Famous people you thought would be nice, but were tw*ts?

Have you met someone famous and they turned out to be a bit of a twat?

I once met Steve Coogan (who I thought was hilarious as Alan Partridge) who was a sexist, lecherous buffoon IRL.

Lily Allen - dreadful horrible person
Sandy Toksvig - as per Lily Allen
Schofield - awful

Lineker - nicer in person than he seems on tv
chris Martin - lovely
James blunt - lovely and humble
children's tv presenter tall bloke catch phrase, lovely

one of my children was at school with Sandi Tosvig’s dc and we did play dates and birthdays. I found her lovely - a bit scatty and v busy, but v nice

ladyinwaiting99 · 22/07/2025 22:56

Bit of an old one this but apparently Enid Blyton was awful and didn’t like children very much. A close relative went to school near her house, when she was writing a new book she would “invite some children to tea” nobody liked going because she wasn’t very nice to them but she pretty much demanded it because she wanted to witness real children interacting for her books.

Has anyone met Hugh Grant?

I confess I’ve NEVER warmed to Emma W. I feel better now you’ve said this..

I get hyper-competitive, very superior, narcissistic vibes from all the interviews I’ve seen, but felt guilty about thinking that!

You’re absolutely not wrong. She’s so unpleasant. I did wonder whether she’d have been as bad if she hadn’t been famous since she was 11, though — it might not be all her fault.

Cinaferna · 22/07/2025 22:58

Yep, plus you don’t know whats happening in that persons life, a friend is a bit famous, a fan was very rude when he turned down an autograph request on a train, he was on the way to hospital hoping to see his grandma before she died.

A close friend of mine was incredibly famous for a while. We couldn't walk down the street or go for a coffee without being stopped by someone every few seconds. No chance of a quiet catch up in a cafe or bar. She was so gracious about it. I was the moody mare that wanted to spit on people to make them go away so she could have a moment's peace. It made me realise that I'd hate to be famous as that level of intrusion and interruption would trigger the worst side of my character.

My daughter worked for a designer who was a favourite of Camilla and said she was lovely. Arrived for fittings in an old Volvo and was utterly unassuming, kind, smiley and had time for everyone.

(i like her and I’m sad when people are vile about her. The whole marriage scenario was way more complicated and morally nuanced than people realise. Diana wasn’t a saint and Camilla wasn’t a devil!)

I dont know. I think that you just should just not be with a married man. Especally when they have kids. Camilla was selifsh

There is a man that i used to be in love with and he was in love with me

We broke up. He is now married. I still see him at a hobby that i go to.

There are still feelings there, but i would never ever go near him, because he is married with kids.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 22/07/2025 23:03

It’s all nonsense and practically nobody knows what Joe bloggs famous person is like. They would just like to, probably, although god knows why.

Fleetheart · 22/07/2025 17:03

Alan Davies, sat next to him across the aisle on a plane once, quite a while ago. He was very sneery and took the mick out of me reading to my daughter. I didn't take to him and was surprised as I thought he would be nice in real life.

He bit someone’s ear off in a fight - or was it his nose?”

Alas, it’s well known among people who work in the theatre world that Michael Sheen is an absolute nightmare.

personally: Emma Watson. No understatement to say I hated her, and I didn’t meet her as “a celeb” either. This was when she was doing her year “abroad” in Oxford (her home town, actually…). She was an up-herself, arrogant posh bitch.

I don’t believe you. Michael Sheen comes across as a sweetheart. So does Emma Watson

Paul McCartney - lovely (slightly bonkers). His daughters: Stella is vile: Mary is smart and kind.
Gordon Ramsay: complete basket case of nerves. Actually a very nice person but deep-seated anxiety.
Denise Van Outen was (20 odd years ago) a stuck up madam, Graham Norton (same time frame) was wonderful.
Chris Packham is an absolute sex pest - as was Gary Rhodes.
Mark Williams is a nice guy.
Helen McCrory was one of the nicest people I've ever met. I have told this story on MN before: I went to see her in Medea which was a very hard play. Needed a drink afterwards and then the cast came in. She took one look at me and asked: "have you just seen the play?". She bought me a drink and we had a very lovely chat.

Chris Packham being a sex pest is one of the weirdest things I've ever heard. It seems unimaginable. What does he do? Unzip his anorak very very slowly? Ask people if they want to come up and see his fledglings?

Emma watson - that just got banned from driving?

She is not that sweet and innocent

JohnnyLuLus · 22/07/2025 23:10

A pp has mentioned her, but I second Julie Walters - a really lovely woman. She received an honorary doctorate at my degree ceremony and came and mingled with everyone afterwards with her glass of champagne in a plastic flute like the rest of us. She had time for everyone (and their families).
More recently she is patron of a small local charity, and does so much for them, is very humble and quietly supportive without fanfare.

Similarly Hugh Bonneville is local and does a lot of work with the community. He volunteered at our local COVID vaccine clinic as well. A lovely, kind man and very generous with his time.

Su Pollard is exactly as you'd expect, mad! My (then) 2 year old barked at her and she barked back! She was wearing long fake plaits attached to an alice band. Quiet voice though.

I love Sue and I’m glad she’s as bonkers as she appears.

Offleyhoo · 22/07/2025 23:11

Someone mentioned Anthony Head above - yep, lovely! Once I accidentally bashed his trolley with mine in the supermarket, totally my fault, yet he apologised charmingly. Another time I saw him in Pets at Home and he complimented my puppy and patted him sweetly. No I am not a stalker, nor have I ever watched Buffy.

A well known TV hypnotist, less lovely.

Greencactusgirl · 22/07/2025 23:11

Shirley Hughes. Came to give a talk at our children’s book group. Lovely lady who signed all my sons copies of her books that I had taken with me.

LevelUpDown · 22/07/2025 23:12

It’s Jess Glynne. No surprise

Emma Watson is sadly not liked on Mumsnet, since she has spoken out against JK.

HonestOpalHelper · 22/07/2025 23:14

Mine are going back a bit from my teenage days backstage.
Terry Scott, really nice chap
Leonard Rossiter, very nice, very professional, but to the extent he wasn't very tolerant of others who were not taking things as seriously!

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 22/07/2025 23:17

An old one, but former politician Jeffrey Archer was surprisingly nice. I was working at an event for him years ago and at the end of the evening he came and thanked me and my colleague for being there. We'd had no choice, it was an assignment which he'd have known, and he had no obligation to speak with us but was pleasant and friendly.

JohnnyLuLus · 22/07/2025 23:17

Rainbird26 · 22/07/2025 17:42

Oh no that’s annoying! He was with his Dad when I met him, about 2001 and he was honestly so lovely!

A friend of mine's husband has done a lot of work on Vinnie Jone's house. He was very glad to get it done and works never work for him again.

Was your ex forced into an arranged marriage with a 'suitable' woman that he barely knew, let alone loved? Was his wife also aware of the arrangement? Is his wife currently having insulting open affairs, usually with married men?

Charles wasn't "forced". He was advised. He was a grown man of 31. He should have done what he wanted.

Im sure that Prince harry was also advised not to marry Meghan, and marry someone more suitable (young white british).

But harry didnt listen.

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 23:23

And also there were young children involved when Camilla had the affair with Charles. Which makes it worse.
