Things from the 90s/00s you don’t see anymore?

What are some things you remember from the 90s or early 2000s that don’t exist anymore?

I remember old ladies used to wear headscarves or those plastic rain bonnets

Lucky heather sellers in town centres

In my gran’s rural village she used to get a mobile library van and also a man selling soft drinks in glass bottles

Any more?

Of course a lot of these things existed before that era too, I just don’t remember seeing them anymore after the early 2000s.

Great fashion in Topshop.

Y2ker · 16/09/2025 15:04

Phone cards.

The mobile video rental man who drove around in a Ford Escort lending out (possibly pirate) vhs tapes for a pound a week.

Going to the travel agency with all your mates aged 17 to book a week in Corfu...
Pix n Mix
The train in London being so rammed that the driver would let you in his carriage.
Call cards in phone boxes. I was slightly obsessed with those.

A lot more music magazines with free CDs in them. I first listened to quite a few bands that way.

Flexi discs on the front of Melody Maker and Smash Hits or did they end in the 80s?

TheNightingalesStarling · 16/09/2025 15:07

Display cases for videos, dvds, cds etc you had to take up to a counter to get the real one.

Photo processing.

The canteen/cafes in service stations. I miss them!

little chef!

People pushing cars down the road. Young women with different hairstyles.

The phone directory or phone book or whatever it's called. My best friend and I used to look up the landlines of other kids in our school (mainly crushes) and prank call them 🤣

Kwik Save!

No Frills from Tesco with blue and white packaging. I think it was Tesco.

Hedgehog flavour crisps.

Little white pencils to go under your fingernails.

Henara shampoo.

Fake decoupage storage boxes.

Free CDs and DVDs in the newspaper.

Tesco Value was the blue (and red) packaging.

Kwik Save had the "No Frills" range which was just black and white with a military-looking font. I remember dreading taking No Frills crisps to school! 😬

They're still there. You've just gotten older so a.) you're less inquisitive about the bug life of the average house brick, and b.) your eyesight has likely gone to shit. (Mine has at least)

This is probably true! I’m going to make a conscious effort to look

Those little tiny red bugs (spiders?) on bricks. Where have they all gone?!

Dancing sunflowers is a good one.

I get those little bugs are in my garden. They are called clover mites and they are arachnids so related to spiders. Well cute, they are.

Bladderpool · 16/09/2025 15:17

My aunty had a weeping willow tree in her garden and it was infested with those tiny red spiders which for some unknown reason we called “money spiders”.

They were probably red spider mites, which are different and are a right pest.

Woolworths!

Mint wispas
M&S used to do a really good roast vegetable sandwich with balsamic dressing on sundried tomato bread. 17 year old me thought it was the most sophisticated thing ever.

Oh god I think I can taste that!

Those blocks of pins where you could imprint your face etc.
Acid tabs
Decent E.
Base amphetamine that would blow your head up.

GreenMarigold · 16/09/2025 15:36

Music newspapers like Melody Maker and NME

Phone boxes and reverse charge calls

Penpals and waiting for the post to arrive

Yes! My own kids are only allowed water and fruit at school 😆

The poor loves. That panda pop and packet of fruity polos from the tuck shop used to power me through afternoon lessons like rocket fuel.

TerrysNeapolitan · 16/09/2025 15:40

TY Beanie baby craze

Having disc(s) to install PC games. Now bought on Steam and other platforms.

Not every other shop is a cafe. See another cafe opening which doesn’t have a unique selling point.
