Leave the TV on standby? As in if you know you're not going to be using it again for the next few hours / days do you switch it off via remote control or do you switch off the actual plug?

Go...

Alexa turns it off via an adapter

I don't have a TV. I got my laptop hooked up to a big monitor. I stream and watch DVDs. I hate the fact that TV's spy on you, you can't watch it without ads and you have no control over the software.

So, no, I don't have it on in the background. I do sometimes stream stuff in the background, but I prefer music.

Edited, because I had not read the op properly: Not standby either. I turn it off when I am not using it with a switch at the plug on the wall.

Edited

Your TV spies on you, but the laptop that likely has a built-in camera and microphone (that almost certainly shares your activity externally) is ok?

Most TVs nowadays don’t seem to have an on/off switch on the actual television.

They do but it's almost impossible to see it. I had to grab a lantern with the TV instruction on my other hand to see where the off/on switch was in my TV (plus changing channels and increasing/decreasing sound)

People really need to read their TV instructions to find how to find functions without a remote control.

Snozzlemaid · 30/07/2025 13:39

Never turn it off at the wall. Can’t access the plug easily.

Boredlass · 30/07/2025 13:39

Everything goes on standby in our house

ScholesPanda · 30/07/2025 13:40

Leave on standby all the time. I thought I'd read somewhere that the financial and carbon savings of unplugging were almost worthless, whatever the hype.

Was the tin foil hat you wear expensive?

Addictedtohotbaths · 30/07/2025 13:43

Off at the plug every time it’s turned off

Needsleepneedcoffee · 30/07/2025 13:47

Hmm. All of my tvs go on standby.
The bedroom and livingroom ones don't get used for weeks at a time.

Purplecatshopaholic · 30/07/2025 13:49

Standby. Unless I’m going away on holiday maybe.

MyMilchick · 30/07/2025 13:50

Standby

PaddlingSwan · 30/07/2025 13:53

Haven't watched my actual television since about 2016. It is switched off and unplugged. The only thing that is left on all the time is the fridge/freezer.

Lunde · 30/07/2025 13:54

Standby - but pull plug when on holiday

Elderflower14 · 30/07/2025 13:54

Always on Standby.

Wolfpinkola · 30/07/2025 13:56

Standby all day every day

Mabiscuit · 30/07/2025 13:59

Switch off at the plug but sometimes we forget. I guess it saves pennies over a year.

TaupeLemur · 30/07/2025 14:00

Off with the remote, the powers keys aren’t accessible without re-arranging furniture

Missey85 · 30/07/2025 14:01

I always use the remote and leave it on standby 😊

TheEndlessNight · 30/07/2025 14:01

It wouldn't cross my mind to unplug the tv. We just switch it off with the remote.

JoshLymanSwagger · 30/07/2025 14:01

Off at the plug when we go out and overnight.
Standby if we're just not watching it.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/07/2025 14:02

Plug every time, even if it's only 10 minutes.

godmum56 · 30/07/2025 14:09

never off at the wall but my TV has an on off switch so I don't leave it on standby.

TwoBlueFish · 30/07/2025 14:14

Standby during the day and off at night (smart plug controlled by Alexa)

JustChillin70 · 30/07/2025 14:18

Stand by on all TVs

mindutopia · 30/07/2025 14:19

I don’t even know. I just press the button. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I assume that turns it off, but I think sometimes it doesn’t. I wouldn’t intentionally leave it on standby though.
