What we need is more affordable and council housing.

Absolutely. Thatcher’s move to allow council houses to be bought/sold was a horrific thing to do.

Also Brexit has made raw materials very expensive so schemes are not viable, that cost can't be passed on to the buyers.

TheNewGaard · 24/08/2025 12:02

The thing is, people buying £800000 second homes in Hove Actually aren't depriving impoverished locals of a home, that's way out of their budget.

If it was sold at a massive discount to an impoverished local, what would they do? Sell it on at a massive profit.

What we need is more affordable and council housing.

Not only that but Rayner will have paid a higher rate of stamp duty and double council tax on an ongoing basis.

Goldenbear · 24/08/2025 12:40

For a laugh I read the DM piece about AR and her Hove place- the red and yellow flags on the beach near her flat, were perhaps a sign of a socialist beach or actually just Lifeguard flags😂. Equally, she lives nowhere near Fatboy Slim and I think his place may be worth a few quid more!

Goldenbear · 24/08/2025 12:45

I am not keen on second home ownership but I was discussing this with DH who is an Architect this morning and he was saying that it's number 5ish on list of problems that are causing the housing crisis and I have to say I'm pretty convinced by his arguments now.

Goldenbear · 24/08/2025 12:46

Also, would rather Labour in power even with second homes than the horrifying alternative.

TheNewGaard · 24/08/2025 12:48

^Ethics and morality evidently have no place in this Labour government, despite Starmer campaigning on such a ticket.^

Because the previous government was such a shining beacon of ethics and morality...

Goldenbear · 24/08/2025 12:50

Lastly,😂, Fatboy Slim is community minded, I think he personally donated his money for one of the playgrounds in Hove.

Exactly!

Who brought about Brexit and fucked up the economy for pretty much everyone!

PickAChew · 24/08/2025 12:58

Ethics and morality didn't seem so important for the 14 years up until last summer.

Notonthestairs · 24/08/2025 12:59

Farage does seem to spend an awful lot of time in the US.

I loathe politicians using safe access zones around abortion centres as a political football.

“Farage was quoted by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the abolitionist group whose pressure contributed to the overturning of Roe v Wade, describing UK abortion buffer zones as a “crackdown on free expression” which was “becoming very sinister”.

So much for the obviously faux protection of women and girls @Notonthestairs

Notonthestairs · 24/08/2025 13:18

Quite.

It's not faux. It's the one thing he is sincere about.

You need (rich) white women to breed up the supreme white population, and you need poor white and non white women to do all the cooking and cleaning.

The trick is to get them all to agree with it. And you do that by harnessing the power of ignorance. Forget the A-Bomb, any country that has the Z-Bomb is a haven for grifters.

placemats · 24/08/2025 13:29

Well obviously @SerendipityJane I was referring to keeping women and girls free from harassment and abuse. Having had an abortion myself and having to go past the holy joes (Liverpool), I understand that their presence is extremely intimidating and meant to be.

Abortion doesn't suit the Great White Hope plan.

placemats · 24/08/2025 13:43

Rich women will always find a way to get an abortion. And IF the plan comes into place post 2029, then they will likely travel to the island of Ireland to access it. The irony.

PickAChew · 24/08/2025 12:58

In fact it was actively being encourages by those who now can’t accept their party lost the general election!

Notonthestairs · 24/08/2025 13:47

What other medical treatment inspires so much determined political interference?

Let women decide for themselves what is best for them.

I'm too lazy to entertain the idea of 'gathering' but I'd happily march on Westminster if they start messing about with safe access zones. Free speech my arse.

placemats · 24/08/2025 13:57

What is needed is to remove abortion rights in relation to the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. This has happened in Northern Ireland. So decriminalise abortion. MPs have already backed Tonia Antonazzi's NC One amendment, which should actually go through if the provision remains unamended by the Lords. Also apart from decriminalisation, al other aspects of the provisions remain unchanged.

Notonthestairs · 24/08/2025 14:39

The bill is at second reading. I think there is a committee stage after that.

PickAChew · 24/08/2025 14:46

Just been for a walk and discovered that the newly repainted mini roundabout at the end of our street has been vandalised.😖

Such an obvious, but weak, reposte.

Labour are in govt now - no need to relive the previous 14 years. Your lot came out with a flying start - with all the goodies they received.

What’s Rayners net worth? Almost 5 million quid? (I am asking).

Tbh, I bet lots of this bored youths out for a thrill.

Notonthestairs · 24/08/2025 14:57

Nothing more thrilling than painting a roundabout.

I suppose it gets them away from screens. maybe I should go out and paint something!
