How old is your cheese grater?

Mine is 18 years old. I won’t replace it until I don’t know when, but it made me think about how old some of my kitchen stuff is. My knives are 25 years old, I had them as an 18th birthday present and I still use them daily.

I remember clearly being horrified at how old some of the things my mother had when I was growing up, and now I am that person!

My sieves are quite new, they seem to develop holes where they shouldn’t have holes. But my colander (oxo) is also well in to double digits.

Don’t they get blunt? I have an old box grater but I mostly use a micro plane which is a year old.

I have some baking dishes which my nanna had as a wedding gift in the late 40s. Still going strong every Sunday!

My cheese grater is about 15 years old, Electric carving knife I bought at a car boot sale for £1 in 1998, it was already 18 years old when I bought it then !, still going strong. M & S plates were bought in 1987, still in every day use , not a chip in sight.A set of 3 stainless steel pans from Wilko's are 30 years old. Most of my pyrex dishes are from 60s/70s My potato masher is from the 1970s and was my Mum's. Everything was built to last back then, unlike today.

My cheese grater is about 17 years old. It replaced my trusty mouli grater which was about 35 when it finally rebelled and the grater drum split.
My mum has a knife which belonged to her grandad. It started as a regular one handled dinner knife, but was sharpened so often that the blade is about half it's original size. My mum is in her mid 80's and my Great grandfather died in 1970, so I would hazard a guess that the knife is a similar to my mum.

I still use handtools of my grandfather's. He doubtless got some of them from his father, or maybe even earlier. They are 120 to 150 years old at least.

Literally have no idea. At least 25 years, if it’s before DH and I lived together might be about 28.
I know I’ve replaced the tin opener and peeler in that time.

I had a Magimix food processor in the 1970s which went on and on. 20 odd years ago I gave it to DD1. She is still using it, whereas 2 replacements I've bought for myself have since broken. Last year I found an unused 1980s Magimix new in box on eBay and bought it. I have learned my lesson!
My breadknife is a Prestige one bought in a charity shop in Manchester in the early 70s. Still going strong.

22 years. Like many of the items in my kitchen, including my microwave. Bought them when I first moved back to the UK.

The plates that I use at nearly every mealtime are older, though. Bought them as a university student 33 years ago from the kitchen reject shop! I do have other, fancier plates, but the old ones are my favourites!

Oganesson118 · 07/10/2025 13:45

My cheese grater is 12 years old as it was bought as a job lot of stuff when DH (DBF at the time) and I moved in together.

My electric mixer gave up the ghost the other day and that was given to me by my Gran 21 years ago and she had had it for a good few years before that.

Biffsboys · 17/10/2025 09:59

I have just replaced my Wok after 32 years . Replacement is sadly inferior .

FurForksSake · 17/10/2025 12:17

That’s good going, I seem to burn through woks. My ken hom current one has lasted a few years though.

No idea, but my mum's one is the only one I've known at her house and I'm 56!
