In a post-apocalyptic future would you rather...

struggle for survival on the harsh and bleak surface with other survivors

or

live in a nice comfy large bunker with a few thousand people and all the mod cons except you can't go outside, or communicate with anyone outside?

See, I assumed everyone would choose the bunker but some friends said they'd rather chance death on the outside than live in a bunker, even if it was huge.

Polling wouldn't let me put only two options so you can also choose to die in the apocalypse and opt out of either scenario.

Aim to die quickly and relatively painlessly, rather than slowly and horribly when I ran out of life sustaining medication.

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/07/2025 18:43

Although I do have questions about that show. Some of which have been raised here.

@Orangemintcream Your orangery sounds like my idea of heaven. Can I please join your team. I am a very quiet introvert who would bring chocolate and books. I can start a fire without matches if that helps with my application.

I could cope with that. It’s a big stately home. Huge grounds.

Own herd of deer. River full of trout.

What’s the show called? Google just takes me to silo!

My mistake, sorry! It's on Disney+. Got confused with Silo.

It isn't advertised as a post apocalyptic bunker show, just a standard action thriller that is then revealed to be in a bunker, so I think a lot of people have overlooked it. (Sorry if this spoils it for anyone!) it's called Paradise and it's brilliant.

If go to the bunker for a while, get my bearings me and then eat up, fall in love and take my chances outside then with another escapee then. I wouldn’t spend the rest of my life in a bunker no way. We all need nature.

If it was a bunker like in Silo, I would live there but only if there was a plan for eventually going outside. Even if it was not in my lifetime, but let’s gather data and plan for when people can go back outside, that would be fine. None of the secrecy and suppression of Silo, but people working together for a purpose.

I haven't seen the film, but just your put us making my heart race... there's no way I could cope with being in a bunker where you cannot go outside.

The panic is real

Ah no, once you're in the bunker, it's sealed. Can't have people going outside and potentially telling people about the bunker because then the bunker gets raided and RIP bunker.

SassyAquaBear · 18/07/2025 18:59

Outside for me.

Bunkers are not guaranteed to be harmonious communities. If a group goes rogue, there's nowhere to run.

gamerchick · 18/07/2025 19:00

A woman on the outside would have to stay hidden. She would be raped and killed or kept prisoner. It would be an isolating existence.

ObtuseMoose · 18/07/2025 19:02

noblegiraffe · 18/07/2025 16:56

Surely the same applies to the outside! People nicking your berries (or even knocking you off and then roasting you over a campfire)

I feel weirdly OK about being roasted and eaten as long as I'm dead when it happens!

Ah that one, with Cyclops from X Men as a President! I have been meaning to watch it.

Need to bump it up your watch list and then come back and report whether you'd live in that bunker!

This is very noble of you, but you might not want to go around telling people that in a post-apocalyptic situation.

Depends who I was stuck in the bunker with!

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 18/07/2025 19:28

Also who is running the bunker....

Steelworks · 18/07/2025 19:30

I’d want to die a quick and instant death.

ohyesido · 18/07/2025 16:36

@noblegiraffesadly not, my DH says I’d be the first one to die in the Hunger Games because I’m too busy faffing about

Hahaha 😂😂😂

On the outside. I’ve got raging ADHD and was BORN for a crisis. Bring it on 💪🏻

Have found my apocalypse buddy! 😂💪🤯

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 18/07/2025 20:11

If you're in the bunker then the people who are the biggest threat to you are those you've assigned to protect the bunker. Which is a problem as those are the people who know you, know the layout of the bunker, and have a strong motivation to get rid of you take over for themselves.

Clockface222 · 18/07/2025 20:14

I think either a quick death or life on the outside depending on the degree of environmental destruction e.g will it be -40 or boiling hot, will vegetation grow, how much competition for resources is there etc.

I would consider a bunker only it was of the futuristic type which makes it seem like you are actually outside and it wasn't too crowded.

KaitlynnFairchild · 18/07/2025 20:21

I’ve watched The 100, people living in bunkers either turn into cannibals or horrible people using the outside people for their own medical purposes.

I would never survive on the outside so I just hope for a quick pain free death. Like the asteroid hitting directly on my house without warning.

noblegiraffe · 18/07/2025 19:26

I'm going to get it printed on a t-shirt so I'm ready to don it should the world descend into chaos.

strangeandfamiliar · 18/07/2025 20:23

Instant death for me thanks.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/07/2025 20:33

I’m in the bunker if it’s just me.

DD and DH have their Zombie Apocalypse plan and they LOVE camping so we’re outside if I’m with them.
