I just want a decent mug

One that has a good capacity and keeps drinks hot for a good while. I’ve just received two Emma Bridgewater and want to cry. What a waste of money the medium size is tiny and they hardly turn heads for £25. I don’t mind quirky and I don’t mind animals not too keen on florals. Capacity is everything so at least 500mls. My mother always insists on white inside? Is that a thing?

Ever shopped at Sports Direct?

Nobumsonthetable · 29/09/2025 18:16

My best mugs are the ones I get as souvenirs!

SarahAndQuack · 29/09/2025 18:19

Little Wren Pottery does lovely large mugs - they're gorgeous, too. Not super cheap but it's a genuine small business.

I think if you want them to keep drinks hot they just need to be reasonably thick - which, I know, not everyone likes.

I find basic good mugs at Sainsbury from Habitat. Not beautiful but fine and functional.

But for 500ml how about these ceramic striped ones, white inside from Amazon?

TomatoSandwiches · 29/09/2025 18:22

The hottest tea I've ever had is at my nans house with a tall bone China thin rimmed cup ( white inside).

JurassicPark4Eva · 29/09/2025 18:22

I swear by these:

Try TK Maxx. I've bought nearly all of my favourite mugs from there and you can see how big they are and decide if you love them before you buy them.

I've also had some decent ones from Dunelm, and I think they always state capacity. I'd never buy a mug with less than 350ml capacity, preferably 400. 500 is big!

Mintearo7 · 29/09/2025 18:25

I have a great, large capacity mug from Anthropology. Worth looking there.

AutumnCosy2025 · 29/09/2025 18:27

I think white inside is a 'thing' I certainly prefer it & wouldn't buy dark coloured ones. I don't like being given dark ones elsewhere, but I'd never say anything.

500ml is seriously HUGE though & in all seriousness, the Sports Direct Mugs might suit you. My Grandad used to love the size of them & it used to be very very difficult to get them so big elsewhere, but there are more available on Amazon these days.

Seconding these, my absolute favourite.

You want a Dunoon type mug for nearly a pint. Henley shape Glencoe shape . The bone china is durable and they are thin enough they don't cool the tea.

It's got to be a Herdy Hello or Peep mug. They're perfect (and white inside) but 400ml not 500ml. Could you compromise on that?

500ml is a lot - almost a pint!

Are you a tea drinker or coffee? If tea, you might be better off with a teapot with a cosy over it to keep it warm?

RedRiverShore5 · 29/09/2025 18:40

The tall Dunoon mugs are large

shellyleppard · 29/09/2025 18:41

Op try a lovely lady called Rachel at www.fatpoppycat.co.uk. She has lovely handmade mugs with a good half pint capacity .

I was going to say that. They have Le Creuset mugs too.

SarahAndQuack · 29/09/2025 19:01

No, don't buy thin bone china to keep 500ml of tea warm!

You have to treat the mug like a teapot. Boil the kettle, pour the boiling water into your mug and swill it round so the mug isn't cold, then put your teabag into the mug and make your tea.

Memberofstaff · 29/09/2025 19:16

Bone china is what you need to keep your drink hot.

justasking111 · 29/09/2025 19:17

My favourite mug is a black witches cauldron bought at Halloween from Asda years ago. I think it's the shape that keeps it hot , narrow, big belly, then narrow at the top.

Sorry I think I got my measurements wrong and 400mls will do. I forgot to say I’m having cancer treatment and walking with a stick. I bloody long to go to my local TK Maxx it’s been a year since I’ve had a proper shop. I just can’t carry a bag and use the stick so everything is online. I think this is the reason I’m drinking more tea as well. Watching too much tv .
