Most romantic film you can think of?

I’m in the mood for some true romance. Can anyone suggest something good? The ones I can think of off the top of my head are:

The Notebook
Cinema Paradiso
Atonement
Wuthering Heights (Ralph Fiennes)
Gone With The Wind
Dracula

Honourable mention to Amelie 💜

Falling In Love (a little known film starring Meryl Streep and Robert de Niro)

Brief Encounter.

Omg yes I love the movie “falling in love”. Also agree with other poster “bridges of madison county”. Such a beautiful, subtle story.

Not a film but the dramatisation of North and South with Richard Armitage

Amazing, loved every minute of this and seen it so many times.
Plus I also love the lake house with keanu reeves

Mumteedum · 19/08/2025 21:13

Carol is a lovely film too.

And though I haven't seen it for a long time, I remember a lovely film with Pierce Brosnan which is on prime called Love is All You Need.

Witness. The chemistry between the two leads is amazing.

I love this film and also completely agree about North and South.

I'm kind of confusing 'romance' films with 'romantic', but these move me...

Cyrano de Bergerac
Dangerous Liaisons
The Princess Bride
Stardust
Manon des Sources
Most Merchant Ivory (!)
While You Were Sleeping
Far From the Madding Crowd

I’m so going to have to watch ‘Out of Africa’ . Probably haven’t watched it in thirty years!

MotherFlumper · 19/08/2025 21:37

Terms of Endearment. I know it’s not strictly speaking a romance but I love the relationship and chemistry between Jack Nicholson and Shirley MacLaine in that film.

Arlanymor · 19/08/2025 21:38

Far From The Madding Crowd - hands down. And Terrence Stamp died this week, so will feel extra poignant.

I agree with Amelie too - gorgeous film. But the original Wuthering Heights with Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier is so much better than the Juliet Binoche and Ralph Fiennes one… and Ralph Fiennes is my favourite actor, but this is not a good film for him. The original is just more passionate, to my mind at least.

And if you want a left-field suggestion, Lars and The Real Girl with Ryan Gosling, strips back what romance actually is.

Joiedepotato · 19/08/2025 21:41

Another vote for Love, Rosie. I have watched it a million times, like a warm duvet on a cold night, just so comforting.

I’ve just remembered La La Land. I know lots hated it but I loved it and I thought Ryan Gosling was amazing.

God, I couln't disagree more, Ralph Fiennes is is light years ahead of Olivier as Heathcliffe. I love Olivier but he is far too straight laced to be Heathcliffe. Darcy was great for him. And the Fiennes version is the whole story beyond Heathcliffe and Cathy. Ralph was how I imagined Heathcliffe to be, more tormented and threatening. There is no comparison.

Agree to disagree…I thought Fiennes was starchy and that accent was appalling. Olivier’s acting in the bedroom scene was astonishingly good, it made me cry. Fiennes nearly made me cry too… with his accent.

I was just about to say Untamed Heart, I love it but it makes me ugly cry. I have a copy of the DVD that Christian Slater signed for me when I met him😍 Not enough people I know have seen that film, its fantastic!

I love the easy watch romantic films, I try not to read too much into them, just nice to watch:

Notting Hill
Dirty Dancing
Love Actually
Ghost

The best ones are the ones that make me cry!

The 2015 version of Far from the Madding Crowd.
I want Michael Sheen to sing to me, buy me lots of presents and offer me his farm.
And who doesn’t want Matthias Schoenaerts to look at you like Gabriel Oak looks at Bathsheba?

I came here to say this, I love that film! Beautiful costumes and music too.

Also love the English Patient, the BBC Sense and Sensibility with David Morrissey, and the Jane Eyre with Ruth Wilson / Toby Stephens
