I just want a decent mug

One that has a good capacity and keeps drinks hot for a good while. I’ve just received two Emma Bridgewater and want to cry. What a waste of money the medium size is tiny and they hardly turn heads for £25. I don’t mind quirky and I don’t mind animals not too keen on florals. Capacity is everything so at least 500mls. My mother always insists on white inside? Is that a thing?

My best mugs have all come from charity shops outside of London. Cambridge and Colchester were particularly good.

Get a usb mug warmer - my coffee never goes cold, even if it takes me an hour to drink it!

I've had those for over 10 years, they keep my tea warm and no chipping https://amzn.eu/d/176Sg6d

I think white inside is a 'thing' I certainly prefer it & wouldn't buy dark coloured ones. I don't like being given dark ones elsewhere, but I'd never say anything.

500ml is seriously HUGE though & in all seriousness, the Sports Direct Mugs might suit you. My Grandad used to love the size of them & it used to be very very difficult to get them so big elsewhere, but there are more available on Amazon these days.

I had to come back to say, my new mug I bought at Sainsburys the other day is actually almost 500ml! It's the Big Boo Halloween mug. Only £5 & just what I was looking for, for my latte mug. All my others are either not big enough or too tall to go under the fitting in the machine ! I'm fed up of washing up 2 mugs & pre heating 2 mugs etc to make 1 latte. (It's bream, not white inside. But it's fine)

I do like the Cornish Vomosny Mugs linked to above, very tempted to order the cat & the spider in the black strioe.... but running out of room in the mug cupboard & nowhere else to put them & no others I want to get rid of, do I'll probably just keep admiring them & maybe buy one fir Christmas time when the Halloween one can get packed away in the 'Autumn/Halloween' box.

hmm maybe I can have excess mugs if they're seasonal?! So perhaphs I can order the cat & the spider????

Bone china mugs are the best for hot drinks. I find in regular mugs they cool a lot quicker. I assume the extra thickness draws the heat out more whereas once a thinner mug is warm, the drink stays hot. Not a scientist. Just my own quirky logic.

and for fine bone china mugs, best range we’ve ever found is at a town market!! The stalls do pint sized ones, tall ones, regular, small.

might not be any help but it’s certainly where I’d look.

Came here to say Le Creuset or Cornishware mugs, PPs have beaten me to it.

Bone china is what you need to keep your drink hot.

And tea tastes way better out of a bone china cup.

Coffee....not so much but you can have different mugs!

I like Denbies mugs for coffee.

dynamiccactus · 30/09/2025 08:21

If you want bone china, have a look in charity shops too.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 30/09/2025 08:30

Search 400ml bone China in Amazon and loads of nice mugs appear, less than £30 for 6.

This is my favourite mug

Great capacity, white inside (though not sure why that's a thing) and the stoneware fabrication and narrower top circumference keep my drinks warmer for way longer than any of our other mugs.

You're welcome.

It may not be a current model but am sure Denby will still ne making similar.

Handmade mugs! I no longer have generic just some lovely good sized handmade ones by a local lady. They are a pleasure to drink from and cost the same as a generic Emma bridge water mug

500ml is a lot - almost a pint!

Are you a tea drinker or coffee? If tea, you might be better off with a teapot with a cosy over it to keep it warm?

A pint? That’s very nearly an armful!

ThirdDesk · 30/09/2025 12:48

Those plum mugs are beautiful. I'm always on the look out for jug shaped mugs you can wrap your hands around.

Esmereldapawpatrol · 30/09/2025 12:50

I love Starbucks mugs, I have one at work and one at home as they are my favourite. They are the ones with places on them that you can collect around the world. They fit a decent size drink in them.

WoodenBoat80 · 30/09/2025 13:22

Are you anywhere near a Tkmaxx, I get all of my mugs from there.

If you're willing to compromise on capacity Denby do some great mugs

I think wanting to cry because you've been given two mugs you don't like is a bit much however.

Catwalking · 30/09/2025 14:00

Get a stainless steel 1, double wall, then it’ll keep hot much longer than ceramic versions. Also if you can find a ‘polished’/shiny version it’ll reflect surrounding colours if you need colours rather than grey stainless. There are several @ ebay.
