What do you prefer when buying a house?

CVVFan · 15/09/2025 16:13

I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority group that prefer either houses that are ready to move in or that are liveable for at least 2-3 years. I never buy based on a vision/project/putting my stamp on it.

We’re selling our house in 4 years, and quite frankly as much as it’s liveable for whoever buys it, it does look outdated.

I think we’re already on negative equity, so we think we’ll at least need to refresh the kitchen somehow (and possibly the bathrooms) the question is how much work is it sensible considering we’re selling it? The whole pint of the remedial work would be to sell it faster and not get cheeky offers because to some it might look more like a project than a liveable house.

Exactly! I hate WFH

I think anyone would hate WFH if it was a small desk in their 6 year olds single/small double bedroom that is also occupied by their mother for 3 month stays. In fact it makes me come out in a cold sweat just imagining it

Aquickturn81 · 01/10/2025 18:34

So the plan for the big move has been always been 2029? Or has this moved over the years?

ok so basically paid off. And in negative equity?

I don’t like the lack of social interaction, the lack of commute, the walks, the “popping in” for something else. I’ve never liked it regardless of whoever room I’ve had as an office

It’s always been 2029, if anything we brought forward 1 year. But yes, that’s always been the case.

You mean to say since 2015 you have been desperately focussed on this move to London where you will get fulfillment from you job and a better life?

It makes for quite a sad read actually

Yes I lived in Ealing for a few years. I went to London last month.

i visit regularly and hate having to be on a sleeper train or spending hours with patchy WiFi so it’s impossible to work!

and no I having been desperately awaiting… I’ve lived my life. I don’t know what people think I’ve put on hold because of the move.

I’m with the others…. This is a depressing thread.

and I don’t even really understand why you’re talking about negative equity as presumably if you practically own the property… then you well and truly do not have negative equity!

Were the chandeliers there when you bought the house OP?

Just read the thread and I would bet that the chandeliers were included in house purchase and the OP and partner have never got around to replacing in past 4 years

Why the need to be so bitchy??? Honestly some of the comments on this thread are horrible. So what if the OP has plans of where she wants to live when her kids have finished school, it’s called having a dream and whether it stays as a pipe dream or becomes a reality is no one’s business to judge, everyone is entitled to have something they are working towards. Such narrow mindedness going on through this entire thread

Agreed.

Very clearly from this thread and others from the OP this is a ND woman, very unhappy and going through a lot of shit, and clearly living and working in what sounds like a pretty mad environment. If endless planning helps her get through the day to day, who are we to piss over her parade?

But I’m not unhappy! Could I be happier? sure! (But that’s only because of the location where I live, not the house itself).

I’ve been all shades of miserable and right now, I’m definitely living my best life, which I’m very proud of.

Tbf you did say upthread that you spend as much time as possible out of the house because you hate it so much

anyway, all this covered lots.

good luck op

Yeah because it’s the lesser of two evils… locally I could make like 45% of my current salary, thanks but no thanks!
