Most romantic film you can think of?

I’m in the mood for some true romance. Can anyone suggest something good? The ones I can think of off the top of my head are:

The Notebook
Cinema Paradiso
Atonement
Wuthering Heights (Ralph Fiennes)
Gone With The Wind
Dracula

Honourable mention to Amelie 💜

The beginning sequence of Up. Gets me every time.
Purple Hearts 💜. A bit corny but I'll watch it on repeat.
Set It Up. The pizza scene. Creepy Tim 🤣
Sleepless in Seattle.

Strictly Ballroom

Tim (with Piper Laurie & a very young Mel Gibson)

I was going to say the same thing, absolutely loved North & South with Richard Armitage

lobeydosser · 20/08/2025 01:56

Loving the love for Moonstruck🌙💘
Don't particularly like either Cher or Nicholas Cage but there's real chemistry between them.
It's as much a love letter to Manhattan as the Woody Allen film of the same name. The cityscapes - well before 9/11 - are beautifully beguiling.
It encompasses all different kinds of love - passionate; making do; adulterous; late middle aged; family.
Really one of my favourite movies. And as someone else said, you can't go wrong with La Boheme on the soundtrack!

Has no-one mentioned Casablanca yet? It's on i-player. Still so good even if you know all the words😀

Dr. Zhivago

@kerstinafunnily enough I read The Thorn Birds two weeks ago for the first time ever, can’t find the show anywhere to watch though Sad

You can buy it on Amazon or Apple (the Just Watch app is great for finding out where you can watch things).

What did you decide on OP?

Nobody has mentioned Bridget Jones Diary yet but the relationship between Bridget and Darcy is just so dreamy.

Tim is a lovely film (and is my Pointless tv show answer regarding Mel Gibson ).

I was just about to say Untamed Heart, I love it but it makes me ugly cry. I have a copy of the DVD that Christian Slater signed for me when I met him😍 Not enough people I know have seen that film, its fantastic!

I love the easy watch romantic films, I try not to read too much into them, just nice to watch:

Notting Hill
Dirty Dancing
Love Actually
Ghost

The best ones are the ones that make me cry!

Can't believe you met Christian Slater! Looks like Untamed Heart is on Amazon Prime - might have to watch it. Though I'll need to get the tissues ready!

Goatalone · 20/08/2025 11:24

Somewhere in Time.

I cry buckets every time I watch it.

larkstar · 20/08/2025 12:31

FYI - so far I think we have:
The Bridges of Madison County (3)
The English Patient (3)
Notting Hill (2)
Doctor Zhivago (2)
and 1 vote each for the rest.

It's not the eclectic collection I was hoping to see - all very big box office/mainstream.

I'd give my second vote to Il Postino.

elQuintoConyo · 20/08/2025 12:53

Reese Witherspoon films: The Man in the Moon (1991) and Pleasantville.

Christopher Reeve's Somewhere In Time (1980) had me balling for days!

Breaking the Waves - more snotty crying.

Last of the Mohicans. Oh, DD-L!!

Yanks (little known Richard Gere film).

A Room With A View.

The Purple Rose of Cairo - Mia Farrow + Jeff Daniels, super sad but beautiful.

Crazy Stupid Love for me

ghostyslovesheets · 20/08/2025 13:49

Also The Colour Purple - the love between the women in that film is beautiful

MoonWoman69 · 20/08/2025 19:27

For me it's got to be Brief Encounter! I adore that film and always cry!

He was starring in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in the West End, met him 4 times at various west end shows, I am his stalker 😂
