Constipation- someone PLEASE help me

HelpMeMelpHe · 14/08/2025 20:12

I have been constipated for 7 days. That may not sound like a lot but I usually go 2/3 times a day without issue. I was away on holiday and ate crap food and basically survived on crisps and pizza as I was so hot I had no appetite.

I am currently lying on the bed in tears, I have tried:
orange juice
4 suppositories
3 x enemas
putting my feet up
relaxing
black coffee
a special vitamin tablet which DP says always makes him go
Drinking loads of water
pushing from inside my vagina
actually trying to manually remove the stool (sorry for the way TMI)
sitting in a warm bath
massaging my stomach
dulcolex

ill be ringing my GP first thing in the morning but can ANYONE suggest anything else. I’m in a total panic, I can just feel the rock hard stool, I’m in agony, shaking and it hurts to walk. To top it off I’m on my period which I hoped would get things going but nothing. Someone please help I am desperate and I’m worried my gp will just prescribe everything I’ve already tried. I’m a nurse and working all weekend and at this point I can’t see how I can go into work which would leave my team in the absolute shit (pardon the pun). I don’t know what to do 🫨🫨

Can of inches cider and a roll up

Peaceisenough · 14/08/2025 23:25

It’s a really bad idea to keep eating when there’s a possible impaction.

OpalFruitsYay · 14/08/2025 20:51

Lots of water and magnesium citrate

I’m also a nurse and nothing got me going like Magnesium Citrate but I’m little worried that you’re actually feeling unwell now too and I think you need to try to relax and let it happen. You’re probably now terrified that it will hurt. Do you have anything to relax you like diazepam? I’d sit in a warm bath and try to get super relaxed? And then on the loo with your feet up on a stool. You’ve definitely taken everything you can to help I think. If this doesn’t work and you feel more unwell, GP in the morning definitely. And any of the symptoms below, A&E!

Physio told me after a cesarean to sit on the toilet and blow like you are blowing candles out and it will push out naturally. It works xx

It won’t if it’s this far gone. The impaction has to manually helped.

Thanks for the sympathy everyone. If I rung in sick it would truly cause holy hell, I’m the only nurse on (there should be 5) for the whole weekend so already unsafe and if I rung in sick… but not sure what else I can do, I can’t even straighten up properly 😭

But you are sick. Your employers are just going to have to go to an agency or something.

Rainallnight · 14/08/2025 23:28

OP, if you’re still like this in the morning, I think you should go to A&E.

In the meantime, drink lots and lots of water along with the Laxido.

FioFioSILK · 14/08/2025 23:29

Senokot pods are great. Takes a couple of hours. Dark chocolate also really good 85% eat as much as you can. Periods can flow things up. Warm or hot water sip it. Should move it.

HonoriaBulstrode · 14/08/2025 23:29

Try taking those Werther's no sugar sweets with sorbital.

Anything with sorbitol in will normally get things moving. Packet of sugar free mints, if you eat too many too quickly, will have you trotting to the loo.

OP may need professional help, however.

Cantsleepwontsleepeveragain · 14/08/2025 23:33

Sounds gross, but when I got in that state on new medication I got in a warm bath and managed to squeeze it out in there.

30Days1 · 14/08/2025 23:39

Vaseline from the tub all over your bum, coffee or pure orange and just ride it out on the toilet. This worked for me when I’d not been for 10 days and couldn’t bare to stick my fingers up there.

Having said that I did have to take a pack of B&H up with me and smoke on the toilet
Hope you manage a shit soon OP, constipation is vile

Wistfullysleepy · 14/08/2025 23:40

People are fucking insane on here. If op is real and she’s tried actual laxatives and suppositories and enemas….then some bloody sugar free werthers originals and a glass of Malibu aren’t going to help. At this time of night on MN, I’m reminded about a scary but very real subset of normal people.

YellowGuido · 14/08/2025 23:41

Not read the whole thread so apologies if repeating anything - but advice I’ve been given the past that have actually helped - brown sugar dissolved in warm water & drink. Apple juice / apple sauce. Sugar free sweets such as Haribo / Lidl gummy bears. Hot bath. Drink lots of water. Walk / squat combo…
Sending best wishes, OP - it’s miserable x

I’ve just googled and looked on the NHS website and the closest late night pharmacy that’s still open is 25.1 miles away 😭 all the others in my city closed at 9

25.1 miles is nothing when you're that ill and need it. I'd literally drive close to 100 miles if I had to, whatever it took. The relief will be worth any length of travel.

