Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

Charles wasn't "forced". He was advised. He was a grown man of 31. He should have done what he wanted.

Im sure that Prince harry was also advised not to marry Meghan, and marry someone more suitable (young white british).

But harry didnt listen.

Edited

He was told he couldn't be king if he married Camilla. He presumably felt that if he couldn't have the woman he really wanted, he may as well have anyone at all. Now, if I were Camilla, I might feel fairly irritated that he chose a crown over me. But there's no indication Diana was under any illusion that it was ever anything other than an arranged marriage. As evidenced by her own behaviour within it...

I very much doubt Harry's choice got much dissuasion, largely because of what had happened with Charles. It was a different time.

And Camilla approved of KC marrying Diana because she thought being young it would be easier to manipulate her.
The Royals had never foreseen Diana’s popularity and even after she died they just couldn’t understand the adulation she received.

A friend of mine played opposite Cilla in a Panto. She (my friend) had to do a lot of lip biting and eye rolling, especially when CB kept going on about ‘our Jack’.

Our Jack and the Beanstalk, was it?Grin

Diana definitely did not think that it was an arranged marriage.

She talked about her hurt over the Charles and Camilla affair many times

Am I the only person on MN who has never met a famous person? I've seen a few in the distance and I've known a couple of people before they were famous but I've never spoken to anyone with active celebrity status, not even z-list.

I haven't. Well Martin Clunes pushed in front of me in a shop in about 1998, but that's it 😅

So she did.

Oddly, she never spoke about the hurt she caused Charles with her affairs.

Or of the (significant, and publicly acknowledged) hurt she caused the wives of the several married men she bedded.

NovaF · 22/07/2025 23:35

David Mitchell was a rude shit - this was at one of his actual shows!

Met Lily Allen at a seance! She gave a different name, was obviously her, was very friendly, chatty and personable.

Encountered Jennifer Saunders and Sharon Horgan, both absolutely stunning and lovely.

When my cousin was six her grandparents took her to Alton Towers. She saw Andy Peters (at the height of fame in 1990). She went up and asked for an autograph. He told her he was busy then turned to look out the window. Cold.

Annie Lennox and Kate Bush. Annie was incredibly vain, Kate manipulative.

Oh no, not Kate 😢

EricTheGardener · 22/07/2025 23:39

Worked in the music industry many moons ago. The nicest, sweetest, most naturally engaging person I ever met was Lionel Richie. An absolute charmer.

Others who were beyond lovely:
Mel C
Darius Campbell
Paul McCartney
Bryan Adams
Rufus Wainwright

I don't think I met anyone who was a total dick. There were a few who didn't seem to have much going on between the ears like most of S Club 7 and a couple who were a bit dead behind the eyes like Jennifer Lopez but no-one who was an out-and-out arse.

These were all mostly fleeting encounters, so what do I know, really.

DH once got into a lift she was in and she insisted her assistant had to tell him to get out, because she didn't travel in lifts with unknowns. Silly cow. She was famously hated at his place of work.

😮😮😮😮.

So by that logic, do you also think that charles and camilla were wrong to have an affair then?

God, I wonder if these people realised they were signing up to be a sort of permanent Butlins Redcoat to the world when they got into TV. Sounds awful. Imagine having to be "on" like this all the time - even when you're on your period or your mum is in hospital or you just haven't slept.

You don't bite the hand that feeds and besides, politeness costs nothing. I particularly dislike anyone up the fame ladder who treats underlings and lowly staff/crew with contempt.

Aside from all that, I met Aled Jones recently, and he was absolutely charming and friendly, very down to earth, and didn't take himself too seriously.

Many years ago I met Andrew Neil, at that time Editor of the Sunday Times, and more recently a tv political pundit. Utter slimeball who gave me the creeps.

Cilla Black

Wow

OtherS · 22/07/2025 23:51

I really don't care. Usually, I'm very much anti-cheating. But of all the situations in the world, this is one where (to me) it's much more understandable and forgivable. I don't care particularly about any of them, or the royals as an institution - but of the 'three people in the marriage', Diana was definitely the worst.

But this is irrelevant to the thread, all I said was that my aunt met Camilla and liked her! I really don't care who the king may or may not have bonked over the years.

So I'm off to bed x

The video of Cilla and the undercover Cosmopolitan journalist who infiltrated Blind Date really doesn't show CB in a good light.

If you want to watch the tribute It's fairly amusing although it may be just to people who know him-if you search youtube-'My Tribute to Cilla Black, Sam' it'll probably come up. I haven't seen that but I will look for it!

Kate Adie. Can't go into details, but without doubt the single most unpleasant person I've ever had to deal with.

Interesting! My dad was on the jury at one of the Iranian siege cases and he said she was very disruptive in court about doing her telly scenes, making a racket and being all do you know who I am ... the judge apparently gave her a proper dressing down 😉

"Diana was definitely the worse"

I disagree. She was 19 and they were 31 at the start. There was a power imbalance

whitewineandsun · 22/07/2025 23:59

The only people who I’d be desperately gutted to hear are not lovely are Anthony Stewart-Head...

He was so kind to me and excused himself after chatting with me, saying he had to go because there would be fans at the stage door, and he didn't want to disappoint them. I will forever sing his praises for talent and charm.

I don’t believe you. Michael Sheen comes across as a sweetheart. So does Emma Watson

…okay? This whole thread is about people who “come across” as nice but aren’t.

user1499191107 · 23/07/2025 00:08

This was a long time ago (mid 80s) but I'll always remember it. Met the members of Spandau Ballet in Sydney, in a group of fans. 3 of the 5 were lovely, chatted, gave autographs and let us take photos with them. The other 2 (sadly one of them was my massive crush) just stalked by the group with no acknowledgement, and sat in their limo. It was funny really because they ended up having to wait for the others anyway, and they spent probably about 15 minutes with us. I understand that everyone has bad days and gets tired, and whatever, but it would honestly have been enough to get a quick wave or smile. We were just teenagers.
We also met Paul Young on two separate occasions around the same time, and he was just the loveliest man, so happy to meet fans even though he had just gotten off a long flight.

You’re absolutely not wrong. She’s so unpleasant. I did wonder whether she’d have been as bad if she hadn’t been famous since she was 11, though — it might not be all her fault.

I think that the Miranda Richardson Comic Relief of her is bang on. "Oh Hermione is nothing like me at all!!!"

Yet she is at Oxford, started an MA and then suddenly switched to a DPhil. How many people manage that?!

YoungBlud - I met whilst I nipped out for some lunch at work, my daughter was incredibly jealous and he truly is as lovely as he seems in the press. A true gentleman.

Dappy from Ndubz - comes across as a bit of a twit, but genuinely a very lovely and down to earth guy as were his team, apart from the manager who was a sleaze! He was very chatty, invited us onto his tour bus and cracked a bottle of champagne open (I still have the cork somewhere🤣)
