How old is your cheese grater?

Mine is 18 years old. I won’t replace it until I don’t know when, but it made me think about how old some of my kitchen stuff is. My knives are 25 years old, I had them as an 18th birthday present and I still use them daily.

I remember clearly being horrified at how old some of the things my mother had when I was growing up, and now I am that person!

My sieves are quite new, they seem to develop holes where they shouldn’t have holes. But my colander (oxo) is also well in to double digits.

Cheese grater is also 15 years old!

Palette knife is about 50 years old and going strong, that is my oldest item

I can't remember exactly how old my cheese grater is, but I definitely had it when I moved in with DH, which was 23 years ago!

One of our Cheese graters is at least 30 years old as I had it as a student. It may well not have been new then.
My Mum's favourite one is closer to 50 years old, although my dad does sharpen it for her.

I’m not sure about the cheese grater but my slow cooker is 41! It used to be my mum’s.

My cheese grater was about 25 years old, had to finally replace it last month, even the kids were sad to see it replaced! However a nice sharp new one is unsurprisingly much more effective. I have a tray I keep bits on it the cupboard and I’d hazard a guess at it being from the 80s, we had it growing up and it ended up going with me when I moved out (one of those melamine ones, had a very faded brown leaf pattern on it).

My cheese grater is 20 years old, I started from scratch when I split with my ex so bought everything new then. I have a couple of serving spoons that were my Grandparents they must be close to 100 years old

Mine is about 35 years old!! And still sharp! I inherited it, and got rid of my more modern one because it was rubbish in comparison.

My potato peeler was my grandmother's. 🥔She died in 1990 and it was already pretty old then. I think it's known as a Lancashire peeler. Wooden handle with orange string wrapped around it near the top that holds the metal peeler blade in place.

God no idea. I have knives I bought to go to university in 1987, the cooks knife, palette knife and steel are still going strong

I moved back to the U.K. & packed up my kitchen overseas to stay there (long story) then travelled etc, shared a house, so this cheese grater is from when I moved in here. 15 years ago. The top handle became brittle & snapped off, it now fits standing up perfectly on the shelf. I can see many more happy years for us 🤗

Mine is 42.

I inherited my mothers cheese and nutmeg grater in 1966 and still use them.

Our pepper grinder was a wedding present for my parents in the mid 70s , not sure about the cheese grater but I dont remember buying newso it was probably DHs when we got married so at least 23 years old.
We bought a new frying pan this year but nearly everything else is probably 15+ years old.

Except wine glasses - its quite embarrassing how often we manage to break them , they probably get replaced every year or 2

The cheese grater I use most often was given to my parents when they married in 1955

I have just recalled I have a wicker bread basket which is definitely from the 1970s. Not entirely sure where it is, but it gets used for bbqs and the like!

Im pleased I am not the only one with kitchen antiques. I always wonder who is buying all of the kitchen items as unless you are starting from scratch or again most things last forever.

im not sure I can sharpen the grater, but I might have a google to see!

My dad’s can opener was from WW1. He lost it 2 years ago moving house. 🙁

My cheese grater is at least 25 years old. My saucepans are too, as are a set of four bowls that I hate that stubbornly refuse to break.

I think tin openers must be one of our most replaced kitchen items. We’ve probably been through 5 or 6 over 25 years.

Only about a month old because I had to replace the old one which had a broken handle for about 3 years.

I have my mom’s old potato peeler. It must be about 30 years old. i’ve bought others but none seem to work the same!

Inherited from my dad, who got it from grandma. estimated age approx 60 - 70 years old.

My palette knife is also bordering on antique - my Mum had a Prestige wall-mounted utensil set with wooden handles for a wedding present in 1959 and the palette knife is all that survives!

Mine was bought in 1965 from the (long gone) Army and Navy Store in Victoria Street London, so it's 60 years old. It doesn't get much use these days as I prefer Parmesan shavings done with a sharp knife.

@Arrrrrrragghhh oh that’s tragic. Has he asked St Anthony or is it definitely gone?

Most of my cutlery was a canteen my parents received as a wedding present more than 50 years ago, plus a two person set I was given as a student (late 90s) and a small set which came from Woolies at least 20 years ago!

My cheese grater is IKEA and only about 20 years old.
