If you walk at least 10k steps a day, are you slim?

Just curious really having seen all these “work out how many steps a day you need to lose weight”
I average 7k a day and thinking about increasing it to lose some weight (as well as cutting out snacks. I know weight loss comes mainly from food)

I walk anywhere between 15k and 30k steps depending on the day and I’m not slim, I’m a size 12-14 and have many wobbly bits.

Catsandcannedbeans · 31/07/2025 09:56

Right now I’m pregnant so I’m so fat I’ve got my own gravitational pull, but normally I am decently slim for someone who’s had two children. Before this pregnancy I was a size 8 - I walked, ran, and did the gym two to three times a week. I don’t think I’ll be back to a size 8 after, I will be happy with a 10. If I could get down to an 8 I would be happy but I’m not going to put myself out trying.

DH said I can have a PT if I want once I’ve been okayed by a dr and I think I’m going to take him up on that. I don’t think the 10k steps makes that much difference physique wise - I’m skinny because I eat well 80% of the time, I run and do weights, and because I’m from a skinny family. The 10k steps makes me feel good mentally though. I was overweight in my teens, but it took a lot to get that fat. I was very depressed and was eating everything in my path. I lost it pretty easily and I know that’s not the case for a lot of people, so I think genetics play a massive role.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 31/07/2025 09:56

No. I walk well over 10k steps between work and being at home. Still fat despite walking, regular running, rowing, badminton, netball, dance and spin classes, swimming, weight/strength training and yoga. That’s just to maintain my current weight.

It's not, and yet I am shocked by how often I don't reach 10k steps. Working from home can reduce steps to about 1-3k a day unless I make time to go for a walk, and even that only adds 5-6k steps to the daily count.

Same here, wfh has been my downfall. I go into the office once a week and easily get to 12K steps without even thinking about it.

When I wfh the thought of "going for a walk" is boring now unless I've got a great podcast.

CherryAlmondLattice · 31/07/2025 10:09

10-12k most days and still plump. Quite fit though.

Dozycuntlaters · 31/07/2025 10:10

I walk minimum of 10k steps a day. I have done this for years, I was fat. I am now slim but nothing to do with the walking, its to do with what I shovel in my gob. Walking however, alongside that definitely helps.

Ansjovis · 31/07/2025 10:20

You had it right in your OP - weight loss comes from food. Reasoning: if I walk 10,000 steps I burn roughly 200 calories. It will take me about an hour to walk the steps but it will also take mere seconds for me to consume 200 calories worth of food. Moving more is great for your physical and mental health, which can make it easier for you to make good food choices but without those good choices it won't help you lose weight.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 31/07/2025 10:23

The last two months I've made an effort to do 10k rather than 7k and its kept me in my jeans and 2 kilos less. Need to eat fairly well as well though. It has made a difference but my feet are sore in a morning for the first few mins.

BitOutOfPractice · 31/07/2025 10:24

I am always shocked when I check how few calories are burned by exercise. I have to do so much to burn off one item of high-cal food! However, I do feel the benefits of walking a lot more as I get older, it makes me feel so much better, physically and mentally.

God this! It’s really really hard work to burn 100 calories. That’s less than a two finger Kit Kat.

I average 8000 a day. I’m a bit overweight.

henlake7 · 31/07/2025 10:27

I probably walk about 8-10k steps a day and am a size 8/10.
However I used to walk alot more when I was younger and back then was a size 20!
Its really all about the diet isnt it? Exercise is important but more for general health then weight loss.

boredwithfoodprob · 31/07/2025 10:32

I do between 8 and 15k steps per day - that includes a run (slow) twice a week. I also do a yoga class, a circuits class and I try and swim some weeks when I have time.

Eating wise I try to eat 30 plant foods each week but I also have a fair bit of chocolate and the odd treat, chips once a week etc, use full fat butter.

I’m slim but definitely not thin. I’m a size 12 and hover around 72 kg. I’d like to be a bit slimmer but not that bothered.

BakingMuffins · 31/07/2025 10:34

Yes I go between 7st 2 and 8stone but I don’t eat shit.

You can’t exercise a bad diet you’ll still be fat if you eat the wrong food or too much of it.

