It's not the ID. It's the massive joined-up database they wanted to put behind it so that a policeman stopping you can access your DWP records and NHS records, and local authority records and criminal records and anything else the state holds on you.

That was the problem last time.

Also remember that the UK is incapable of any large project (Universal Credit, anyone) and when things go wrong, it's nobodies fault.

Remember, I work in IT. And admittedly you'd have to kill me before I worked in local government, however living in Brum and having this happen in slow motion before my eyes has been psychically painful as I know I wouldn't even get an interview.

www.theregister.com/2025/09/24/uk_mega_council_delays_fix/

But it doesn’t have to do that - how does the rest of Europe manage it?

BIWI · 25/09/2025 17:35

Exactly. If it works elsewhere why would it not work here?

remember how special the UK is. If you read the story about Birmingham, they are the same. It would have been inconceivable that they use anything used by any other authority anywhere as then they wouldn't be the special "Birmingham" they felt they are.

You think I jest. Wait till you see that shite CMS. That I could have setup for a fraction the price.

This is the council that sends out letters to update the electoral roll with the userID and password on the same line. Although to be fair it does have a warning about no letting anyone else see them. So that's nice.

I actually think the Reform voters will probably be more upset by it than anyone, cue rants about being a free man of the land and they won’t like being forced to declare and pay tax on the cash in hand jobs many of them do.

But it does go against those protesters who moan about immigrants etc because they claim we don't know who is in the country.

DuncinToffee · 25/09/2025 17:39

I wonder how all does who say the UK is a soft touch for immigrants because it does not have ID will react 🤔

Probably say it's going to fail as swans won't have IDs.

Can’t even get NHS systems integrated so I’m not holding out any hopes (or indeed fears) that this is anything but yet another attempt to out-Farage Farage.

Evenstar · 25/09/2025 17:50

I think the trouble is that the protesters only want ID for other people, much as they would like to leave the ECHR but not lose their own rights. They are mostly not rational.

DuncinToffee · 25/09/2025 17:52

It won't stop the boats, that's why it's a no

Makes you wonder what people would do if the boats were actually stopped

Universal Credit tells us all we need to know.

Bearing in mind this system has to contain everyone in the UK.

Also notice what DOGE did when they had access to the entire US social security database. That's a fucktonne of extremely valuable marketing data right there.

You can see it now.

2025: We will never allow anyone access to the UK ID database.
2027: We well never allow unauthorised access to the UK ID database
2029: The UK ID database is covered by the strongest protections
2031: Only selected UK government partners are allowed access to the UK ID database
2025: Email from Tescos saying "We noticed your children are now nearly 18.Have you thought about getting them a Tesco online account".

and so on.

LlttledrummergirI · 25/09/2025 17:58

I don't like or want ID that you have to produce on demand.
I don't trust the government with my data and certainly don't want it all in one place for them to lose to hackers or sell.
Carrying an ID card won't prevent any of the perceived issues.
The data protection act says i have the right to anonymity, not sure how they will marry that up.
I thought this nonsense died with Sunak and for me was one of the reasons (among many) the tories needed to go.

I'm all for giving Labour a chance, but they really aren't helping themselves.

Indeed.

All the people gladhanding it now are probably thinking "But they can't mean me".

Late, but what happens when you have a hard drive of cat pics.

I carry my driver's license every day. Your mobile phone is a walking talking evidence of identity.

No one ever has demanded my identity on speculation whilst out and about.

Well that'll all change when there's mandatory ID.

Other countries somehow seem to manage with ID cards.

🤣

bombastix · 25/09/2025 19:49

Btw it seems to me that the Government has actually announced something in an intelligent way by getting the PM to trail a potentially controversial policy like ID before releasing the technical details. This lances their usual problems where they announce something and there is uproar, which has been the approach for the last year and a bit. Because all the potential uproar has been diluted in the previous few days.

Almost like they had some comms advice or something

That's a totally different matter and regardless of how much I D they have, digital or otherwise, they'll be targeted.

Mostly targeted for wearing big coats during a heatwave. Shoot me.
