I just want a decent mug

One that has a good capacity and keeps drinks hot for a good while. I’ve just received two Emma Bridgewater and want to cry. What a waste of money the medium size is tiny and they hardly turn heads for £25. I don’t mind quirky and I don’t mind animals not too keen on florals. Capacity is everything so at least 500mls. My mother always insists on white inside? Is that a thing?

You want a Dunoon type mug for nearly a pint. Henley shape Glencoe shape . The bone china is durable and they are thin enough they don't cool the tea.

I agree. I love Dunoon mugs.

I love my set of le creuset mugs. I spent ages agonising over whether to buy the rainbow set but I am pleased I did. They look really nice on their own or together. 350ml so not massive but pretty good. They work out just over a tenner each.

Lollipop2025 · 29/09/2025 21:06

Le creuset are my absolute favourite mugs.

These in Morrisons. £4. Bone china. 400ml capacity. They also have a black and white hedgehog design. Slightly twee but I like them and they are the perfect size/material.
I can’t see them online.

This is my favourite mug ever. I bought blue and pink. You want a big one.

I bought my brother mugs for Christmas one year from this place and they were lovely. Quite heavy but I think that helps with heat retention. https://www.mudireland.com/shop/ (I know it says Ireland in the name but they are in Northern Ireland so no import difficulties for either the UK or Ireland.)

I particularly like this one which is 18 fl oz, which is about half a litre. https://www.mudireland.com/product/wild-atlantic-way-large-mug/

A 'proper' pint mug:

OOh this is the thread for me, thanks OP.
Someone gave me a Sara Miller mug from Portmerion many years ago. It's white, the print has now washed off and it has a tiny chip. It is beautiful bone china, capacity of 400ml I think and it's perfect. I tried to get another one recently, but the product is no longer the same, it's not bone china, so feels clunky.
I'm looking at these with envy as I'd like to treat myself, but I've still not seen the perfect one. I like it to have a slight lip on it, not too big, not too small. No fiddly handles. And not straight sides.
Keen to see all the recommendations.

Polish pottery. They do a large which is 500ml and a medium at 350ml. They are lovely mugs and last really well, I’ve had mine for years.

justasoul · 29/09/2025 21:52

Thirding the le creuset mugs. The sizing is perfect for the one cup type of kettle plus a good splash of milk without spillage. Mine is the 350ml one but they also do a 400ml.

ExcellentDesigns · 29/09/2025 21:54

Dunoon, bone china, hold the heat well, hold 480mL in this shape and some gorgeous designs. Not cheap but I treasure mine.

I like these big London themed mugs by Ben de Lisi - I bought this red one to replace the black version I'd had for years.. there are quite a few other London themed designs I like - the straight sided 500ml ones - I had to wait for a search on eBay to find the exact one I wanted so they aren't always that easy to get.

My favourites (and I have a real mug thing so totally understand your desire for the perfect specimen) are the Wrendale larger mugs. The standard ones are nice but little but 5e large are 400ml, white inside, some white all over, and a lovely design.

BunnyRuddington · 29/09/2025 22:15

I really like my Moorland Mug but they’re not white inside.

How about a Dunoon Mug? They’re white inside and this page gives the capacity of their mugs including a 750 ml.

ehb102 · 29/09/2025 22:23

I have white W M Bartleet & Sons mugs. Solid, keep a drink hot, hard to knock over, keep the tea warm for a good long while. Originally bought one in a hardware store years ago but have to get them from. Amazon now. Fits a pint of tea in with room to spare. https://amzn.eu/d/gWEcq8q
They are not stained either. They may do other sizes of course.

I got a Yeti thermal mug when I had my first baby because I knew my tea would always go cold while I was busy. It’s brilliant, keeps it hot for hours and can go in the dishwasher. It’s not white inside but is nice to drink from.

vdbfamily · 29/09/2025 22:30

Another Dunoon mug fan here. I have quite the collection and they do some really fun designs. You can get them as new on eBay. I got this one for £6 plus p&p last week for my daughter who also wanted large capacity and cute animal

I got a stanley thermos mug. It'll last a lifetime and keeps the coffee hot. I like its utilitarian look. If you're looking for something cheaper, it's fairly easy to find thermos mugs.

Jollyjoy · 29/09/2025 22:39

You said not florals so don’t know how William Morris design would go down, but these are my fave mugs. Not bone china but keep tea hot and I’m with you on the size - these are nearly a pint and for me the perfect size. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B012CZVO32?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title#averageCustomerReviewsAnchor

I’ve got Denby mugs.
Not this one below, which is currently on sale, bargain!! (because mine aren’t white inside) but same sized, 400ml!
They keep my tea hot. I will time tomorrow exactly how long they keep it hot for, if you like!

I love these, too. I was annoyed when I replaced my ancient Clever Coffee Dripper only to discover that they had made the bottom slimmer so it no longer fitted on top of my favourite blue stripey bucket.

This is my go to big mug:
https://www.sophieallport.com/products/giraffe-stoneware-mug?_pos=5&_sid=8d809020a&_ss=r

500ml capacity and the nicest shape to hold to warm your hands as an added benefit.

I've banned myself from that shape mug because I knock them over too easily.
