what grifting is there to be had by menacing/attacking Venezuela?

Bigly, bigly grifting opportunities await, if Trump succceeds in overthrowing Maduro.

Venezuela has the world's biggest oil reserves and the second largest gold mining reserves. All just sitting in the ground as the economy collapsed under the weight of US sanctions and gov't mismanagement. A US friendly government will allow American companies to invest in lucrative projects ... (any takers for new companies called Trump Oil and Trump Gold Mines?)

The kickbacks donations from US companies keen to operate in all aspects of rebuilding a country with immense unexploited wealth will put Qatar's plane to shame. Plus his boys could gain a whole new market for Trump Coin.

Venezuela's political allies are Russia, China and Cuba, so regime change will lessen their influence in the region and serve as a warning of continued US dominance in the region. Plus Trump gets to demand a Nobel Peace Prize for winning the war against drug smugglers?

Anything to keep the Epstein files from being released. Anything.

Si if they do not resist a US takeover, then it's logical to conclude they are behind it.

I would well believe that "Venezuela's political allies" have sold them down the river. trump, Putin and Xi have far more in common than they have with you or I or anybody halfway decent.

I think it's too early to say that Venezuela's allies are not supporting it.

The scale of US forces threatening the country is OTT for an exercise against drug smuggling, but I'm more inclined to think along the lines of an Epstein files deflection posturing/regime change support, rather than a US takeover.

@CaveMum - it seems the last time the Dems did get it was with President Obama, but when end of his second term arrived, they all misunderestimated the misogyny and racism inherent in Red America, I think. Or is that too simplistic a view?
As an aside, I am finding TRIP US far too optimistic about the state of the US Constitution, in their belief that there will be normal elections at the end of this term, rather than (as I think is highly possible) that Trump will ensure a third term for himself with no, or rigged, elections.

Re Harris. Let her. There will be a primary. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned. I think a good old public slugging it out among the contenders can only be a good thing as I don't think there will be real direction until that happens.

I just hope the party stands back and lets it happen instead of trying to influence the outcome.
