How old is your cheese grater?

Mine is 18 years old. I won’t replace it until I don’t know when, but it made me think about how old some of my kitchen stuff is. My knives are 25 years old, I had them as an 18th birthday present and I still use them daily.

I remember clearly being horrified at how old some of the things my mother had when I was growing up, and now I am that person!

My sieves are quite new, they seem to develop holes where they shouldn’t have holes. But my colander (oxo) is also well in to double digits.

@YouForgotToTurnItOff now, now we’ll have no guilt about the number. I have three, plus a rotary somewhere. Well actually

  1. ikea og grater, dark blue with a removal lid and grater lid
  2. ikea grater as above but light blue and with a fine and normal grater (why we bought it I’ve know idea)
  3. microplane
  4. tiny wee thing, nutmeg grater? I use it for one sandwich
  5. standing grater that is a v shape from ikea, bought to replace the above microplane when the handle came off. Turns out to be crap but usable. I repaired the microplane handle with sugru.
  6. I have a set of lidded bowls, the biggest has a small disc removable in the lid that can be replaced with a grating disc. I’ve never used it, but I have it.
  7. camping tool with multiple attachments, one of which is a very sharp grater.

@FurForksSake I got so carried away describing them I forgot to say how old they were! Mum's was around in the 80's but probably was hers before (she died 2014 so I can't ask!), IKEA one was with my fiance when we first moved in around 2005 and the 2 littlies are appx 5 yrs and 2 yrs old (last one was from a cracker!).

I also have a rotary one but kept being put off when you have to whizz your finger around in it to get the danglies off at the end...thus ending every grating session with a full on cheesy finger.

Oh I just remembered my eyelash curler! I've had it since I was 16 - so almost 30 years. I still use it most days. I don't know why, I don't wear makeup anymore and I don't think it even achieves anything, but there we are.

Do they still even make eyelash curlers anymore??

I also have a gilet that I've worn every year since I was 18. Gap. They made em good back then!

I like that a lot of my kitchen stuff isn't new. I also have lots of things from my late parents house. Pyrex serving dishes, slotted spoon, colander, pans, potato masher. DS has plates, bowls and cutlery from their collection.

With stuff of my own, I don't replace things to just have new. If it's not worn out there's no need to

cordeliabuffy · 03/10/2025 21:12

It’s from Ikea and I had it at uni so.. 20 years?

Denim4ever · 03/10/2025 21:13

Re graters - the little one is about 10 yrs old, the larger one a bit newer

ZiggyZowie · 03/10/2025 21:13

My colander is 45 years old

ElinorDashwood68 · 03/10/2025 21:15

38 years!

toottootmummy · 03/10/2025 21:16

My plastic laundry basket is 24 years old, still look brand new.

TroysMammy · 03/10/2025 21:18

I inherited my cheese grater 34 years ago. It could be in its 50s.

HopeSpringsInfernal · 03/10/2025 21:20

cheese grater, Pyrex bowls, wooden spoons & spatula 47 years old.
My spoons & spatula have a lovely patina now from all the years of using them.

Some of my pans date from the early 1980s, but they're le creuset, so pretty much indestructible (unless you drop them - I'm looking at you, brother dear!)

wendywoopywoo222 · 03/10/2025 21:20

My mum bought an old cheese grater at a jumble sale when they bought their first camper van in 1973 and they carried it and never used it and passed it to me and it has travelled with me for the last 8 years and I’ve used it once.

Glittertwins · 03/10/2025 21:23

One of my cheese graters is nearly 30 years old. Our saucepans are 25 years old (wedding presents)

TroysMammy · 03/10/2025 21:23

I have the trifle dish from when I was a child which was used for birthday jelly and blancmange. It was my parents' wedding present in 1967.

PrettyParrot · 03/10/2025 21:24

I don't ask him personal questions 😁

TroysMammy · 03/10/2025 21:24

Oh and the table cloth that was only used for birthday parties.

Harrysmummy246 · 03/10/2025 21:24

Think this is the grater DH had before I moved in with him in 08 but not sure. Definitely still have some of the stuff I went to uni with in 2000 though

And some stuff that was my grandparents'

Hawkeyethenew · 03/10/2025 21:26

Not something I thought I’d be asking when I woke up today - but if anyone wanted to share a picture of their ancient cheese graters (or other kitchen implements) I’m intrigued! 😁 Mine have never lastedmore than a couple years.
I have a bread maker over 20 years old still going strong, same for my slow cooker. Old stalwarts in my pantry.

AnnieMay55 · 03/10/2025 21:30

My cheese grater is 46 years old. It came from Timothy Whites which was part of Boots and sold household things. It is cream plastic on the outside. I had lots of kitchen stuff from there but think I may only have this and a cake container left. They were all creams, brown or orange which was the colour of kitchens at the time.

notthatoldchestnut · 03/10/2025 21:31

Ooh I have some old stuff too.

my cheese grater is at least 20 years old. I had it when I moved into my first flat.
my stick blender was a cheap £5 job from Sainsbury’s. That’s at least 15 years old and gets used weekly.

Namechangerage · 03/10/2025 21:32

12 years old - not too bad.

But we have an ice cream scoop that’s about 75 years old :)

Growlybear83 · 03/10/2025 21:32

My mum bought the cheese grater I use when they first got married in 1945, so it’s 80 years old and still works perfectly.

BlueberryLatte · 03/10/2025 21:33

I just bought a new one, so about a month old!

Lots of things in my kitchen are quite old though. The oldest is probably some cutlery I inherited from my grandmother. They are pretty ancient!

Evolutionarygoals · 03/10/2025 21:35

I've no idea how old the cheese grater is, but probably about 20 years. Our toaster was DH's when he was at uni, and he graduated in 2000 so I think it's doing pretty well. Every now and again I hanker after a prettier one, but at this point I'm curious to see how long it lasts for. It's possible I'll go my entire life without having to buy a toaster 🤔

I think our cheese grater is as old as our marriage - 39 years! I have often wondered why it never gets blunt.
