Celebrity deaths that shocked you

Which celebrity’s death do you feel shocked at?

I would probably say Robin Williams. Which is probably an obvious one. George Micheal and Bowie also.

Thought he denied that ever happened

He phoned 999 at the time and said he thought she was trying to kill him. When the police arrived, she admitting hitting him. He later changed his mind and said she didn't do it-like in many domestic abuse cases.

Was shocked when Delores o’Riordan passed, she was so young, not even 50.

I felt sad when I heard about Brian Wilson recently.

Hitting someone is quite different to trying to kill someone. Sounds like it was a very intense situation and he panicked and when on the phone to 999 he justified his call by exaggerating what happened. He wasnt a weak man and she wasnt a particularly strong woman so there would have been nothing stopping him leaving or overpowering her.

Natasha Richardson’s death really hit me at the time. She was in her 40’s and had the sort of accident that could happen to any of us.

Redlocks30 · 01/07/2025 07:49

@Tidekiln he was asleep when she attacked him-that's one of the factors in why the police thought it was in the public interest for it to be more than a caution.

If she wanted to harm him she could have got a knife from the kitchen and attacked him. She checked his phone, found evidence of cheating and in a rage through the phone at him and then some sort of fight ensued. She also harmed herself.

Philip Seymour Hoffman - broke my heart. Possibly the greatest actor of his generation.

So many of these deaths, including the suicides, are attributable to drugs/alcohol. It's so incredibly sad.

Gerry Ryan, he wasn't big in the UK but one of the most famous faces in Ireland. He was a broadcaster and extremely popular. He died suddenly in his early 50s. I remember at work someone shouted it out and we were all getting out of our desks looking up the news.

I remember it so well , I listened to him every morning and that day it was so strange finally looneys prophetic words about him. My husband called to tell me the news it felt like a death in the family. My cousin called later to tell me because she knew I adored him. I actually cried , he was such a big part of my weekdays .

She definitely did harm him. That would happen when you throw a phone at someone which resulted in that person bleeding. She admitted this. Also, it’s clear he was in danger when he made the 999 phone call.

How is it clear he was in danger?

I don't know why anyone was shocked about Steve Irwin - surely his habit of irritating wildlife instead of respectfully observing it made it only a matter of time?

Very saddened, but not shocked - the Queen, Matthew Perry, Whitney.

Shocked and very saddened by such wasted lives, who (to me at least) weren't 'signposted' as being on the wrong track - Heath Ledger and Cory Monteith. Heath Ledger was such a talent, and still makes me sad to see any of his films.

I couldn’t sleep that night .. I had my ‘transistor radio’ on under the pillow .. (showing my age here ) heard the news and woke up the house … no one believed me and told me I had had a horrible dream and to go back to sleep … it was 5am .. I was 16. He was our hero

That's probably the first time I can recall going into school and it was immediately apparent something had happened that had changed the world. It was palpable everywhere you looked.

We weren't quite old enough to remember the Beatles directly. But there were enough older brothers and sisters around that we knew it was significant.

However in a testament to the resilience of youth (that maybe we should remember and celebrate) a couple of weeks later I remember we were all complaining about hearing "Imagine" every five minutes.

Unbelievable. Imagine the uproar and how he would have been portrayed if he had 'overpowered' her.

As I say the narrative would be completely different if it was him that struck her and she called the police and then changed her mind.

If he was in danger he could have used his physical strength to put himself out of danger. I'm not sure what the issue is with that. Yes perhaps the narrative would have been different if he had hit her but there are reasons for that.

It was a shame Caroline Flack didn’t get the mental health support she so desperately needed, but imo it was absolutely correct that she was charged with assault.

Yes if you hit someone then regardless of the sex of the people involved then you could be charged with assault. What I dont agree with is people saying you shouldnt feel sad at her suicide because she hit someone, or putting her in the same category as a man beating his wife to the endangerment of her life. There are differences.

During the 999 call, he asked repeatedly for help to be sent to him. He also said: "She is going mad, breaking stuff, just woken up, she's cracked my head open".

lcakethereforeIam · 01/07/2025 10:24

Dermot Morgan, that was so sad and unexpected. He'd just finished filming Father Ted and was excited for his future. I'd love to see the alternative universe where he didn't die.

Robbie Coltrane; another talented, principled man.

Redlocks30 · 01/07/2025 10:27

Yes, I agree.

If she'd been let off with a caution and they got back together and then she'd hit him/someone else over the head again whilst he was asleep (a key point here) with something harder and killed him-there would be outrage. That's why charges are pressed even if the person who is assaulted later decides they don't want it to be or that they change their mind, it's really important that happens.

Of course, it's still sad that a life was lost here-she was clearly very troubled, but an assault prosecution was entirely appropriate.

Well of course cracked his head open is just a tad of an exaggeration.

Agreed - Caroline flack needed to be charged. But once again I suspect it was the relentless media coverage which was the issue. It can take a huge hit on someone’s stability.

another sad death - Delores o’riordan, singer of cranberries

Yes it would be bad enough dealing with a court case relatively privately but the nation knowing your private life and whole career at stake and relentless hounding by the press, would be tough even for someone without any mental health concerns.
