Angela Rayner has been criticised for having “three pads” after it emerged on Saturday night that she had added an £800,000 seaside apartment to her property empire.

The Deputy Prime Minister has bought a new “holiday home” in Hove to add to her three-bedroom grace-and-favour flat at Admiralty House, in central London, and a £650,000 constituency home near Manchester.

It comes at a time when she is looking to impose an extra 100 per cent council tax charge on second homes, leading to the Conservatives to call on her to “come clean” about her council tax situation.

The levy is being imposed as people living in popular holiday spots, including Hove, are unable to afford homes where they were brought up due to the number of people buying second homes.

Defend the indefensible….

You're assuming she won't pay the 100% council tax levy when it comes in. Bold of you. Apart from that, so what? Aren't Labour supporters allowed to be rich?

That’s one less property for a local.

Good old Labour ‘do as I say’, not ‘do as I do’.

Utter hypocrites.

pointythings · 24/08/2025 08:00

True, but if Labour banned second home ownership completely, there would be howls of outrage. So as long as Rayner pays her 100% levy, she's no better or worse than anyone else. Personally I would be on board with banning second home ownership, and I would like to see the UK copy the Danish model for MP accommodation, but that's not going to happen. So meanwhile this isn't the huge deal you so want it to be.

Tell me, do you feel similar disapproval of all second home owners irrespective of party affiliation?

I too despise second home ownership. They can hollow out communities and in a housing crisis are very unfair.

Its a grave pity that instead of buying a second home, AR doesnt campign for an end to second home ownership.

That would be change.

I agree, but it is hypocritical not to hold everyone to the same standard. Right now it's legal. And if AR banned second or multiple home ownership, you can bet the loudest howls of fury would come from the political right. The Mail and the Telegraph would have pages and pages about how unfair it all was. You can't have it both ways.

This.

I also have an issue with “prices locals out”. I don’t think it’s as simple as that.

The housing crisis itself and wages and house prices not matching have caused many people not to be able to afford to buy and I’d rather a property paying council tax with a levy and being used and therefore bringing money into an area than say empty.

i do think we should ban second homes and have rent caps etc and far more social rent houses (which don’t require UC top ups from government which goes into the pockets of LL). But I have no issue with someone doing what’s legal.

I’ll be annoyed though if she gets it furnished with gold wallpaper for £80k from a donor 😉

Gandersash · 24/08/2025 08:47

I am not saying she has done anything illegal. But are not Labour here for change? Its very disappointing

They're making plenty of changes. But they have to tread carefully because the British people have some next level preconceptions and expectations. It's going to take time and patience. Meanwhile getting over the double standards would be great- imagine if we expected Reform and Tory politicians to behave the way we do Labour, Greens and Lib Dems?

PandoraSocks · 24/08/2025 09:07

I actually agree that it is disappointing. AR is doing nothing wrong, but it feels a bit off and another opportunity for squawks about champagne socialists etc.

Changing the subject, that migrant protests thread is a toxic waste dump.

DuncinToffee · 24/08/2025 09:12

I just copy Mary Beard

Daily Telegraph today refers to A Rayner’s property “empire”. Whatever you think of her housing arrangements, I don’t think constituency house (bought for 375k in 2016), house in Hove, plus use of ministerial flat in London is an “empire”. Duke of Westminster wont fear a rival!

OP posts:
cardibach · 24/08/2025 09:21

It is a bit misleading to quote her grace and favour apartment as though it’s hers.

Notonthestairs · 24/08/2025 09:22

It’s not a bit misleading. It’s just misleading.

cardibach · 24/08/2025 09:24

Well quite. One might almost say it’s a deliberate lie designed to rile up people without understanding of what a ‘Grace and favour’ apartment is.

placemats · 24/08/2025 09:25

Was about to post that @DuncinToffee

"Property empire". 🙄

cardibach · 24/08/2025 09:29

I’d reserve ‘property empire’ for someone with multiple properties who is taking a profit from them in rents, not someone having a little place by the sea for their own use…
I tend to think second homes shouldn’t be allowed but it seems unfair to ban those while allowing actual property empires (which we need for rental accommodation since we have no council housing to speak of any more). The whole housing situation needs a total reset, and I’m pretty sure this one flat isn’t making things intolerable. As long as she follows the rules about council tax, nobody needs to ‘defend’ her. Also wondering why it’s been demanded that we defend her, given not everyone on here is a current (or past) Labour supporter…

DuncinToffee · 24/08/2025 09:31

The MP for Clacton will miss the opening of Parliament for a US speaking gig to champion LC's story.

OP posts:
cardibach · 24/08/2025 09:31

He’s elsewhere more often than in Parliament. Has he been to Clacton yet?

BIossomtoes · 24/08/2025 09:38

Of course he has, silly. Don’t you remember him being christened with a milkshake there? He concluded that made it too dangerous to hold constituency surgeries.

cardibach · 24/08/2025 09:38

Of course. Silly me. He’s positively industrious in his constituency work.

Are you referring to me?

Notonthestairs · 24/08/2025 09:40

Govey introduced tax changes for second homes. I presume the Telegraph was similarly concerned with Tory ministers with property “empires” of 2 houses.

Of course Farage is looking forward to slagging off the country to a foreign power.
I don’t suppose incitement to racial hatred carries much weight in the US.

Gandersash · 24/08/2025 09:39

I don’t think so. I don’t really recall and I’m not scrolling back. Someone presented the info that AR had a flat and demanded we ‘defend the indefensible’. Seems odd to expect a diverse group to do that.

He’ll probably get elected president for the next term 😉
