Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

Julie Hesmondhalgh in the bar after her one-woman play. Absolutely lovely lady.

She came and did some shows with our choir and was just the loveliest person, absolutely the nicest celeb I've ever met.

sweatervest · 23/07/2025 18:00

i met shirley ballas. i was thinking she'd be not that great but she honestly could not have been any nicer and i am a low-level peasant so she had no need to be nice to me but she was honestly the best and amazing.

@menopause59 I haven't RTFT but James Cordon's name usually comes up in these threads quite a lot. A relative has worked as an extra for years and used to really love him - until she actually met him. She said he treats everyone as if they're menials.

I’ve never read a good review of James Corden.

But…can anyone explain why he has such a high opinion of himself? It baffles me.

Really? I didn't know that?

Yes lots of women have said that Bill Clinton raped them.

Google "bill clinton rape" and they will all come up

@countrygirl99 I covert their house!!’

Johannes Radebe was absolutely lovely at the stage door of his last solo show- he made a little video for my mum (who’d ran for her bus home). I remember he spent ages talking to a fan who looked a bit tearful
and overwhelmed - he really seemed to be listening to her and trying to comfort her.

He is as elegant as he looks on telly, beautifully put together and smells of Penhaligon’s Halfeti.

I keep thinking of more. Jill Dando once came to our workplace. It's always a bit of an eye-roll when people gush about someone being glowing or having an aura about them, but she absolutely did. Her smile lit up the room. Just beautiful. I would imagine similar to Princess Diana.

I met her when she came to a school event at th3 museum I worked at. I totally agree with all your comments. She was so lovely, genuine, kind, modest and well-informed, and spent ages talking to the children.

Also beautiful and very like Diana.

it was absolutely tragic that her life ended as it did.

Paul McCartney - lovely (slightly bonkers). His daughters: Stella is vile: Mary is smart and kind.
Gordon Ramsay: complete basket case of nerves. Actually a very nice person but deep-seated anxiety.
Denise Van Outen was (20 odd years ago) a stuck up madam, Graham Norton (same time frame) was wonderful.
Chris Packham is an absolute sex pest - as was Gary Rhodes.
Mark Williams is a nice guy.
Helen McCrory was one of the nicest people I've ever met. I have told this story on MN before: I went to see her in Medea which was a very hard play. Needed a drink afterwards and then the cast came in. She took one look at me and asked: "have you just seen the play?". She bought me a drink and we had a very lovely chat.

Surprised at “sex pest” Chris Packham, do you mean CP the Springwatch presenter ? A friend worked with him for a while and had nothing but good things to say.

I haven't either, but Ruth Jones is lovely and she seems to like him so he must have something positive about him.

Has anyone met Ross Kemp ? I’m terrified of him and get scared whenever I see him on screen ! Tell me he’s nice really ?!!

My friend met him in a work capacity. She said that he was really nice, great sense of humour and if anything a bit of a hammy luvvie.

Basically a million miles away from Grant Mitchell.

TeaandHobnobs · 23/07/2025 19:29

@PollyCherry one of my kids was at school with one of his for a while - he was always very polite and friendly.

Grandma60 · 23/07/2025 19:32

The late Tommy Cooper was at a hotel I stayed at in the 70s. He was loud, full of himself, and all other guests were kept waiting while he was waited on

Esther Rantzen was friendly at an event in Cambridge with her oldest daughter (then about 2-3 years old), one-time Corrie actor Bruce Jones was shyly polite in a pub in Wales, and John Major was chatting away like a long-lost friend during lunch at Blakeney Point, surrounded by bodyguards

I’m wondering if the poster meant Chris Langham ?

My friend’s mum met T C on a train journey and her verdict was that he was odd, but perfectly pleasant,

OrlandointheWilderness · 23/07/2025 20:08

Princess Anne was absolutely fab when I met her. She was lovely to my 8 year old DD - really engaged and took her seriously. My DM spent a morning with her for a royal visit and lunch and said she was a dream - knew everything about the project, knew the people involved, remembered people she’d met a couple of year previously. DM said on her own she was really friendly and chatty and they had a moment roaring with laughter over a private joke. Nothing bad to say about her - that day she made absolutely everyone she encountered feel special.

Karistyleaftea · 23/07/2025 20:09

@CoffeeCantata Jill Dando was a really lovely person.
I worked on the same paper with her when she was just starting out, in the 80's.
She was delightful and I was not surprised at all that she had a terrific career.
Her dad was a lovely, lovely man too.
RIP.

He bit someone’s ear off in a fight - or was it his nose?”

He was returning from a funeral and wake at The Groucho Club in Soho where he had read the eulogy of close friend, producer Verity Lambert. He was shouted at in the street by someone who is described as a "vagrant". The man kept shouting at him calling him "Jonathan Creek" which Alan initially ignored, but the guy became more and more aggressive and abusive and started calling him a "c*nt". Alan snapped at this point, and being worse for wear after having a few drinks at the club, lunged into the guy, sinking his teeth into his ear and making it bleed. He admitted later that it had been an emotional and upsetting day and that he'd had far too much to drink than was normal and that he'd "lost it". He apologised for his behaviour and the guy who was bitten did not press charges.

We met Thomas f Wilson who played Biff from back to the future at a comic con. He definitely thought he was as famous as Christopher Lloyd and was an absolute bell end. He was so rude and signed over Christopher Lloyd and Micheal J Foxes autograph in someone's delorean
Met a couple of famous people Chris Barry - Rimmer from red dwarf was lovely and so was Joe Pasquale

Oh that's a shame! Have you seen his song he does about being asked questions? It's absolutely brilliant 😊

Alas, it’s well known among people who work in the theatre world that Michael Sheen is an absolute nightmare.

personally: Emma Watson. No understatement to say I hated her, and I didn’t meet her as “a celeb” either. This was when she was doing her year “abroad” in Oxford (her home town, actually…). She was an up-herself, arrogant posh bitch.

Agree on Emma Watson. I knew of her growing up. Always been her way. Seems she hasn't changed.

What was she like growing up?

Is there anyone from oxford that isnt a posh twat though.

I just went to a group that was full of people from oxford. Christ they were all posh twats.

Someone close to me was interviewed by Andrew Neil as they are a specialist on a particular topic that was in the news at the time. Said he was a lech who asked her out to dinner when the interview ended.

It wouldn't surprise me at all. I found him odious and kept out of his way as much as possible.

jay55 · 23/07/2025 20:51

I’m sat near Abbey Lee Miller right now, and she’s ignoring anyone who even tries to ask if she’s her. But has been chatting to the chap in the row behind(who I’m sure has no idea who she is) quite happily.
