I just want a decent mug

One that has a good capacity and keeps drinks hot for a good while. I’ve just received two Emma Bridgewater and want to cry. What a waste of money the medium size is tiny and they hardly turn heads for £25. I don’t mind quirky and I don’t mind animals not too keen on florals. Capacity is everything so at least 500mls. My mother always insists on white inside? Is that a thing?

Depending on your budget, an Ember smart mug might be the answer for keeping drinks warm. I have one (I got it from Vinted for £30) and it honestly is magical. You tell it what your preferred temperature is and it will let the drink cool to that temperature (unlike insulated cups which keep it scalding) and then hold it there so your drink just stays at the perfect temperature the whole time. I’d replace mine tomorrow if it broke. It’s hand wash only because of the electrical element and I do feel a bit ridiculous having an app for my mug but it’s worth it.

The prices have gone up though and the 400ml one is really steep to maybe Vinted/ Black Friday/ present?

Yes it has to be white inside. I hunted everywhere for a new mug, i was pulling my hair out and nearly bankrupt after buying so many only to discard them. I was on a weekend away when i found my new love. A Marks & Spencer mug from the 1980s in pristine condition. It cost me 50p and it is perfect.

My new favorite huge mugs were a gift from Joe Browns. I went to look for them but they have disappeared.

They did have this beauty. Not for you but 😍

I'm surprised anyone has trouble finding a decent mug, my problem is not buying any more mugs.

BiddyPopthe2nd · 30/09/2025 15:46

I love Dunoon mugs, a few of theirs are 480 ml, 500ml and even 600ml. Lots and lots of patterns to choose from. And have a lovely feel to them.

I had a Glencairn shaped one (with the nautical alphabet flags on it - so I could learn those) but it smashed when DD dropped it after about 5 years.

I replaced that with another Glencairn one (sea forecast areas map..still learning!🤣 - as the alphabet one was no longer available) but also got a Shetland one (with a lighthouse) for my office and a 3rd one a bit smaller for emergencies. They are all very well used!

Not cheap, but worth it.

My favourite big mug is from urban outfitters and more cup shaped but huge and pottery. I’ll be gutted if it breaks.

i used to love the big thick pot ones Habitat sold in the late 80s / early 90s and have never found any others as good. I’m going to treat myself to some from a pottery when I’ve moved house.

Bloozie · 30/09/2025 18:48

I will only drink out of Whittards bone china mugs.

Not even joking.

allmymonkeys · 30/09/2025 19:04

I like the Denby craftsman mugs. If you want the drink really really hot you'd better warm the mug first because they're good stout earthenware.

Papyrophile · 30/09/2025 20:32

Dunoon again... the bee's knees! And always bone china.

I love these, too. I was annoyed when I replaced my ancient Clever Coffee Dripper only to discover that they had made the bottom slimmer so it no longer fitted on top of my favourite blue stripey bucket.

When was this?! My clever dripper is only maybe 2 years old and still fits my cornishware mug (albeit snugly).

GiantTeddyIsTired · 30/09/2025 21:57

Oh see we clearly have different tastes.

I too have been searching for the right mug, and to me, balance is everything, along with being able to fit 3 fingers in the handle, and ideally no heavier than they have to be, and I can't abide a thick rim - ideally it's quite delicate.

I like these Ikea glass ones https://www.ikea.com/ie/en/p/skuggstubb-mug-mixed-colours-brown-green-30594716/?utm

because they do all that and they're pretty - but they're not 500 ml (probably about 330ml, which seems normal to me), and they're definitely not white.

Christ, it's right there on the link, 410ml... what a wally seeing that staring at me when I submitted the post.

Very recent. About 3 months ago.

Gorondola · 01/10/2025 05:35

I recently bought this as a gift for someone that was also after a larger capacity mug. Nearly sent it back on arrival because it seemed just like a normal mug, but because the walls are thin, it actually takes a lot and really lovely to wrap your hands around. Recipient loves it and uses every day.

I'm not vegan etc but bone china freaks me out with the thought of that powered bone, I know it's glazed etc but still 🤮.

My favourite mug of the moment is a cheap Halloween one from Tesco. It's huge, really comfy and well insulated.

It's got to be a Herdy Hello or Peep mug. They're perfect (and white inside) but 400ml not 500ml. Could you compromise on that?

This is my favourite mug! I have the purple one!

Yeah, real ground up bone. I think its from bovine femurs?

MissRainbowBrite · 02/10/2025 09:39

My favourite mug is a Cath Kidston Stanley mug, I’ve got an all year round one and a Christmas design one. Lovely to hold and a good size. They do loads of different designs.

I am vegan and I didnt even connect that!! (luckily Im too clumsy to have any bone china!!).
I got some nice big chunky mugs from TKMaxx recently.

EachandEveryone · 28/10/2025 11:07

Thanks for this. I followed lots of links and these are the three I use the most. None of them cheap but the Denby is just gorgeous and on sale. The m and s flowered one is big! and very fine the Eleanor Bowner one is thicker but has a quirky design on it, I’ve enjoyed the research.

I bought the RepeatRepeat mugs and they are tiny - I even measured the amount of water they take and it is really 400ml, it's just the mug itself is teeny weeny but clearly bigger on the inside.
