure I read somewhere once it’s the preserve of the middle classes not to bother themselves with such frippery as cleaning their homes and presenting themselves smartly cleaned and pressed as it’s all somehow beneath them. This confirms the class of MN on this thread! My upbringing was working class and my fastidious mother would deem those with dusty homes and unmade beds as slovenly and filthy as she terrified us into not making the tiniest spot of mess. No ribena or anything that could stain in our council house.

I have never:

  • Driven a car nor motorbike
  • Smoked, nor taken any recreational drugs
  • Drunk beer or lager (also no whisky, whiskey, nor e.g. Baileys)
  • Eaten cheese beyond the age of about 9 months old
  • Drunk coffee, nor eaten any coffee flavoured things
  • Been on a package holiday - nor beach holiday
  • Been to a music festival
  • Been to a nightclub
  • Been to any sporting event
  • Watched any 'reality' programme, nor any soap series, nor any sport, nor anything 'celebrity' related
  • Watched any pay TV, nor catch-up TV, never streamed anything, listened to a podcast, nor watched anything on YouTube or similar
  • Had a Facebook account - or anything like it (no snapchat, twitter, tiktok, instagram etc.)
  • Used an AI assistant, nor an Alexa or similar
  • Meditated, practised yoga nor mindfulness, 'detoxed' nor fasted
  • Had a pet cat or dog
  • Worn jeans, corduroy, chinos, a hoodie, a leather jacket, never worn a hat as an adult

I'm a man, so could add I have also never used moisturiser, makeup, hair dye, nail varnish, etc., and I have never been on a stag do (two hen dos, though)

What madness is this? I only cook for myself so I make big batches of whatever and portion it out into takeaway containers, then freeze them. I can fit three containers into the bottom of one of those big square-ish shopping bags, stack another five layers on top, and then the full bag of "ready meals" fits perfectly into one third of my freezer. I will put the containers in the microwave to defrost if I failed to take it out of the freezer well in advance but then it goes in a pan to heat.

I also use to boxes for other food, in the fridge, cupboards, whatever. There's a few boxes in the under stairs cupboard with nails and screws in them. I use them for everything, really 😀

Edited

I had a working-class upbringing of the kind you describe but am now happily more relaxed (though admittedly I'm sort of middle class now as I went to uni and have a 'professional' type job).

usedtobeaylis · 23/10/2025 10:22

It's not really 'everyone' and more 'everyone on social media' but I also don't do all the Christmas Eve stuff. Or the 'Christmas Month' stuff. Or 'boo baskets'. I mean come on. I don't do balloon arches either. And I absolutely do not pretend that housework is a hobby worthy of spending fortunes in B&M on cleaning products.

I have no tattoos and I've never listened to a pod cast or cleaned my skirting boards.

I am glad I am not the only one who goes blind when it comes to skirting boards

RampantIvy · 23/10/2025 10:25

My skirting boards attract a lot of dust. I don't understand why it is a badge of honour not to dust them. DD has a dust mite allergy so I so need to keep on top of the dust.

I never listen to the radio
I don't read or own a single book
I have never listened to a podcast
I don't knit
I have never watched Friends
I don't own any jeans
I've never had a bigmac (not veggie)

You don't read? Books are brilliant. Nothing beats reading amazing literature 😎✨️

Same. If my mother had anything to do with us I’m sure she’d faint at my how I keep my home. I’m not laboriously cleaning and washing but I do have standards. I travelled and was a bit nomadic in my 20s, virtually lived out of a bag for years, a very different life to how I was raised.
