If you walk at least 10k steps a day, are you slim?

Just curious really having seen all these “work out how many steps a day you need to lose weight”
I average 7k a day and thinking about increasing it to lose some weight (as well as cutting out snacks. I know weight loss comes mainly from food)

I walk a minimum of 10k steps a day, usually closer to 15k. I try and go running at least 3 times a week (I run for about 30mins).

And yeh, I'm fat 😂 sorry 😁

Pricelessadvice · 31/07/2025 09:09

I average 15-20k steps a day. I also watch what I eat and don’t snack too much. I’d have a biscuit but not a load.

I am slim.

andanotherproblem · 31/07/2025 09:09

No, I do over than just by getting to/from work and being on my feet all day at work and I’m no where near slim, haven’t been for years

I average 10k and I'm fat. I would presumably be even fatter if I didn't though.

Merlin23 · 31/07/2025 09:10

Weight loss comes down to what you eat.
I walk an average of 14000 steps. I have never lost weight walking and average 6 miles a day

Passthecake30 · 31/07/2025 09:12

I average 12k steps and I’m slim.

however I also exercise at least 4 times a week (group bootcamp style classes).

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 31/07/2025 09:14

I walk an average of 15k steps a day, I have a dog so he keeps me moving. I also workout a few times a week (weights, cardio, yoga, swimming) and generally watch what I eat/drink. I'm tall and slimmish with a small waist but at 50, I need to move more and eat less to maintain. Walking alone wouldn't maintain my weight.

HappiestSleeping · 31/07/2025 09:15

@InsanityPolarity while walking is not a bad thing, it isn't really sufficient to lose weight. One would need to walk as quickly as possible. The physics for it is:

Power = force x velocity (where force is mass x accelerstion)

You need power to burn calories. Couple this with controlled intake of calories, and making sure that they are the right type of calories and you will change shape. Adding in elevation helps too, so go up and down hills.

I use the term change shape purposely as I think too many people focus just on weight. I keep track of my waist size. When exercising, you will gain muscle mass, and muscle is heavier than fat for a given volume so you can potentially lose a certain amount of fat, get smaller, but not actually lose weight. If you just concentrate on weight, this can be disheartening when in actual fact, you are achieving your objective.

Also, depending on how much you have to lose, you may not even notice the first stone going. I lost 3 stone a few years ago, and couldn't tell until after the first stone had gone. Take measurements of arm and leg diameters, waist size etc, and track them fortnightly.

Maybe it was just my area but walking 10k became such a massive thing a few years ago to lose weight and after a couple of years my friend (who herself had tried it for well over a year wanting to lose some weight) observed that everyone she knew who was 'getting their 10k in' was still overweight and noone she knew that was slim ever paid attention to step count! She started weightlifting and aligning her diet to more protein/veg heavy before i did and lost the weight, and I remember someone (a 10k steps devotee who was still overweight) arguing with her that she couldn't possibly have lost weight doing something that would make her 'bulk out' and only doing 5000 steps a day. Having said that, its not all about weight loss and I think the 10k craze really improved the cardio fitness of people who might have otherwise not 'worked out'

SitOnHisFaceIfHeDiesHeDies · 31/07/2025 09:17

I walk at least 10k steps most days and up to 30k steps on non working days. I also attend regular gym classes. I'm still 1.5 stone overweight as I eat too much food and drink too much wine.

I'm working on it!

SurferRona · 31/07/2025 09:18

It’s about food not steps. The sites are just flogging something. Look at the calories in a mars bar, the look up how many minutes of aerobic activity like running you need do to burn it off

Yorkshiremum80 · 31/07/2025 09:20

It's mainly from diet unfortunately.
Also a mistake a lot make is to exercise for 30 minutes for example and burn 200 calories, they then think ah great I burned 200 calories i can have 200 calories worth of treat. But in actual fact you haven't burnt 200 extra calories you may have only burnt 180 extra as you would have burnt 20 calories just living. All these figures are made up to make the point 😆

Fibrous · 31/07/2025 09:21

I walk loads, I have two big dogs. I find it bears no relation to my weight, that's all diet. I do lots of other exercise too, and that makes me stronger, but again, I don't lose any lard unless I watch what I eat. Unfortunately. Because I love exercise and hate turning down food.

InsanityPolarity · 31/07/2025 08:21

There goes my easy win hopes 😀

You can loose weight by walking more if you don't eat any more but you need to walk a fair bit. Walking 1000 steps burns about 35-40 calories so if you walked an extra 10,000 steps (and didn't eat any more) then you'd be in a 350-400 calorie a day deficit (assuming your weight is currently stable). 1kg of fat contains 8000 calories so you'd loose a kg every 3 weeks (roughly). Walking 10,000 steps would be an extra 8km/5miles of walking so might take you a couple of hours, depending on how fast you walk. I can walk at 6km/hr pretty comfortably. If you can incorporate walking into your day (like walking to work vs driving or getting the bus) then it's a great way to add extra activity. Most people don't mind walking either so you are less likely to skip it (vs a gym session you don't enjoy).

Cinaferna · 31/07/2025 09:24

FrenchandSaunders · 31/07/2025 08:23

10,000 steps isn’t that far.

It's not, and yet I am shocked by how often I don't reach 10k steps. Working from home can reduce steps to about 1-3k a day unless I make time to go for a walk, and even that only adds 5-6k steps to the daily count.

Icanttakethisanymore · 31/07/2025 09:32

You can't out-run (or out-walk) a bad diet so in reality the amount of calories you burn walking is not going to be significant if you have a tendency to grab a biscuit every time you wonder past the biscuit jar. That being said, I love walking and try to walk vs. get the bus or tube. When I'm in London for work I walk pretty much everywhere. It often doesn't take that much longer than the public transport alternative, it's free and you are never delayed.

It's not an easy win or a quick fix but walking a lot can definitely contribute to a healthier lifestyle and being slim, if you also eat the appropriate amount.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 31/07/2025 09:38

I am slim and struggle to walk 10,000 steps a day on the days that I don’t go for a run (WFH).

ddfd21 · 31/07/2025 09:38

11,000 steps a day average and I lost a lot of weight

Icreatedausernameyippee · 31/07/2025 09:41

So the saying goes "you can't outrun a bad diet". If you're fat it's very likely down to your diet rather than lack of exercise. However, upping your steps will not hurt and you might notice a small weight loss.

persikmeow · 31/07/2025 09:42

No!

NeverAlways · 31/07/2025 09:48

I don’t manage anywhere near 10 thousand steps in my everyday life and I am surprised at some of the numbers on here and most posters are saying they are ‘fat.’ It must help your general health though to keep moving.

pinkbackground · 31/07/2025 09:49

I walk 10k - 20k as I do a manual job and have high energy dogs to walk. I’m slim but can very easily out on weight. I used to be 4.5 stone heavier doing the same amount of steps. I think a lot of it diet rather than steps.

Willowskyblue · 31/07/2025 09:50

Walking alone won’t help you lose fat but is good for health. Watching what you eat will.

RainSoakedNights · 31/07/2025 09:51

Nope.

ForgottenPasswordNewAccount · 31/07/2025 09:52
