Things from the 90s/00s you don’t see anymore?

What are some things you remember from the 90s or early 2000s that don’t exist anymore?

I remember old ladies used to wear headscarves or those plastic rain bonnets

Lucky heather sellers in town centres

In my gran’s rural village she used to get a mobile library van and also a man selling soft drinks in glass bottles

Any more?

Of course a lot of these things existed before that era too, I just don’t remember seeing them anymore after the early 2000s.

This might be straying more into late 80's maybe but underskirts. I remember I wore one under my gymslip at school as did many of my friends. Think I stopped when I was about 8 so around 1990 ish.

Yes! When I had dd in the early noughties I was surprised to see that underskirts for little girls didn’t exist anymore. I was a child of the 80’s. We all wore underskirts in winter under our uniform. They were attached to a vest.

SeanMean · 16/09/2025 19:30

Little white pencils to go under your fingernails.

I still have one of these!

Superhansrantowindsor · 16/09/2025 19:30

Old ladies who wore fur lined ankle boots with a zip up the middle.
Men smoking pipes.
phone boxes with phones in.
Phone cards.
Pot pouri
Picture soaps.

Bladderpool · 16/09/2025 19:31

My mum was obsessed with underskirts, she used to wear full slips as well which were a bit like a strappy nighty. I don’t really understand why they were considered so necessary? Unless your dress/skirt was completely see through what was the point of them?

I miss the interior design styles of the 90s... florals and sofa/bed ruffles... wooden kitchen cabinets.... it was so much more homey than the minimalistic everything there seems to be now

Those wallpaper friezes that went round the top of the ceiling or just randomly round the room half way up. Usually in weird Aztec patterns and terracotta and blue colours.

Aaargh pot pouri!!! I had bowls of that smelly shite all over my house. I used to buy it out of Past Times. For some reason my early 90s decor looked a bit like a Victorian parlour.

White dog shit

That properly made me laugh. You're so right. Where's all the white dog shit gone?

StinkyWizzleteets · 16/09/2025 19:39

My feet and my fanny. Both disappeared in 2009

I still wear an underskirt (waist slip) under dresses and skirts in winter. I work in a freezing cold school and don’t like wearing trousers. They definitely help keep me warm.

Mint wispas
M&S used to do a really good roast vegetable sandwich with balsamic dressing on sundried tomato bread. 17 year old me thought it was the most sophisticated thing ever.

I bloody loved that sandwich too

Does anyone else ever feel that the 90's were the sort of last semblance of "normality" (for want of a better word). Or is it just me.

I so do. I said this on another thread recently but it feels to me like the 90s and year 2000 were the last bastions of hope and innocence before 9/11 changed everything.

Catarinabella · 16/09/2025 19:48

Cheesy moments 💔 food of the gods

MissAmbrosia · 16/09/2025 19:48

Dh's hair - at least the dark brown curls part - now disappeared forever.

AnonSugar · 16/09/2025 19:50

The local thief going door to door selling goods nicked from shops. Steak and everything. Used to take orders too!

Harshreality · 16/09/2025 19:54

Decent music with a proper tune

Oooo La Sensa underwear shop did these so nice - and they had the diamonte details on the back T for the ultimate classy look. All wrapped in tissue paper and those smelly beads

OMG I had completely forgotten about that. I used to get lovely pyjamas from there for Christmas. They were £££ but the box, tissue paper and smelly beads made it feel so decadent to teenage me. Actually fully grown adult me would still love that now.

bombastix · 16/09/2025 19:55

20 quid Bollinger, smoking. Good things on the BBC

In Scotland, we had people come round houses and sell sweets (tablet, fudge, macaroons). Tasted great too.

Edited

I had some kids do that a few weeks ago but it doesn’t happen nearly often enough.

butterdish93 · 16/09/2025 20:01

I can still smell the Argos catalogue! The smell of Christmas haha

winterborn · 16/09/2025 20:02

Having a good laugh without anyone getting offended or making it all about them because they are sensitive.

Getting laid after a night pushed up a wall and snogged by man you just met good times.

Just living life.

This is why I don’t like tattoos. Grizzy old seamen in pissed in pubs is my immediate association.

I started going to Northern soul niters early 80s and remember guy's with various gang symbol tattoos, Dundee lads were big on gangs they also had different coloured jumpers made to identify which scheme gang they were in.

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 16/09/2025 20:05

So many shops - The Pier (still miss it so much), ELC and Mothercare when my son was little.

Flexi discs free with magazines

Greasy spoons (full breakfast with chips for £2)

Good music shows on tv

Brookside

Jars of mussels / cockles in tomato sauce. What happened to those!?

Gliblet · 16/09/2025 20:06

SecretRoses45 · 16/09/2025 17:47

Bath pearls

My dad hated bath pearls with the kind of venom most people reserve for bent politicians. Mind you I can't think of a more effective way of invisibly greasing the inside of the bath and rendering it hazardous to step into 😁

Pogs
Independent shops with actual alternative (not mass produced) clothing
Second hand bookstores that stank of fags and old paper
Ziganov multicoloured cigarettes
Really good free gifts on Cosmopolitan
Doctors waiting room magazines

LBFseBrom · 16/09/2025 20:06

Walkmans.
