I’m all for second homes as long as a sensible balance is struck, so I couldn’t care less if AR has one by the sea. The one for ministerial use isn’t relevant, because it’s not hers. No hypocrisy here from this current Labour supporter, so phew, eh.

BIossomtoes · 24/08/2025 09:49

I don’t feel obligated to defend her at all when virtually every MP of every persuasion with a constituency more than about 50 miles from London has a second home.

Piggywaspushed · 24/08/2025 10:00

I am trying to keep off migrant threads but I am infuriated. Why hasn't MN even added disinformation as a reporting category?

Hide them!!

They are really really horrible threads

.

Piggywaspushed · 24/08/2025 10:09

I don't engage - but we have been literally told by MN that it is our job to patrol these threads.

Edited

Thing is hiding them doesn’t address the problem that they shouldn’t exist in the first place. Things got better for a couple of weeks after a particular poster was shown the door but the awful racism is ramping up again now.

Next door has that. When you report someone for it you're told to either correct them or hide the thread. Whether you get that here seems to depend on who picks up your report.

BIWI · 24/08/2025 10:21

I don’t like it when second homes deprive local people of homes. I especially don’t like it when they’re priced at levels too high for local people. Although, presumably prices are set higher than other homes by the locals who sell them in the first place?.

I see nothing wrong with AR buying a second home - and it’s not HER third home @MyNameIsX, as one of those is provided for her, given her role in the government - assuming she pays the same taxes as everyone else.

I’m not sure why you think this is something we have to defend, given that it’s quite legal. (Whether we like it or not).

Yes, flat out lies are not necessarily 'hate speech' - the one I just read was a lie circulated about counter protestors rather than something race related- and so are often left to stand and be circulated and recirculated. If you call it out on a thread you are told you are wrong. are patronised or what have you. And the lie still sits there as if both the lie and the challenge have elements of validity.

Piggywaspushed · 24/08/2025 10:25

I'm actually surprised we haven't been told we can't call people liars a la the HoC.

I tried correcting someone on Next Door. I was promptly banned for two weeks for "belittling and shaming" them.

The whole place is pretty toxic. It's community moderated with all the inconsistency that introduces and then the leads aren't given the tools to lead with actual grifters and trolls who aren't in their immediate neighbourhoods. I'm a local lead and changed my phone recently and haven't even bothered to log in on my new phone.

itsgettingweird · 24/08/2025 11:08

I went to the shop today and on my way home went via a different local road as had to run into corner shop for a parcel.

There are Union jacks flying half lamppost for 1/3 of one end (long road)

Don't know why I’m surprised as this is also the same people who keep voting in Braverman!

Piggywaspushed · 24/08/2025 11:26

And, lo, another hotels thread has popped up.

DuncinToffee · 24/08/2025 11:33

They need to more people to join the gatherings.....

Ah, legal - as in the former housing minister’s shenanigans.

Ethics and morality evidently have no place in this Labour government, despite Starmer campaigning on such a ticket.

Got it.

In the guise of we need to protect the homeless nonsense. Plus the 'get a comfortable bed and a hearty meals' lie.

Maybe they didn't realise that the bank holiday weekend was this weekend? Fools and idiots.

TheNewGaard · 24/08/2025 12:02

The thing is, people buying £800000 second homes in Hove Actually aren't depriving impoverished locals of a home, that's way out of their budget.

If it was sold at a massive discount to an impoverished local, what would they do? Sell it on at a massive profit.

What we need is more affordable and council housing.

PandoraSocks · 24/08/2025 12:03

The anti-immigration people are calling each other racists now!

cardibach · 24/08/2025 09:21

It is a bit misleading to quote her grace and favour apartment as though it’s hers.

Quite. I know a few boarding school teachers and military personnel who are in job provided accommodation who have bought a property, often rented out. After all they are in accommodation that is dependent on their job and it's back up for when they retire/leave that job.

BIWI · 24/08/2025 12:20

What we need is more affordable and council housing.

Absolutely. Thatcher’s move to allow council houses to be bought/sold was a horrific thing to do.

Notonthestairs · 24/08/2025 12:21

"What we need is more affordable and council housing"
Exactly.

We built, on average, around 126,000 council houses each year between 1946-1980. Over 4 million new homes. Thatcher introduced Right to Buy and restricted what councils could build. Construction halved. Numbers dwindled further during Major's years in power - in his last year just 400 were built. Blair did fuck all about it. It was Brown that began to unwind the restrictions on councils.

We need to make up for decades of housing policy failure.

BIWI · 24/08/2025 12:25

I really shoudn’t engage, but ...

Ethics and morality evidently have no place in this Labour government, despite Starmer campaigning on such a ticket.

You need to explain why AR is behaving unethically or immorally.
