Celebrity deaths that shocked you

Which celebrity’s death do you feel shocked at?

I would probably say Robin Williams. Which is probably an obvious one. George Micheal and Bowie also.

Rick Parfitt - he died on Christmas Eve but his death was overshadowed by George Michaels on Christmas Day. So many music people died that year, it was awful.

Real shock was Gary Speed, the footballer. Such a tragedy that was never quite explained. Left a wife and 2 young sons.

Yes, and her second husband after him passed away from cancer too I believe, very tragic for her.

I forgot to add Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman - both giants of British acting.

Kobe Bryant – Died in a helicopter crash with his daughter (2020)

@lcakethereforeIam almost forgot about Dermot Morgan, a very talented comic and not just for Father Ted either. He has so much potential. Apparently he was at the wrap party and went pale and said he needed to go home and died that night. I can't imagine the shock his colleagues experienced. Very sad.

@lemonraspberry Dolores death really shocked me actually. I thought she was a fairly sensible mother type, I was surprised she was taking drugs at that time of her life. Poor kids.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, already mentioned upthread was another surprise. Amazing talent.

Yes it would be bad enough dealing with a court case relatively privately but the nation knowing your private life and whole career at stake and relentless hounding by the press, would be tough even for someone without any mental health concerns.

Yes-it's a double-edged sword isn't it. Being in the public eye like that brings the fame and money which is well-received, but also means that everything you do is 'out there'.

Yes. Even just sunbathing and a pap gets a picture of you at an unflattering angle or something 🙈

Really saddened by Gerry Anderson's death.

Shocked and saddened by Chris Cornell.
I cried, as a teen, when Kurt Cobain died, but somehow I found Chris' death much much sadder. You think that, by his age & stage of life and with a family, he would have been past all the angst and despair and substance abuse etc. that engulfed so many of his peers.
I feel such pangs of sadness when I think of all those bands I loved in the 90s.
Richey Edwards' presumed death is incredibly sad, too. It must be a living hell for those whose loved ones have disappeared. At least with a death you can process it in some way.

John Peel I still miss him not just the music but his home truths R4 programme which accompanied me on my long Saturday morning drives home.

Terry Hall dying was really sad. Especially when you think of what happened to him when he was young.
It feels like he was cheated of the rest of his life.

George Michael the most. I was gutted. I know some people think it strange people get upset over someone they don’t know. But George’s music is the soundtrack of my life - all of the happy stuff, particularly growing up to Wham! And then his other music has been there for me no matter what - I listen to him loads still. I know he had some problems while alive but to find out what he had done for charity without wanting anyone to know was just bittersweet. He also always seemed to have a good sense of humour - things like Carpool Karaoke, being in the Catherine Tate show and then Extras. I loved him! And his voice was perfect.

I was also so sad to hear about Victoria Wood and Sean Lock. And Patrick Swayze, being a young teen in the Dirty Dancing era.

But you did know George Michael. His music came from the heart.

Im with you, but recognise it's still not proven and with all this Diddy stuff and MJ apparently having nothing to do with it, who knows....

He had nothing to do with it because he had his own depraved set up at Neverland.

Spidey66 · 01/07/2025 13:40

Another for Peaches Geldof. An echo of her mother’s death.

and while I wasn’t shocked given her lifestyle I was very saddened by Amy Winehouse’s death. So young and talented and her death was so preventable if only she’d said ‘yes, yes, yes to rehab.

tobee · 01/07/2025 14:03

Those that were murdered are pretty much the most shocking to me. So John Lennon, Jill Dando and Jo Cox and David Amess, I felt very differently about them when they were alive. But the manner of their deaths....

Elvis ripped off black people's stuff so his death was no loss. He wrote nothing himself and profited from black performers who had been largely ignored in a racist society.

2:35

"Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant shit to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Mother fucker him and John Wayne"

Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and 10 years after her, Chuck Berry and Little Richard, three great African pioneers of rock roll, now their deaths are worth mourning.

Muhammad Ali, another great African, is one of the greatest individuals who ever lived. Telling the white settler entity america to go fuck itself was beautiful (as was throwing his Olympic medal which he won representing his oppressor in the river). His death was a huge loss to humanity.

I loved Muhammad Ali 😢

The cricketer Phil Hughes, I think because I watched it happen; one minute he was a completely healthy young man playing at the top of his sport and then next he was effectively dead (he was resuscitated but died a day or so later in hospital without regaining consciousness). He was hit by a ball in the neck which compressed and burst an artery, which caused a catastrophic brain bleed in seconds. He could have faced a similar ball a million times and it wouldn’t have hit him where it did, it was such terrible bad luck. He seemed like a really lovely guy too, it was just all really sad.

Yes that one was so shocking! The freak accident that happened despite all the safety measures they have in cricket these days.

Similarly Adan Johnson , the Nottingham Panthers ice hockey player killed in a horrific freak accident in front of so many spectators. A neck guard may have saved his life.

ARichtGoodDram · 01/07/2025 15:03

Jules Bianchi was a shocking one. In F1 you know there's the risk, but collision with one of the trackside vehicles isn't something you expect

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 01/07/2025 15:59

Phil Hartman
Steve Irwin
Princess Diana
Naya Rivera
Robin Williams
Brittany Murphy
Karen Carpenter
Chadwick Boseman
Lance Reddick
Patrick Swayze
Michael Landon
Elvis Presley
Cory Monteith
Freddy Mercury
Matthew Perry
Bob Saget
John Denver
Anthony Bourdain

Another few I just remembered: John F Kennedy and Robert Kennedy.
Danny Thomas, Mary Tyler Moore, John Belushi.

I know I have forgotten so, so many over the years.

These are the ones that made my heart saddened the most and I could remember, though I am sure there are many more. There are many more that have shocked me and were sudden. To me, each one did not deserve how they died. JMHO

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 01/07/2025 16:08

Dennis Wilson, Andy Gibb, Owen Hart (my son was watching that PPV), Sharon Tate.
