To be clear, what Vance is describing here is a Putin-style system of state capitalism. Oligarchs have to align themselves with Kremlin priorities to maintain their wealth and influence. If they challenge the state, they face bogus investigations and pressure to force them out.

Jason Hart
@jasonahart
JD Vance identifying himself as part of "the postliberal right" and saying, "there is no meaningful distinction between the public and the private sector in the American regime" at a May 2023 ISI event with his friends Patrick Deneen & Heritage Foundation president Kevin Roberts:
https://x.com/jasonahart/status/1953491575989772760

Loyal oligarchs are rewarded with access to state contracts or monopolistic opportunities, creating a symbiotic relationship between private wealth and state power. They can only operate within strict boundaries set by the state, such as the ban on "promoting LGBT".

They are kept in line by government regulations, tax policies, and selective law enforcement to discipline them and ensure their alignment with state goals. That's how Russia ensures there is "no meaningful distinction between the public and the private sector".

Needless to say, it's a system which guarantees a high level of corruption and cronyism. The government chooses who wins and loses, purely on political grounds, regardless of actual market conditions.

How this ends up is visible from what Russia is currently going through. "Raiders" supported by the Kremlin are seizing companies arbitrarily to bring them under the control of Putin's allies. It's leading to much of the economy coming under the control of a few powerful people.

How do we “agree a peace deal”
when the president of Ukraine is not in the room? What a bunch of Billy Big Balls twats.

The Lincoln Project is saying that Putin has something on Trump because he used to “screw anything that moved”—possibly underage girls—and will blackmail Trump to withdraw support for Ukraine.

I'm a little wary of this "Putin has something" on Trump narrative. It could just be Trump is just a massive cunt and doesn't need anyone to twist his arm into being that.

Just to be parochial for a moment, I don't think Rupert Lowe is acting out because some hidden paymaster is directing him. That's just him.

JoshLymanSwagger · 09/08/2025 13:22

Who knew that The Handmaids Tale would become a format for the future or in another 50yrs a historical documentary...🤬😢

CaveMum · 09/08/2025 18:47

Russia doesn’t give a toss about Trump: they broadcast nude pictures of Melania on State TV on US Election Night.

I mean we know 🍑 doesn’t give a damn about Melania either, but if he wasn’t going to react to that then he’s not going to react to anything.

Whether that means they “have” something on him, I don’t know. Perhaps it’s more to do with financial dodgy dealings than anything else, but don’t forget Trump wants to be the richest guy in the world, and, so the stories go, that is currently Vlad. He wants to mix in those circles, he admires any man who goes out and just takes what he wants.

Sky breaking news that they’re considering inviting Zelensky to Alaska, good of them seeing as they’re hoping to make a decision, about, you know, his actual country…

I’ll be on holiday in the Canaries but I fear I’m going to spend a good portion of the day watching the news on the iPad!

TokyoSushi · 09/08/2025 22:53

Although I suspect the whole thing is very much another Putin wind up… 🫠

Spandauer · 09/08/2025 22:59

I can't see this happening - but if Zelenskyy were to get a seat at the table it will be harder for Putin to manipulate The Orange One I think. If he's invited but not included then what's the point?

Trump is considering inviting Zelenskyy to Alaska where the head-to-head with Putin will take place, NBC reports, citing a senior US official.

Yes. On second thoughts, I think they will likely take the opportunity to ambush/browbeat Zelenskyy again. 😡

But I can't see Putin agreeing to Z being there particularly as Putin will be on US soil - so at a 'disadvantage'.

OP posts:
Igotjelly · 09/08/2025 23:17

News seems to be suggesting that Putin and Zelenskyy are unlikely to be in the same room at any point.

Serpentstooth · 10/08/2025 10:22

They'll come to an agreement- already agreed between them - and attempt to impose it on Zelensky. Together, they may succeed in browbeating him into agreeing where it failed before. Sad that JDV can't be there to ensure Z says 'thank you'.

countrygirl99 · 10/08/2025 10:57

Clearly they've learned nothing from the aftermath of the colonial carvery up of Africa and the Middle East.

I've got a horrible feeling they may try to impose 'agreement' and see how much outcry that causes, as a test of international response to stealing Gaza. Still tentative but they're desperate to push that through. Might is Right. Or perhaps I'm just paranoid.

logicisall · 10/08/2025 14:11

I'm waiting for the next move in the "freeloading UK agrees to buy more US drugs in bid to avoid Trump's tariffs" drama.
Followed by a headline about more taxes as Rachel tries to balance the books.
Today's politics is draining.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 10/08/2025 15:00

I found this an interesting take. I mean, of course it’s true, but I hadn’t quite realised to what extent the people who voted for him must have believed he was competent (and have no idea why they ever believed that was the case for a multi-casino-bankrupting business numpty).

Trump's Unforgivable Sin

Voters have proved willing to tolerate corruption, but there's one thing they won't ignore.

Trump is a showman who writes his own bigly headlines, and many people just read headlines.

I didn't become interested in investigating Trump's history as a businessman until he wanted to build a golf course at Menie. By that time, Trump had already left a trail of bankrupt casinos/hotels, and debts for counties after building golf courses using contracts that hived off debt responsibility to other parties. Turnberry, his profitable UK golf course, was rumoured at the time to have been bought with Russian money.

I would imagine that the majority of people who voted for Trump did so because they believed his lies hype that he's a canny and successful businessman, with a grasp of finance, and so would be able to deliver a better life for them.

More fool them that they're only now finding out that he's a conman with both hands out for what's in it for himself and his family (and friends).

The big question is when will the Democrats be organised enough counteract his lies and distractions?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/08/2025 16:10

Turnberry took quite a while to start making a decent profit at all: in 2022 it reported a pre-tax profit of £571,000, making that its first profitable year since its acquisition in 2014. And that means he didn't own Turnberry when work started at Menie? Because that started in 2010, unless I am badly mistaken (and I don't think I am).

Trump bought the land at Menie in 2006, work started in 2010 and finished in 2012. He bought Turnberry in 2014. I meant that at the time Trump bought it, rumours abounded that he was a front for Russian money. Sorry for the confusion.

The Menie development caused a lot of upset and division at my workplace at the time, between those who believed that he was bringing jobs and tourist money to the region and others, like myself, who didn't believe his lies hyperbolic claims.

I will never forgive the SNP for overriding local Council opposition to give him the green light, especially that Alex Salmon now says that given what he knows now, he would have acted differently. FFS, l'm no one and I was able to find out that Trump was a liar.😡
