Welcome, new posters! Grin

DuncinToffee · 23/08/2025 19:55

Why the need to name change, or is it another redirection from a different forum Hmm

TheNewGaard · 23/08/2025 19:56

I changed for the football thread, but forgot to change back for this one!

Saucery · 23/08/2025 19:57

Won’t be long before they’re slagging off our biscuit recipes @DuncinToffee , I’m sure of it Wink

Notonthestairs · 23/08/2025 19:58

The Stairs household are very pleased with the football. Not my team so I went for a very pleasant walk with the dog and listened to The Rest is History.

I changed for the football thread, but forgot to change back for this one!

And now you’re stuck like that, just like all the folk tales say Shock until the next thread

DuncinToffee · 23/08/2025 20:02

You are easy to recognise Gaard Grin

Truly split re the football. DH and DC are Gooners. I grew up in Leeds. Sad times.

BIossomtoes · 23/08/2025 20:35

This is a football free household. I’m always grateful we have more than one TV when the Six Nations is on.

God - I misread that post and thought you were talking about ‘grandad crime’. I thought that was a bit niche Grin

😂😂😂

They were a series by an author called Kimberley Chambers. I read one of hers by default and loved it so read both her series and then the final book combined both families.

Currently working my way through Freda McFadden

Have you read ‘The Fortune Men’ by Nadifa Mohamed @Piggywaspushed and @SerendipityJane ? It’s about Mahmood Mattan, who was basically executed for being Somalian…that was the only evidence against him and witnesses told the police it wasn’t him. There’s a BBC podcast on Sounds about it, called Mattan: Injustice of a Hanged Man.

Oohhh I love BBc sounds. Currently working my way through “Ganster” (started because they did one in John Plamer and I lived in Tenerife through his rein)

Im adding that to my list!

Found the one I was thinking of, 99 Homes

Never heard of it. But definitely one to source.

itsgettingweird · 23/08/2025 21:04

I missed the football.

was my birthday last Sunday and ds was 21 Tuesday just gone so went up to the New forest (my DB loves that way) and we’ve had a family meal out in a a lovely pub. Me and ds, my DSis and her DS and my DB and his wife and my dad.

Quite a number of flags flying around here from bridges. Personally I don’t have an issue with people
flying a country’s flag. I’ve worked and lived all over Europe and seen it. DS competes under out flag frequently and it’s always flown for athletes. What I have an issue is weaponising the flag against immigrants and asylum
seekers.

Me and my dad did have a giggle though about how thick these people are because they’ve clearly never studied the history of St George 🤦🏼‍♀️

I can confirm that Kirby Stephen is riddled with England flags. Tbf, just about every shop front has an existing flagpole but there were several new ones. We drive through fairly regularly and have never seen any flags so there you go, Kirby Stephen are making some sort of Point. I’d rather they sort out the worst toilets in the UK but hey.
Elsewhere on our journey up to the Borders…..one rather random St Andrew flag at least 25 miles from the border and the usual amount of Northumbria flags we see, which I sort of like. There’s no ‘edge’ to the Northumbrian flag, is there <awaits slew of comments about how someone once walked into a pub and everyone immediately switched to speaking Northumbrian >

The northumbrian flag reminds me of those tests at the optician's. Which colour is brighter...

This government has been handed a difficult situation, not helped by having an utter loon in the White House. In economic terms I think they should not have boxed themselves in fiscally prior to the election, but if they had said 'yes, we will have to raise income.e tax', or if they had rolled back the unaffordable NI cut brought in by the last lot, they would have struggled because Brits want Scandi level public services on a tax haven level of taxation, and they don't want to see that's impossible. I think their rapprochement with the EU will help some, but with geopolitics so unstable, there are things they can't do.

On the other hand they have done some excellent stuff that they don't brag about enough on workers' rights, closer ties with the EU, rape courts and the proposed restoration of SureStart in some form. Obviously right wingers don't like any of those things, and the press and media are predominantly hostile.

They've been in power a year after 14 years of destruction. I am inclined to give them a full Parliament before judging, and I think anyone who won't is at best terminally shortsighted.

There. A view.

This.

The only parties fighting for votes at this point is Tories (desperate) and reform (not a hope when the other parties start trying!)

The constant running down of Starmer, Raynor and Reeves is boring.

Six nations is Rugby Union and it's always Ireland and always tense and exciting. Watch every match behind several cushions.

I was brought up with t'other rugby. Rugby union has too many people on the pitch and just seems... messy.

Angela Rayner has been criticised for having “three pads” after it emerged on Saturday night that she had added an £800,000 seaside apartment to her property empire.

The Deputy Prime Minister has bought a new “holiday home” in Hove to add to her three-bedroom grace-and-favour flat at Admiralty House, in central London, and a £650,000 constituency home near Manchester.

It comes at a time when she is looking to impose an extra 100 per cent council tax charge on second homes, leading to the Conservatives to call on her to “come clean” about her council tax situation.

The levy is being imposed as people living in popular holiday spots, including Hove, are unable to afford homes where they were brought up due to the number of people buying second homes.

Defend the indefensible….
