struggle for survival on the harsh and bleak surface with other survivors

or

live in a nice comfy large bunker with a few thousand people and all the mod cons except you can't go outside, or communicate with anyone outside?

See, I assumed everyone would choose the bunker but some friends said they'd rather chance death on the outside than live in a bunker, even if it was huge.

Polling wouldn't let me put only two options so you can also choose to die in the apocalypse and opt out of either scenario.

I’d want to die very quickly. I’m vegetarian, on a couple of meds and I don’t like extreme temperatures.

Needmorelego · 18/07/2025 17:57

@noblegiraffe have you read the teen book "Children of the Dust" by Louise Lawrence.
Your scenario is essentially the plot.
Nuclear War - some in a bunker, some not.
100 years or so later which society is doing better....
(I won't plot spoil)

Orangemintcream · 18/07/2025 17:58

Take my chances outside.

Sometimes I fantasise about a world with no other humans in it and how I would live. I would love the peace.

I could rinse the local pharmacies. Stock up. Set up house in a stately home with an orangery. Grown my own food.

Eat the wildlife.

Find a axe. Cook on fire wood.

So much peace.

BabyEatsEverything · 18/07/2025 18:00

Bunker as long as there is the option to leave when the crazies take over in charge

MayBeee · 18/07/2025 18:03

Voted die ( hopefully in first wave of whatever wipes the majority out )

I'm not in best of health , take lots of medication to keep me going . Not particularly young , definitely not fertile , no real skill etc so don't think I'd be picked to take up a space anyway so best I'm a goner from the get go .

LittlleMy · 18/07/2025 18:04

Anyone intrigued by this should watch ‘Fallout’ on Prime if you have it. I’m nit at all a Sci-fi fan but it was honestly a very fun watch with a string female lead to boot!

Given how stressed out I get if I even find I’ve left my brolly at home when I venture outdoors, I better stay in the bunker 24/7 😅

(Don’t want to die in case it’s a horrible painful drawn out death 😬)

AffIt · 18/07/2025 18:09

Outside.

I'm an outdoorsy sort who knows about foraging, I can and have caught and killed my own protein sources and I hate people.

Also fairly open to the concept of death, if the worst comes to the worst. 😄

Pubgarden · 18/07/2025 18:10

@Orangemintcream Your orangery sounds like my idea of heaven. Can I please join your team. I am a very quiet introvert who would bring chocolate and books. I can start a fire without matches if that helps with my application.

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2025 18:12

That’s a good point re meds.
If people run out then surely they will not be able to survive in a bunker anyway ? Or have to go out to get more and risk death anyway? Only the fittest would be able to go underground? How much stuff would be needed and who has the job of ordering and organizing the right equipment and meds before hand?

HamiltonHarty · 18/07/2025 18:18

Imagine being in a bunker with some of the people you see on social media 😣

SleepQuest33 · 18/07/2025 18:19

Living in a bunker for ever is not living! No thanks!

sallsterm · 18/07/2025 18:24

Comfy bunker then emerge like Fallout 3 of course.

There's a show on Apple TV with people living in a bunker (not Silo!) which looks very pleasant - it's a bit like the Truman show in that it has a big light to look like the sun, a fake sky, and everyone lives in nice houses. But it's in a mountain. That was all set up beforehand by a multibillionaire who stocked it with everything one could possibly need.

I would totally be up for that bunker.

The video games are brilliant!! Played them years ago.

Fallout was great, I didn't expect much from it being based on a video game but I am very much looking forward to season 2!

@noblegiraffe The games are great, they had a rich world to draw from.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/07/2025 18:29

Definitely outside. Inside would be like an academy convinced that Ofsted is going to call within half an hour every single day and that their next step to Leadership is just within their sweaty grasp.

FlatErica · 18/07/2025 18:30

I’d have a go at surviving outside if it could be guaranteed that all the bastards got killed. Its people that are the issue!

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/07/2025 18:31

I'd take my chances outside.

Bunker life is not for me. I'd probably end up being the danger in there.😳🤯😱

DucksGiven2 · 18/07/2025 18:32

I'd rather be outside and construct my own bunker.

What’s the show called? Google just takes me to silo!

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/07/2025 18:37

Is it the sort of bunker where being on the inside would look like being on the outside?

Yes! The comfiest of bunkers.

OP posts:
Needmorelego · 18/07/2025 18:39

@the80sweregreat in the book I mentioned above ("Children of the Dust") the bunker is essentially for people in the military and a bunch of scientists.
The character who ends up in there was just a regular bloke (possibly an English teacher?) who gets in by luck - his car is flagged down by someone with a pass.
When the people in the bunker start having children and then they need to start teaching them, the non military/science bloke realises that they hadn't really planned for a good society because there was no artists, historians, those with knowledge of literature etc in the bunker.
Just military and science 🙁
(that's not plot spoilers.... there's more to the story)

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/07/2025 18:41

In that case I’m definitely in the bunker.
