Am I "tiny"?

I'm not. I've always thiigh of mysefl as a normal healthy build. In a world where a majority are over weight , I'm not that, but I don't think I'm exceptionally thin either.

I've just been for my NHS health check. A bit of a waste of time really, but I hadn't had my cholesterol checked for a while, so I went when I was invited.

I was weight and measured. 5'7", 10st1 in my clothes and 75cm waist. At both my weight and my waist the HCA explained "ooh you're tiny".

That’s odd.

Maybe it was a slip of the tongue.

I am heavier than you but my waist is smaller.
I’m definitely not tiny.

Someone called me tiny the other day (I’m definitely not) and it’s stuck in my head as it’s not something people often say to other people.
It was a slimey man and so I didn’t take it as a compliment but I wonder if this word is being used more.

You sound perfectly healthy. It’s just an odd verb to use.

Natty13 · 25/07/2025 19:14

This is peak MN. Yes you're teeny tiny and an absolute waif. Are you 100% sure you're not secretly French since you're so small?

My bmi used to be 17.5. Underweight. But because I’m 5ft 6 I still wasn’t tiny.

Same as me. A bmi of 17.5 is very slim though, it makes no difference how tall you are because the shorter you are the lower your weight will be to have that bmi.

It’s so hard to visualise. I’m 5’5” (165cm) and weigh 53kg (8 stone 3 pounds).
I believe I am on the slim side but absolutely not tiny.

LapinR0se · 25/07/2025 19:20

Yep I am BMI 19.4

Mirabai · 25/07/2025 19:23

Quite a lot of nurses are overweight,

LizzieLazzie · 25/07/2025 19:24

No, you’re not tiny OP the HCA has a skewed perspective. To be tiny I’d assume you were 5ft or shorter and under 7.5 stone. Claire Lopez, the personal stylist, is 5ft 2 and wears size 6 or sometimes 4. I would describe her as petite. I am 5ft 4, weigh 8.5 stone and consider myself totally average/normal healthy size.

workshy46 · 25/07/2025 19:26

Same height and weight about 8 4 and I’m definitely not tiny .. slim though and narrow. Honestly 10 stone I would think average .. definitely not tiny

Assssofspades · 25/07/2025 19:27

Oh, well you've set the fatties off now.

SophiaSW1 · 25/07/2025 19:36

I’d think the nurse was probably just making conversation. I wouldn’t think too much of it.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 25/07/2025 19:38

Assssofspades · 25/07/2025 19:27

Oh, well you've set the fatties off now.

TBH i’ve only seen people commenting how small they are in comparison to @Lollysoup … but i’ll balance it out if you want the ‘fatties’

I’m 164cm and probably over 70kg ( don’t weight myself) and a size 12/14 cos i have solid legs and arse from workouts. . so huge by the standards here.

I was tiny at birth 5 pounds, only time i ever was! I dont want to be tiny i want to be strong and eat nutritionally well, im in peri and want strong bones not osteoporosis from starving myself for some peoples ideals of a tiny woman cos ‘BMI says’ 🙄

Also health professionals are often overweight because of shiftwork and minimal breaks, eating late as no break at work, eating crap cos the same, night shifts etc. Plus managing a busy home life, plus like us all of a certain age group Menopause!

Almostwelsh · 25/07/2025 19:38

Your waist is quite trim for a woman of 55. Around menopause we tend to thicken around the middle, even if we're not overweight. But no, you're not tiny.

RawBloomers · 25/07/2025 19:40

You're not tiny, your BMI is pretty much smack bang in the middle of the healthy range and you would have been average 50 years ago (with an above average waist size, but you're relatively tall). You are, though, significantly below todays average. About 2/3rds of the population fall into the too heavy range with a lot being obese (only 2% are too light). So you're probably thinner than ~80%, maybe more, of the population.

Given the impact of being overweight on general health, a nurse probably sees a population even more skewed towards being bigger. This may explain her being surprised or she may be struggling with her own weight issues that means she has a personal focus on size and, since it's what she wants, may have thought you'd be flattered and it would make you feel good. Or something else, our culture is quite focused on size and people notice it and assign values to it in a way they wouldn't most other characteristics.

In any case it was an unprofessional comment though probably well meant. It's not important, not relevant to your health and not how everyone will see you.

oopsHereItIs · 25/07/2025 19:45

I’m your height and 9 stone. I feel big next to a petite person.

RawBloomers · 25/07/2025 19:54

WimbyAce · 25/07/2025 18:33

5ft 7 is not incredibly tall! I would imagine just above average.

Edited

5' 7" puts her around the 90th centile for UK women. Which is pretty tall and well above the average of just under 5' 4".

BoudiccaRuled · 25/07/2025 19:55

I'm 5ft 8 and 10st6 and think of myself as fairly chunky, so pretty sure you can't be tiny being shorter and only 5lb less.

Doitrightnow · 25/07/2025 19:57

I don't think that's tiny. Mind you, I'm the same height and waist as you but 1/2 stone lighter and have often been told I'm tiny in similar situations, so it doesn't surprise me.

3luckystars · 25/07/2025 19:57

I don’t think 10 or even 9 stone is tiny. I would say 7 stone is tiny. I wouldn’t want to be tiny.

It’s just words we all use them differently. Be happy.

TroysMammy · 25/07/2025 20:01

At just under 5ft and 8st 8lb I must be minuscule.

lightningatmidnight · 25/07/2025 20:02

Take it as a compliment - she most likely meant it in a nice (albeit slight inappropriate) way

3luckystars · 25/07/2025 20:03

Practically invisible !!

You arent much smaller than me. Maybe like 4 or 5 pounds. And I am most definitely not tiny!

On a side note what did the dr say about your cholesterol. Everyone i know including myself whos had this over 40 health check thing has been told their cholesterol is high. I was given a leaflet of what foods to avoid only to discover minus eggs ( which i mostly just have egg whites anyway ), i basically ate nothing on the list 🤔

Where you mysteriously high too despite being a healthy weight etc

I flummoxed them by having total cholesterol below the recommended amount. Apparently their crib sheets don’t cover that! My HDL was in the expected range, my LDL was very low.

Hah, yes! I'm now on statins. My cholesterol probably is high (I smoke) but it's only been flagged up once before as 'a bit high, no need to worry'.

HCA raved about my healthy weight, it was almost embarrassing. I only just scrape into the healthy category, with a BMI of 24 and waist-to-height of 48%. I'd have understood more if she'd been fat, but she wasn't.

Whatwouldscullydo · 25/07/2025 20:13

Apparently my ratio or whatever is ok. The good vs bad. When I asked if I could still eat eggs as it was literally the only thing on the list I ate in any significant quantity. He told me yes cos I need the protein 🤣🤔

I also track what I eat on MFP and that registers cholesterol intake and I never reach the end of the bar. Sometimes I dont even get anything. So made no sense at all
