Anyone around... scared

I'm home alone with my 12 year old twins as my husband is working away and not due back until tomorrow evening. He's about 6 hours away.

Over the last few days I've had a painful boil under my boob. I saw the GP today as it doubled in size overnight. There is a red circle around it. She prescribed doxycycline (2 a day) and said to phone back if it gets worse.

I've been getting more and more unwell. My left arm has started tingling, I'm sweating with cold hands and feet, the pain is indescribable and I'm exhausted. I slept for 6 hours this afternoon and I'm still utterly exhausted and all my joints hurt.

I've had to phone my father in law who is an hour away to come through to sit with the twins. I'm on hold to 111 but a 45 minute wait to call answer as a minimum they said.

I'm not sure whether just to call a taxi when FIL gets here to go straight to accident and emergency.

I'm a little freaked out at how unwell I feel.

How's it going, OP? I hope you're nearly drained!

PerhapsaSillyQuestion · 11/08/2025 14:51

OP after your DH initial poor response what a wonderful family you have !! So thoughtful and sweet.😍😍

It's still going.

Seriously how much more can there be 😄

Good job they gave me a whole box of dressings.

I have the breast clinic tomorrow at 9am for a check. There's still quite a sizeable lump sadly so likely more drainage to come.

Blimey, you're like one of those geysers! I hope the pain is less and the clinic goes well tomorrow. Such a good thing you went in though, and I hope the family are still being ace.

Silvers11 · 11/08/2025 15:25

Wow!! Just as well you went in when you did. Sorry it is still giving out gunk, but you must be feeling a lot better with so much of it out and not inside you!! Hope your family are still making a fuss of you

AnotherNewName456 · 11/08/2025 16:45

Blimey, still going 😬. At least you have the full tub of dressings (think they knew what to expect??) and have an appointment tomorrow. Hope it goes well.

justasking111 · 11/08/2025 17:05

Good luck with tomorrow's appointment. You've really been through the mill

WearyAuldWumman · 11/08/2025 17:20

I'm so pleased that other Mumsnetters persuaded you to take action, OP.

AllotmentTime · 11/08/2025 18:49

Hope you are feeling better OP. Drink lots of water!! Fingers crossed for you turning the corner soon and the draining can end and the healing begin. Flowers

tinyspiny · 11/08/2025 19:57

Good luck with the breast clinic tomorrow @DarkSuitsSadSongs

limescale · 12/08/2025 07:53

Glad you’re home OP.
Have they said what caused this abcess?

anyolddinosaur · 12/08/2025 09:12

Hope there is less pain and that the clinic goes well.

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 12/08/2025 10:21

Holy cow!!!

It's a small hole so the Dr wanted to make it bigger. He injected some awful brown antiseptic stuff into the hole and Holy cow the pain 😢 it felt like my flesh was burning. DH heard my screaming from the waiting room.

Then he injected the local antiseptic for the incision and guess who is now suddenly allergic to lidocaine?!

So it's been a disaster. And I would not suit lip filler

Bloody Hell @DarkSuitsSadSongs that sounds awful. Also aren’t they supposed to gifenthe anaesthetic first? 😳

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 12/08/2025 10:29

Oh you poor thing.
I'm really sorry it caused you so much pain today.

It's normally not needed for a simple cleaning apparently.

No boobs no opinion really haha 😆

Doctors always seem to think that things aren't going to hurt.

You'd think they'd just anaesthetise patients anyway.

itsgettingweird · 12/08/2025 10:42

Oowwwwwcccchhhhhh.

as well as anal and groin abscesses mentioned above I’ve had them behind my ears.

One dr at an and r once said the anaesthetic injection would hurt as much as the needle to aspirate and so my choice if I had it or not. (Idea being the injection would hurt anyway)

I opted for aspiration only.

I’ll never get over my stupidity 😂😂 (cysts was eventually removed a few years later)

The only advice I can give is long breath out for anything that may hurt as it relaxes you. (Easier said than done)

CurtsyFriends · 12/08/2025 10:48

Eek this seems never ending for you 😞

I saw a reel of a cow who had what seemed like a similar abscess yesterday on a reel on FB from the Hoof GP and thought the poor thing must have been in so much pain like you!

Not that I’m comparing you to a cow, it was just the massive abscess that was similar…..

whatwasthatnoise · 12/08/2025 10:48

Oh that made me wince!
Has your trip to clinic made the abscess better, or worse (other than the allergic reaction)? You can't seem to catch a break with this, you poor thing.

FurForksSake · 12/08/2025 11:08

Well you need a big bowl of ice cream after that experience!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/08/2025 11:29

Blimey. Is gin allowed with your AB’s? I think I’d need a stiff one after that.

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 12/08/2025 11:46

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/08/2025 11:29

No because I'm on metronidazole (alongside doxycycline) so can't even have that pleasure.

I'm still waiting to see if the consultant wants to take me back into theatre under a general to make the hole bigger and drain more because the registrar is concerned that since its still a very small hole that it will drain over weeks and just prolongs the risk of further infection/spreading.

I did heat the nurse say to him that betadine is absolutely brutal on open wounds. He did look appalled that he had caused me so much pain but in his slight defence if he had put the local in first then it wouldn't have got cleaned because I'm allergic so they would have to stop to deal with that.

OP posts:
ickky · 12/08/2025 12:14

You poor thing, it sounds so painful.

Lidocaine doesn't work very well on infected tissue so it probably wouldn't have made much difference if they had done it first.

I saw you mentioned earlier in the thread that you had another abscess previously, could you have Hidradenitis suppurativa? It usually affects under boobs, armpits and groin.
