Am I "tiny"?

I'm not. I've always thiigh of mysefl as a normal healthy build. In a world where a majority are over weight , I'm not that, but I don't think I'm exceptionally thin either.

I've just been for my NHS health check. A bit of a waste of time really, but I hadn't had my cholesterol checked for a while, so I went when I was invited.

I was weight and measured. 5'7", 10st1 in my clothes and 75cm waist. At both my weight and my waist the HCA explained "ooh you're tiny".

I'm a bit taller than you but if I drop under 10st people ask me if I'm ok, my dad has actually pulled me aside and asked if I'm eating properly, I am plenty! But I have a very straight up and down figure not much of a backside and pretty flat chested and quite broad shoulders so I start looking boney especially around the collarbone . I was in the middle of healthy BMI when I had my wedding dress alterations and the seamstress told me my waist was tiny, it wasn't I was a size 10 , but I guess she compared to my height

People have so much to say when you lose weight dont they. Sometimes it's hard to work out if its coming from a place of caring or if its cos not being the " fat friend/dd etc " anymore suddenly makes them insecure or something and they are suddenly dx you with an eating disorder or exercise addiction or something.

lemoncurd2025 · 25/07/2025 18:22

The last time I was called tiny was as a prem baby when they said I would be short
I’m 5ft 10, the only thing I’ve had all my life is “you’re a big tall girl aren’t you”

No, not tiny. In the middle ish of the healthy weight range for your height. Perhaps their perception is skewed by the fact that about two thirds of the UK adult population is overweight or obese.

This.

Double digits ain't tiny

It's perfectly healthy if you're tall enough but tall is not tiny is it

I agree, I didn't mind it from my dad because he isn't fussed by anyone's appearance so I knew it came from concern. Looking back I did look a bit boney, I'm about half a stone heavier now and objectively look better but I'm also stronger and have more muscle definition which I think helps to look slim but healthy when you don't have the curvy bits!

Dogaredabomb · 25/07/2025 18:26

You sound quite sturdy really, and incredibly tall.

HotCrossBunplease · 25/07/2025 18:27

Surely the issue here is that it is very wrong of a health professional to use any terminology other than “your BMI and waist measurements are in the healthy range.”

Anything more descriptive/subjective/emotive completely undermines the health message. You could have taken that as an instruction to pile on weight OP.

Teeny tiny, yes.

😁

Yeah ive had to accept that anything below 10 st 5 and I feel like crap. Its not worth it. My goal is to build a bit more muscle to improve my lifts etc which isn't compatabile with dropping too much weight even if my thighs do have their own orbit 🤣

Its all about composition really isn't it. Its about time wonen moved away from being as small as possible.

I love how everyone states that most women are now overweight or obese yet everyone commenting is obviously smaller or the same size as the op ( at a normal bmi) and are positively not tiny with meat on their bones🙄

Well op if you felt good after the tiny comment i bet the mumsnet ‘we’ve lost sight of what a normal weight is’ brigade have beaten it out of you 😂

So predictable.

Ha! Assume nothing. I'd be happy with a BMI of 25, let alone a BMI of 22. I don't think mine has been lower than 25 for the last 30 years; currently 2 stone overweight and I'd be scared even to measure my waist because most of it's on my tummy.

mondaytosunday · 25/07/2025 18:31

No. If you were 5’11’ with those measurements then you’d be slim (back in the day 😭 I was ten stone, 70cm waist and that height) but not even very slim! Your BMI is 22 - smack bang in the middle of the healthy range!

ThriveIn2025 · 25/07/2025 18:32

A HCP recently referred to me as “very thin”. I have a healthy BMI. I didn’t take it as a compliment. So yes, I do think people have lost perspective when it comes to body size.

Dogaredabomb · 25/07/2025 18:26

5ft 7 is not incredibly tall! I would imagine just above average.

BananaCaramel · 25/07/2025 18:35

No you aren’t tiny - you are an entirely normal sized person.

My waist is smaller than yours - a statement of fact, not a competition - and I’m a solid 8-10, emphasis on the 10 because I have a substantial backside.

What a weird thing for them to say.

CuddlySheepCalledBagel · 25/07/2025 18:36

I’m 5ft 1 and weigh 7st.. I’m not even tiny 😂

whitewinespritzerandastraw · 25/07/2025 18:38

I really dislike the word “tiny” used in this way.

It used to be mean small in stature, now it effectively means skinny and something for females to strive for.

It was strange for a health care professional to use it. Sounds like she was trying to pay you a compliment, despite that not really being appropriate.

cramptramp · 25/07/2025 18:38

My bmi used to be 17.5. Underweight. But because I’m 5ft 6 I still wasn’t tiny.

LaLaLandDreams · 25/07/2025 18:39

I weight 7stone 12 most of the time so must be extra tiny. Currently bang on 8 I think.

MrsSunshine2b · 25/07/2025 18:42

PersephonePomegranate · 25/07/2025 18:15

A BMI of 19 is not underweight!

It's seen as very unusual in this day and age.

I used to have a BMI of 19 and got called all sorts including stick insect.

My SIL was particularly persistent, working together with my husband's ex to spread rumours I had EDs, saying I looked "disgusting", and saying I clearly had body dysmorphia and should be hospitalised when I told her I was a healthy weight.

Then one day she started ranting at DH, saying I was "emaciated" and he said, "You wouldn't like it if I said you were fat." She went off on one and didn't speak to him for 6 months. Funny how that works.

Fizbosshoes · 25/07/2025 18:45

Just from your height I'd say tiny was inaccurate. I'm under 5ft and have occasionally been called tiny. However I'm not especially thin, but the height of a junior school child

MyUmberSeal · 25/07/2025 18:47

No, you’re not tiny, you’re a healthy weight. Disregard the comment made, all is good.

Marylou2 · 25/07/2025 18:51

You're a normal healthy weight. I'm the same height and 10lbs heavier. I'd be chuffed if anyone said I was tiny. Float around for the weekend OP!!

GlastoNinja · 25/07/2025 18:59

I think sometimes HCPs comment like this to try and be welcoming and relaxing. I’ve had similar comments which were meant to be complimentary but weren’t particularly accurate 🤣

SunflowerLife · 25/07/2025 19:02

No. Slim but healthy size. She probably thought she was complimenting you. A non issue and I don't think you should take offence. Unless you're hoping for people here to reinforce the idea that you are tiny.

awkwardasfuck · 25/07/2025 19:02

Doubt this actually happened, just a brag. You're not tiny. I wasn't, at shorter and lighter than that.
