Mini skirts- when is one too old to wear them?

Hi everyone,
Just after opinions pls.....
I wear shorts and mini skirts a lot in the summer, I am very comfortable in both. However I am 'mature' shall I say. I am of small build UK size 8 or 10. I have just recently started wondering ...'am I too old to wear such attire?'
Any thoughts would be very welcome....thx :)

Well obviously the answer is never, and you should wear them for as long as you want!

I am late 40s and still wear short shorts (though not hot pants) and shortish skirts, though probably wouldn’t wear them shorter than mid thigh. That’s just what I’m comfortable with personally though. I don’t see myself aging out of them at any particular point.

Love that answer!

I wish I'd spelled it correctly! WEAR!

Aimtodobetter · 16/07/2025 15:05

If your wondering if your too old to wear them you probably are a bit mature for the style to be “normally” appropriate - at the same point, if you want to continue and don’t care about other people’s opinion's then go for it / your not hurting anyone.

YourWinter · 16/07/2025 15:05

Never too old to wear what you like.

CremeEggThief · 16/07/2025 15:05

As long as you feel good in it and you're happy with how you look is all that matters.

spoonbillstretford · 16/07/2025 15:06

I'm 49 and just bought quite a short skirt, to celebrate being back in a size 10.

I didn't even notice the spelling error...lol

Who's making the "too old" judgement? It's up to you what you wear. If someone else thinks that it's too old for them, then presumably they won't wear it - but you can!

I guess I would find it a little strange if all the elderly ladies who I meet at our local day centre and in the care home were wearing mini skirts, but again that's purely convention.

Thanks ppl....appreciated comments and thoughts on this

Im 50 and wear both. Im in pretty much the best shape Ive been in since my mid20’s and I feel great, and have been told by plenty of people I look fab and look in my early 40’s.
tbf though even if they told me i looked like mutton dressed as lamb and 60 I’d still wear what I do. I like the way I look and dress and don’t care what anyone else thinks. Spent too much of my younger years caring. Peri-menopause is great for the ‘no more F’s to give’ mindset!

LoveSoftAsAnEasyChair · 16/07/2025 15:15

I think it depends on how it makes you project yourself .
If you wear any kind of clothing that makes you feel self conscious, then you’re likely to come across as not relaxed and not confident.

Just be yourself, and wear what makes you comfortable on your body and in your head.

If other peoples opinions (stated or unstated) means it will make you feel miserable, then I suppose you will go with that… though I so hate the idea of others (family, friends, strangers) wittingly or unwittingly influencing my choices.

DuskyPink1984 · 16/07/2025 15:19

My mum was 65 and still wore shorts and flip flops in summer. If she were alive now, I bet she still would be, too.

I am 53 now and still wearing shorts. I haven't ever really worn short skirts.

CMOTDibbler · 16/07/2025 16:20

52 here and still wearing a mini skirt when I feel like it. Age doesn’t control what you wear, the length of your hair or anything else

MyQuirkyTraybake · 16/07/2025 16:50

You're never too old.

mezlou84 · 16/07/2025 19:39

My aunt still wears them in her mid 60s. She's no bigger than size 8 and still does alot of younger activities. I wouldn't wear one ever but I'm too fat to look good in one 😂. As long as you feel good in what you're wearing ignore everyone else because I can imagine everyone will have differing opinions and how you feel is the opinion you should be taking.

Chipsahoy · 16/07/2025 19:41

I am 42 and a size 8 too. I wear mini skirts and dresses in winter with thick tights. In summer I fairly short shorts and some of my skirts are mid thigh. I am aware of some wobbly skin around my knees even though I exercise a lot so sometimes feel a bit self conscious but not because I feel too old for the short skirt.

Newbie8918 · 16/07/2025 19:50

Never too old. I’m also ‘mature’ and wear both but I style them slightly differently now. Shorts are more tailored with leather belts and a nicely cut shirt. Skirts are nicely cut too. I don’t tend to wear Lycra anymore however!

Bobbi73 · 16/07/2025 19:53

My 75 year old mother in law wears shorts, flip flops, denim jackets etc. She is in amazing shape and looks great. I’m 52 and wear shorts and short skirts. Not as short as in my twenties admittedly but I have no intention giving them up

TheChosenTwo · 16/07/2025 19:54

I’m 40 and wear above the knee skirts but not mini skirts. I also wear shorts that are shorter than my skirts but I feel more secure in shorts!
Size is irrelevant but if you feel comfortable in them then you’re never too old for them.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 16/07/2025 19:55

If you have got a decent figure/nice legs, you're never too old IMO.

FestivusMiracle · 16/07/2025 20:09

I am 52 and I still wear shorts and short dresses. I have good, slim legs.

I’d stop if I didn’t feel happy about my legs, that’s all.