I'd go to A&E, it sounds very serious. Even if you have to wait 6 or more hours. Please take this seriously. The relief will be worth it.

Nurses are human and get sick, the shift manager should be prepared for that, it's literally their job. It's not your responsibility to be a martyr. You need to look after yourself.

OpalFruitslover · 14/08/2025 23:43

Hi
Picolax is probably your best bet op. Sorry you’re feeling crap. X

LeftieRightsHoarder · 14/08/2025 23:47

If it happens again, I would drink mugfuls of plain hot water (not even a herbal tea bag in it), as hot as you can swallow without pain. It works wonders. Sounds as if you need something stronger at this stage, so I really hope good old Mum can bring what you need.

Sending lots of sympathy, as a bad bout of constipation was one of the most painful and distressing things that ever happened to me xx

Mummylovesmonkeys · 14/08/2025 23:52

I had a colonoscopy on Monday - this cleared me out 110% completely. Don't know if you can get it over the counter, but if you could perhaps get some or all of the ingredients:

People are very weird about constipation - they don’t get how serious it can be and refuse to accept it can just go way beyond prunes or whatever.

GlomOfNit · 14/08/2025 23:55

OP, there's nothing I can suggest that you haven't already tried, or that others haven't already mentioned. I think Califig syrup is great, but it sounds almost like you're beyond that now if you have a rock-hard blockage - nothing you ingest is surely going to shift that. It has to be removed manually. If I were you I'd be ringing in sick, but definitely getting medical help. In the meantime, squatting on the loo or bringing your knees up so they're way above your pelvis really helps as it relaxes a loop of muscle that tightens around your rectum (ok, I've watched that Squatty Potty ad too many times!), and I'd try massaging your perineum, putting a very warm flannel there, and maybe trying to work some vaseline up your bum somehow.

Astressie · 14/08/2025 23:56

If not already suggested I really do think you should ring 111. My daughter had this and they got her an out of hours telephone doctor's appointment who gave her a prescription for a laxative that worked in a few hours. She had a spicy Thai meal tbat I also think helped. They can also advise whether to go to A&E who i know are able to intervene and help things along. I know how frightening this is. Speaking to a doctor is reassuring and can help. xxxx

MsStyles · 14/08/2025 23:58

You need lactulose asap and a high dose. It’s the only thing that I’ve found that treats impacted stools. Everything else helps the bowel contract but that’s not the problem, it’s that the faeces is too hard to pass naturally. Lactulose will soften it to be able to pass it. If you take things like Movicol etc when you actually have impacted faeces, it will cause the faeces after the impacted faeces, to be like liquid and run down any gaps so you could end up with impacted stools as well as diarrhoea straight after.

good luck. It’s horrible. My child used to suffer terribly.

DiscoBob · 15/08/2025 00:05

Docusate, aka dulcoease? That helps me.

MrBeanMustBeMyDad · 15/08/2025 00:08

If you've got plastic gloves, glycerin suppository, then manually remove, repeat. Repeat, repeat along with the sachets your mum's bringing. It'll be little by little, and it's likely to take a few hours, but it will ease a little!
You can take its either 8 or 12 at a time (I needed the max amount about 4 years ago, kept getting stupidly constipated, then tearing when I could go!)
Speak with your GP, they'll give you the sachets and the liquid- I can't remember the name of the liquid now.
But I also reccommend maybe a huge pad, or some inconvenience pants because it can kick in with 0 notice. Happened on the school run to me, and I was stuck at the crossing shitting myself in my carvas pretty much every child year 7-13 crossed!

But that should help avoid you getting in this state again. I hope this passes soon

butterfly0404 · 15/08/2025 00:09

Milk of Magnesia, get mine on Amazon. Take 60ml and you will definitely move, combine it with a litre of prune juice and you won't leave the toilet for 3 days.

Slow transit constipation sufferer here, im on 8 sachets of laxido a day, use a prescribex anal irrigation system but I still get impacted and only MoM and Prune juice will work.

QuickScroller · 15/08/2025 00:12

I’ve been in your position before and it’s agony. The only thing that helped was literally taking about 8 sachets of laxido & a full cartoon of prune juice
