How old is your cheese grater?

Mine is 18 years old. I won’t replace it until I don’t know when, but it made me think about how old some of my kitchen stuff is. My knives are 25 years old, I had them as an 18th birthday present and I still use them daily.

I remember clearly being horrified at how old some of the things my mother had when I was growing up, and now I am that person!

My sieves are quite new, they seem to develop holes where they shouldn’t have holes. But my colander (oxo) is also well in to double digits.

Ours is about 20 years old.

I think the oldest thing in our kitchen is a bread knife that's 35ish years old.

I'm quite proud of our kettle which we bought in 2004 and is still going strong, although I actually fancy a change when our new kitchen is finished 😉

My cheese grater is at least a decade old - some of my plates are at least 70 years old - they were my granny’s and then my mums and now mine. My favourite sauté pan is about 20 years old as are a lot of my saucepans. My brother has an ongoing row with my mum because her pizza slice is older than him, at least 35 years old - we got it for free with a good fellows pizza when I was a kid. He thinks she needs a new one but it works fine! If it’s not broke don’t replace it!

20 years and counting, as are many of my kitchen items. I’m not one to replace anything for the home unless it no longer functions

squashyhat · 03/10/2025 21:57

At least 50 years. I inherited it from my Mum.💞

unsync · 03/10/2025 22:08

I have knives and pans that belonged to my great grandmother. She was born in the last quarter of the 1800s. Some of it is probably pushing 100 years or more as I suspect it came from her parents.

No one ever throws anything away in my family. It's like living in a museum. There's weird kitchen stuff including the longest knife - for ham apparently - it's very good for getting stuff from underneath the kitchen cabinets - they date from the 1950s and are steel.

My pepper grinder is about 15 years old which I am incredibly pleased about as they die so quickly. I got an excellent set of cooking knives that cost very little from Argos in 2012 when I moved out which I am nowhere near needing to replace. The cheese grater belonged to my in laws and is at least 20 years old. I have my mum's Cousance cookware (from Auchan in Calais back in 2000, very similar to Le Creuset, still going strong). And my grandma's melamine mixing bowl which must be at least 50 years old.

underseige05 · 03/10/2025 23:25

About 17/18 years old possibly older

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 03/10/2025 23:51

12 years old.

Crushed23 · 04/10/2025 01:23

DP bought me a hairdryer a few months ago and I realised I had had my old one for 15 years! Still works fine but the new one is smaller and more powerful.

B0D · 04/10/2025 01:39

current one is from a charity shop bought to replace a 25 year old from Woolworths that had a loose handle.
this one is pretty old because the handle is riveted on and it’s made in Italy,
I have my grandmother’s teak breadboard she was born in the 19th century! And my mums silver tablespoon engraved with her name that she took to boarding school in 1947

Biffsboys · 04/10/2025 02:07

My cheese grater is about 20 years old . My wok was an engagement gift which makes it around 32 years old 😳

WearyAuldWumman · 04/10/2025 02:09

40 yrs. Some of my kitchen implements are older - I'm 65.

JBJ · 04/10/2025 02:19

Cheese grater is probably about 5 years old, but my cutlery set is 25 and was a wedding present. Long divorced, but the cutlery is still going strong!

Thelonelydonkey · 04/10/2025 02:39

29 years old. Bought when started uni. My mum's was 50 years old when she died (was a present for her first marriage). Sadly my step dad has since binned it. Whilst not a thing of beauty, it was the sharpest grater ever.

Pollypolls · 04/10/2025 03:14

My grater broke after 23 years. It was riveted box grater and just fell apart

Dresdan · 04/10/2025 03:23

I've just bought our 3rd set of Pyrex casseroles. They keep chipping. Must be doing it wrong.

Also I've just bought some heavy bottomed stainless steel pans, after realising the one we got as a wedding gift is still as good as new after 24 years. In contrast the non stick ones we got at the same time died so many years ago I don't even remember what they looked like.

placemats · 04/10/2025 03:31

I remember me and my mum buying her cheese grater when I was a teenager. I was using it a week after she died, approximately 50 years later.

unsurewhattodoaboutit · 04/10/2025 03:40

About 28 years old! Never thought about that before! I have a plate that is 35 years old I got from Argos.

That's nothing, my hairdryer is at least 30 years old and it's just a cheapy travel one.

I recently bought a 'good' hairdryer that was relatively expensive but despite it's promises about fast drying and making my hair look amazing it performs worse than my old cheap one, which could be replaced for under £20, on both counts and tbh, I think I'm going to sell it and just use the other one, even at home.

Megsdaughter · 04/10/2025 07:40

I have a cheese slicer, that my boss ( i was a nanny and the family had one at home that I covetted) brought back from a visit home to Iceland.

It's 35 years old. You can buy similar in Ikea now but had never seen one before.

moreveganeis · 04/10/2025 08:18

My bread bin was old before it was given to my grandparents when they set up house. Nearly 150 years old we think - the new lid, which was made when the old one got broken in 1929… is still holding up well🤣

Glittertwins · 04/10/2025 08:20

Come to think of it, a lot of our basic kitchen stuff is nearly 30 years old, bought from Ikea in their home starter kit or wedding presents. Shame I can’t say the same about the oven, washing machine or dishwasher though!

Notjustabrunette · 04/10/2025 08:23

I bought it when I bought my first flat, which was 16 years ago. My parents one must be over 30 years old.

Tintackedsea · 04/10/2025 08:37

Over 20 years old for the cheese grater. I bought it in Woolworths!

I have lots of kitchen stuff that’s much older. Pots and pans from the 60s/70s, baking tins from the 50s.
