I’m in the mood for some true romance. Can anyone suggest something good? The ones I can think of off the top of my head are:

The Notebook
Cinema Paradiso
Atonement
Wuthering Heights (Ralph Fiennes)
Gone With The Wind
Dracula

Honourable mention to Amelie 💜

Cousins, Ted Danson and Isabella Rosselini
Some Kind Of Wonderful. Eric Stoltz and Mary Stuart Masterson

Love Somewhere in Time - Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour had a wonderful onscreen chemistry.

The English Patient

And of course Bridges of Madison County!

Titanic.

I liked Miss Potter with Renee Z and Ewan McGregor —a very restrained Victorian romance

The lake house - just lovely

Brief Encounter

I appreciate Some Kind of Wonderful isn’t the most romantic but it holds a special place in my heart because my best friend and I were similar at that age and finally got together age 21.
I realised reading this thread that I haven’t seen most of these films. I’d offer The Sound of Music as an all time favourite film that’s romantic.

Casablanca. Bogart and Bergman. The film that has everything.

Oh it does - I thought, for the time, having the love story between Rick and the wife of a war hero was brave - ‘we’ll always have Paris’ 😭

"Brokeback Mountain. But not for the poor wife."

Both wives. Jack's wife knew. The scene on the phone to Ennis is a brilliant piece of acting by Anne Hathaway. She and Michelle Williams were the best actors in the film.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Came here to say this. You cannot get more romantic than Breakfast at Tiffany's

Also, my absolute favourite: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

They were great actors. Completely agree.

I need to watch BBM again soon, it’s been a few years …

The Horseman on the Roof (or Le Hussar sur le Toit!). Juliette Binoche and Olivier Martinez are both gorgeous, with chemistry building up through the storyline. The cinematography is stunning, and there is swashbuckling action. I love this film.

XelaM · 22/08/2025 23:51

I absolutely hated Brokeback Mountain after all the hype about it. What's so special about it?

XelaM · 22/08/2025 23:54

Actually the most beautiful and tragically romantic film I have ever seen is the Italian film The Postman about the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. It's truly haunting, but very sad.

moonisblue · 23/08/2025 00:03

Falling in Love with Meryl Streep and Robert DeNiro.

Being French, I can't watch the Marseillaise scene without crying.

Not a film but the San Junipero episode of Black Mirror is superb.

kerstina · 23/08/2025 13:32

Agree about Brokeback mountain not living up to the hype. I felt the same way about the Notebook.

I think it’s a pretty long and boring movie in terms of plot but the love story and the way it was conveyed was really special. You could totally sense their passion and longing for each other.

“I wish I knew how to quit you” always makes me choke up.
