Badenoch wants Tory councils to go after asylum hotels

Of course she does, I wouldn’t expect anything else. So the plan is to remove asylum hotels from Reform and Tory strongholds, then the voters there won’t have the main “problem” that’s motivating them to be supporters of those two parties. Have I got that right? Isn’t that going to lose them votes?

DuncinToffee · 20/08/2025 22:14

How much will these legal challenges cost? A few potholes at least

OP posts:
LlttledrummergirI · 20/08/2025 22:30

How many of these hotels that tory council's are going to challenge, had the asylum seekers put in them by the tory government. Why weren't the councils being encouraged then to challenge the legalities around change of use etc? Hmm

The tory leadership may have the attention span of a gnat, with short memories, but the majority of the electorate do not.

Bet the journalists don't ask the right questions around this though.

cardibach · 20/08/2025 23:05

I’ve just got in from my choir tour. Lovely time but depressing to hear some attitudes from people I knew were Tories but thought were sensible. We came back via the Calais-Dover route and there were lots of ‘jokes’ about small boats, and how one of the choir should to that instead of a ferry because he’d get his operation more quickly, and other similar hilarities.
Then we were stopped at customs for them to search the bus for cigarettes (we tried explaining we were a choir so didn’t smoke - and I do think it’s a bit nuts to target coaches as there’s just no space to hide significant numbers). Then we had quips like ‘Ahmed doesn’t have to put up with this’ and another person saying he wished they’d take the same attitude with boats on beaches. I was thinking - me too, they’ve been very polite to us and we are waiting in a building with a toilet etc but he genuinely seemed to think that people claiming asylum were treated better.
I bit my tongue and walked away for community cohesion reasons, but it was so sad to hear people I get on with so clearly taken in by the lies.

Zonder · 20/08/2025 23:11

That just shows how much racism is normalised now @cardibach - awful.

Evenstar · 20/08/2025 23:12

That’s awful @cardibach ☹️ it really changes how you feel about people when you realise they think like that.

cardibach · 20/08/2025 23:13

It shocked me to be honest. The casual racism but also this chip on the shoulder that immigrants were getting the best of everything. Not just immigrants. Specifically asylum seekers.

Newcastle Council won't seek legal challenge over asylum seeker hotel

It's awful isn't it? I've got to know some lovely people at my Aqua Aerobics class, including a really nice man who's one of only a few males there. We were chatting at the end of class yesterday (we seldom talk about politics) and he made a casual remark along free iphones and benefits lines. He didn't know how little asylum seekers had to live on. He didn't know that they can't claim benefits. He didn't know that there aren't any safe legal routes. He didn't bluster. He was shocked and said "I never knew these things. I just went by what I've seen on the news".

It's sad and worrying.

Zonder · 21/08/2025 00:20

Well done for putting him straight @ilovesooty

Austerity was the biggest error this country has ever done, worse than Brexit, run down all services and the costs to put right are now unaffordable.

eg Save 1bn on road mcte, cost to make good - 11billion and rising.

Austerity was bad, but Brexit was a hundred times (in monetary terms and by the multiple) worse.

Brexit was a disaster for this country and the horrifying thing is that there was no capitalism from that.

Money can be made from austerity.

Alexandra2001 · 21/08/2025 07:17

Money from Austerity? not for most.

We can recover from Brexit, we will never have the funds to rebuild/recover from Austerity & neither will the people who have suffered and even died due to this policy.

Plus as pp said, it led to Brexit.

2 self inflicted disasters

Does Brazilian jiu jitsu involve hot wax or cold?

Don't know but I also thought it sounded painful 😂

I only know about the card as have met numerous asylum seekers as DS trains at the leisure centre as he swims for Portsmouth!

I agree. The destruction of public services that were created over decades and can never be replicated was more damaging than Brexit. At least the terms of leaving the EU can be renegotiated with willingness on both sides.

Saucery · 21/08/2025 09:12

Some people round here need to be careful what they wish for…..asylum seekers housed in a hotel for the last 3 years, not a scrap or hint of any trouble inside or out. Yet they are urging the Council to remove them all, not realising (or ignoring) the fact that those people will now be housed in communities. While using hotels isn’t a good thing, those asylum seekers will now face animosity and threats in smaller housing, all because of Reform rabble rousing.
You simply can’t get through to them that closing down hotels will not mean all the people in them will be “sent back home/to France/to Rwanda”. Ain’t going to happen, thickoes 🙄

Evenstar · 21/08/2025 09:13

Surely they could charge people painting on the roads with criminal damage? Why on earth can’t they do something to improve the appearance of their communities if they have all this time on their hands, like litter picking etc

I'm getting sick of hearing about all this nonsense. The flags, the unwelcoming and lack of compassion headlines, the rabble rousing of the mob mentality about immigrants. It's like Trump is doing in America - creating a faux enemy or problem and targeting a minority group. Racism has become mainstream it seems and it is very depressing.

Isn't that the sort of thing that causes problems in Belfast?

It’s exactly what Trump’s doing. This is straight out of his playbook.

I'm afraid you need to be prepared for next week he's back to spouting the same shite. Maybe with a slightly embarrassed look if you catch his eye.

Been there, done that got the T-Shirt.

Brings back horrible memories. There's no way I would want that in England.

DuncinToffee · 21/08/2025 09:59

I saw this pointed out

Unintended consequences. The Epping judgment could be relied upon to prevent the use of hotels/B&Bs for anyone who is homeless, not just asylum seekers, including families escaping domestic violence. Legitimate concerns indeed.
