If you walk at least 10k steps a day, are you slim?

Just curious really having seen all these “work out how many steps a day you need to lose weight”
I average 7k a day and thinking about increasing it to lose some weight (as well as cutting out snacks. I know weight loss comes mainly from food)

@BigSkies2022you make that sound really straightforward. Fab approach.

For context I am 5ft 2 and a 12 on top ( bigger boobs) and a 10-12 on the bottom. I recently challenged myself to walk 20k steps per day in July which I managed apart from 3 days.
I have a good diet, but do like a treat at the weekend and a few glasses of wine.
In the last month without changing my diet but doubling my walking I have lost nearly 3lb which I know isn't massive but I feel better in myself, I feel more toned and genuinely healthier and although I have no where near dropped a dress size, I feel better in the clothes I have.

I use walking as my exercise and average about 15k steps a day. I only lose weight when I change my diet though…I’m a size 12 but BMI classed as overweight!

When I walked 10 to 15k steps a day I was fat. You can’t out exercise a bad diet.

DorothyWainwright · 31/07/2025 08:43

Yes. But I do other exercise too.

SabbatWheel · 31/07/2025 08:44

You can’t outrun (walk) your fork!
Peri did for me, even though I can run half marathons and I ride my horse 3-4 times a week (and up the stables walking and being active).
I’m still a stone more than I should be and that stone is very difficult to shift.

Picklechicken · 31/07/2025 08:44

I walk a LOT - I also make sure most of my walking is fast (download the Active 10 app) but I’m still very fat. I think I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been cardio wise but I eat too much chocolate being honest and no amount of me pacing the streets will undo that.

Paaseitjes · 31/07/2025 08:46

I lose weight on mountain holidays when I'm doing 25-30k per day of serious uphill, but that won't help unless you change career to mountain guide

InsanityPolarity · 31/07/2025 08:58

Love the idea of 20k walks and long mountain walks! Wish there was a mountain near me.
I just can’t fit it in on normal weekdays. But I can obviously reduce my snacking (my downfall. Need more nutritionally dense meals I think)

I do about 10-15k. I’m a healthy weight: bmi 23. It means I can eat slightly more than if I didn’t. It really is about calories in and calories burnt. According to my very inaccurate app it burns about 300-400 calories. It enables me to eat chocolate every day without putting on weight. I think it definitely helps with maintaining weight on not a very high calorie diet, but I have to eat less if I want to lose weight.

FanofLeaves · 31/07/2025 09:01

No, and on work days I walk up to 25,000, with hills.

I'm afraid I ruin it by eating too much and drinking wine, though. I’m a 12-14 but unfortunately not very tall with a short torso, so weight does tend to show.

However, my legs look great. I can flex my calf muscles.

KateMiskin · 31/07/2025 09:01

I think your age makes a difference as well.

CVVFan · 31/07/2025 09:02

Nope! I’m athletic/muscular

Straightjacketsandroses · 31/07/2025 09:02

I do, but I don’t aim for it; I just seem to average about 15k most days. I also run once or twice a week (not including this in my step count), go to the gym once or twice a week and play tennis. I don’t snack. I’m 5 ft 6 and weigh about 9 stone so around a size 8-10

KateMiskin · 31/07/2025 09:03

I do have great legs but then all dresses these days are midi!

Venalopolos · 31/07/2025 09:03

I think there’s something in it about doing more though. I’m not fat, but wanted to lose some excess pounds I’d put on and have done it pretty easily by increasing steps from an average of 5k to an average of 10k. Moving more than normal has been helpful, but I had a low ish base line.

Aren’t they just!! Give me a knee length fit and flare please 🙏🏻

itsgettingweird · 31/07/2025 09:04

It certainly won’t harm you to add another 3000 steps. However I also think that isn’t as far as you’d think!

todays I’ve done 6100 steps which was a 4k walk and then just pottering. That’s 52 minutes exercise and I’ve burned 340 active calories.

half that and it’s not even 2 decent biscuits 🫣🤯

Lazydaze123 · 31/07/2025 09:04

I walk between 7-10k steps a day, some days more some days less. Size 8. The only time I put on weight is when I over eat. Walking makes very little difference to my size personally from my experience.

Cinaferna · 31/07/2025 09:04

DeirdreChambersWhatACoincidence · 31/07/2025 08:17

Nope. I walk ten miles+ a day when I'm at work and at least 10,000 steps when it's the holidays. I'm fat Grin

This amazes me. You walk 10 miles a day but you are actually fat? As in over top end BMI? Or 'fat' as in half a stone heavier than your ideal weight in your dreams but well within healthy BMI?

People say it's all down to diet but when I upped exercise, I lost a stone without trying, and didn't change my diet at all. DH lost about 8lbs over a few months just by walking to the shops instead of taking the car every day. So it might depend on the body type.

itsgettingweird · 31/07/2025 09:04

Oh - and I’m also fat!

lljkk · 31/07/2025 09:06

15k steps avg.day plus I do other exercise.
BMI is about 20 which probably = "slim"
You can't eat when you're walking.

herbalteabag · 31/07/2025 09:07

I think it probably depends on how intense your walking is. I average just under 8000 although the days I work I often do 15K. Brisk walking is supposed to be the best, but mine is mostly just ambling about. Since I increased my steps because of my job, I have lost about half a stone, but that hasn't continued.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 31/07/2025 09:07

Diet will make you lose more weight than exercise. Exercise/weights will help tone you up. You need to do serious amounts to lose weight by exercise alone. What exercise does do is help change your mindset. You'll find yourself instinctively picking a healthy snack over a sugar laden snack, a glass of water over a can of coke.

I remember when i first started getting serious at the gym, I once said to my Dad it was either going to the gym for an hour or sitting on the sofa for an hour eating jaffa cakes. So I picked the gym, came back, and didn't fancy those jaffa cakes, after working out for an hour it seemed counterintuitive to stuff my face with biscuits.

(Now all I need is that girl back to kick me into gear )

Sebora · 31/07/2025 09:08

I average around 10-12k a day running around after two toddlers. I’m a size 20. My diet is the culprit!
