Mini skirts- when is one too old to wear them?

Hi everyone,
Just after opinions pls.....
I wear shorts and mini skirts a lot in the summer, I am very comfortable in both. However I am 'mature' shall I say. I am of small build UK size 8 or 10. I have just recently started wondering ...'am I too old to wear such attire?'
Any thoughts would be very welcome....thx :)

My friend still wears mini skirts at 78. But she wears thick tights or leggings with them plus knee high boots normally so it’s actually more of a colder weather outfit. She always says no one wants to see her saggy old skin so that’s why she keeps more covered up with it. She’s very hippy-ish but she looks fantastic. She doesn’t look like she’s trying to be 25 if you know what I mean. She looks her age but just stylish.

I'm quite fat but I've got nice muscley legs and I wear shorts, short dresses and mini skirts. I'm 43. I'm not stopping.

LoveSandbanks · 17/07/2025 20:48

Do you not think the older you get, you've earned the right to wear what you bloody well want!

Nobody's going to tell me I'm too old to wear a mini skirt, not now and not in 20 years times

I stopped wearing them in my late twenties. I'll wear skirts above the knee, preferably with opaque tights.

But mini skirts nah ... Theyre not exactly comfortable either. Sit down and have bare flesh, stuck to a chair

Arrestedforit · 17/07/2025 20:51

Who cares? Who do you want to care?
Wear what you want, so long as you couldn’t be accused of indecent exposure.

Screamingabdabz · 17/07/2025 20:52

I think it’s a good legs issue rather than an age issue.

sandgrown · 17/07/2025 20:53

I think you can wear whatever you like and feel comfortable in however some knees don’t age very well . Knees can be an age giveaway just as hands can.

Doone22 · 18/07/2025 07:22

I'm 54, fantastic legs so I still wear them

LlynTegid · 18/07/2025 07:24

Age is not a reason to wear them or not.

cupfinalchaos · 18/07/2025 07:27

I’m in my 50’s and wouldn’t as my knees don’t look great anymore. I don’t think there are any rules but I’d rather wear something that looks good on me.

RunningJo · 18/07/2025 07:41

I’m early 50’s, I live in shorts in the summer, I also run in shorts.
I don’t own mini skirts, but my skirts and dresses are either long, or mid thigh. Just because I prefer this style on me.

Wear what you want, if it feels comfortable then go for it. If people want to judge, let em!

BuntyBeaufort · 18/07/2025 13:25

If you’re going to feel self-conscious and uncomfortable don’t. If you’re not, do.
Simple really.

DonaldJohnTrump · 18/07/2025 13:48

I'm knocking on eighty and I still wear mine. most days. That's why I sit behind a bigly desk! Wink

Butteredtoast55 · 18/07/2025 13:55

I've looked in most of my clothes and there's no age label in them so I will just carry on wearing what I like, thank you.

Disturbia81 · 18/07/2025 14:08

I’ll be wearing them forever.

Why does that matter?

Why do you have to have good legs? I’m only getting muscly defined legs in my mid 40s but I’ve always worn them.

lovenotwar149 · 18/07/2025 15:51

I went out in my denim shorts and a vest top today, I felt great!
Bought a black denim mini skirt a few days ago....I'm def wearing it with confidence! Thx ladies!!

I think it depends on whether or not you’re wearing tights or not

I stopped wearing mini skirts with bare legs when I was late 20s. However, I will still wear one with opaque black tights now in my late 30s

I also still wear shorts (obviously without tights!). I don’t know why I wear shorts but not mini skirts. I suppose because they are more comfortable and look less tarty than a mini skirts.

IcedPurple · 18/07/2025 17:39

It's not about age. It's about what looks good on you. For example, Brigitte Macron is in her early 70s and looks fab in a mini skirt. On the other hand, you could find women in their 20s who look terrible in one.

If you're lucky enough to have good legs then you'll likely be able to rock a mini for many years, as legs tend to maintain their shape even age, unlike arms which start to get flabby early on.

Does she wear mini skirts? I’ve seen her in skirts above the knee, but they are not really what I would describe as mini skirts. I was thinking of short skirts in the 16-18 inch range

JohnTheRevelator · 18/07/2025 20:22

If you've got the legs for it,go for it,I say!

I am glad you wrote that. My mini skirt is not as short as the shorts I wear , that I am wearing very confidently and comfortably. However the new black mini skirt I have recently bought , which I havent worn yet ...but I will, is actually longer than the shorts. But like you mentioned, its the 'association' with mini skirts looking tarty that I think I have ingrained in my head too. Current conclusion - I'm ditching that narrative now and I am wearing both my shorts and 'longer' black mini skirt too! I'm doing this...I'M DONG THIS!!! lol!!

I suppose it’s because mini skirts are designed to be sexually appealing to men, much more than shorts, which are worn by both sexes. Think of all the caricatures of the young women bending over and flashing their knickers.

I think this is why I wear shorts, and mini skirts with black tights, but not with bare legs. I want to feel like I’m appropriately covered if I’m wearing a mini skirt.