Whitehorses67 · 31/07/2025 10:40

Pre disability I did around 15k steps daily looking after my horses and was fat.
A letter from a medic (which I only saw many years later when viewing my file) described me as “unconditioned”.
I laughed to myself thinking about how I would stack 100 bales of hay on my own at the time and carry 20kg sacks of feed on top of poo picking 20 acres daily and all the other physical work that horses bring.
The medic hadn’t actually tested my fitness at all, or asked me about my lifestyle, just judged me on being fat.

There goes my easy win hopes 😀

yeah, sorry. I remember being so shocked when I found out how few calories any form of normal exercise actually uses 😫.

One of my close friends is significantly overweight - just gone onto WLIs and has been very disciplined for years in getting up to 10,000 steps a day. Her issue is food not exercise. She can walk farther and faster than me and I weigh about 3 st less than her.

I've just been looking at my steps data and only do an average of 5,700 daily - so I really do think I need to get this up.

Lemniscate8 · 31/07/2025 11:07

I walk miles and Im fat. Ive just looked up how many steps in a mile, and I must walk 20 thousand a day. I think I am healthier for it, but not thinner

autienotnaughty · 31/07/2025 11:09

I do 15-17 k, steps, go to the gym 1/2 a week, do Pilates and swimming . Eat a high protein low upf diet. I’m 5foot 5 and weighs 11.8 stone which is overweight.
i just want a round of applause.

TorroFerney · 31/07/2025 11:10

As others have suggested it’s conflating two different things, I am slim but nothing to do with my steps and all to do with my diet. The only time „walking“ made any difference was a three week trek in Nepal at altitude where I lost a couple of pounds.

A 15min run burns at the very least 100cals. 10k/1hr will definitely get you above 400cals.

i think it’s just perspective really

Ddakji · 31/07/2025 11:16

Is this actual walking or just steps that everyone is saying they do? So is it a 5 mile walk or just the steps you take walking from the kitchen to the living room and back?

mindutopia · 31/07/2025 11:17

No, because 10k steps a day isn’t really much exercise. I used to walk 10k steps just doing my very sedentary desk job. Days with lots of housework and outdoor jobs (live on a farm with livestock, also have a horse, plus dog and children) it could be 16k. If I actually exercised, more like 20-25k as would often do long hikes. Still overweight/obese.

At the moment, I’m unwell (cancer), might do 2-3k steps and I’m the lightest I’ve been since having children because I have no appetite. 😂

Curiossir · 31/07/2025 11:19

pretty fat here too (BMI of 25 or so)- I walk an average of 14000 a day ( to exceed 5 Million for the year).

Nokonoko · 31/07/2025 11:21

If you balance a good diet with walking it can absolutely contribute to weight loss! I hated the gym, was going 5xweekly and seeing no difference so I quit and instead started walking 10,000-15,000 steps a day and lost half a stone, I’ve never been big (I’m only 8 1/2 stone now) but generally I also feel much better due to walking; clearer head, better skin, more toned, time to myself etc. People saying 10,000 steps a day isn’t much exercise are talking rubbish, it absolutely is and actually when trying to do it without a lot of time (for example the current school holidays!) it’s actually quite hard to fit in! Also to those saying they are obese/overweight it is likely to do with diet.

It’s not about distance or steps, it’s about HR, higher HR = more calories burned

So even if you were to walk 6mi the calories would always be lower than if you ran them. Even with running (and cycling) not all paces are equal. So a base/easy pace would never burn as many on threshold.

I walk loads, weight lift, row, do circuits. I’m fat. Exercise is great for so many reasons but weight loss comes down to diet.

This. I've lost a stone and half over the last year but I'm still a stone and a bit over weight - that's partly been by upping exercise - but it was down to cutting out the snacking. I still eat and drink too much (the eating is really very healthy, but it's too much).

Exercise is great for health, I'm more toned, I'm stronger in my 50s than I was in my 40s due to going back to exercise - and it's done my health and sleep a lot of good. But I'm still overweight.

stayathomer · 31/07/2025 11:24

While it is about food when I walked circa 7-17k steps daily due to work I was much more trim then when I got sedentary job and was eating the same
