Celebrity deaths that shocked you

Which celebrity’s death do you feel shocked at?

I would probably say Robin Williams. Which is probably an obvious one. George Micheal and Bowie also.

Terry Wogan-brilliant man, Richard Whitely- the countdown presenter - Keith Ledger, River Pheonix. Princess Diana, Maggie Smith - I know she was older but so amazing x

DiscoBob · 30/06/2025 21:00

Aaliyah or Lisa Left Eye Lopez. They were shocking.
Heath Ledger I guess but he was very troubled.
It's hard to think of ones that are really shocking. Most of the time it's someone who's led quite an unhealthy lifestyle or had MH issues.
Loads are really sad, like Amy or Kurt. But not exactly unexpected.

ToWhitToWhoo · 30/06/2025 21:01

John Lennon, David Bowie, Amy Winehouse.

John Smith.

I don't know if they should be called celebrities, but I was very shocked by the murders of Jo Cox and David Amess..

TaggieO · 30/06/2025 21:02

A couple of American musical theatre ones, although they did some tv and film too. Gavin Creel. He was so talented and so young! Nick Cordero, who died horribly from complications as a result of COVID, having been hospitalised for more than 3 months, and leaving a young toddler. So incredibly sad.

Caron Keating. I was at peak Blue Peter watching age when she presented it, and I loved her. I think I didn’t quite understand/ know how to process what had happened to her.

JackJarvisEsq · 30/06/2025 21:04

Sean Lock’s and Fernando Ricksen’s deaths saddened me the most.

John Lennon. As it was the one and only time I have seen my Dad almost cry.

I couldn’t sleep that night .. I had my ‘transistor radio’ on under the pillow .. (showing my age here ) heard the news and woke up the house … no one believed me and told me I had had a horrible dream and to go back to sleep … it was 5am .. I was 16. He was our hero

Wasntmeanttobelikethis · 30/06/2025 21:10

George Michael, because he died on Christmas Day and at the end of the year when so many celebrities died
He was so talented and young

WimbyAce · 30/06/2025 21:13

Stephen Gately, completely out of the blue. So sad.

Genuine question, why "obvious"?

I think just how he came off during interviews didn’t reflect how depressed he actually was. Hence why it was shock for a lot of people. I know many people were shocked when they found he died and had committed suicide. But his public persona was very different to his private life. As are most peoples. I think it really brought home that you never know what someone is going through even if they appear happy.

It was awful and then all the disgusting speculation that he must have died due to a gay sex act 😡 even if he did it would’ve still been tragic but it was pure homophobic assumption

MaudieAtkinson · 30/06/2025 21:17

Philip Seymour Hoffman. He was never less than superb. Imagine what was still to come! Much missed.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 30/06/2025 21:19

@Mysa74 yes he was adorable wasnt he I remember him from that series ‘taken’ I was so shocked when I read he had died

mambojambodothetango · 30/06/2025 21:19

Oh yes, Jo Cox was a real shock. The way she died and how unexpected it was for an MP to be attacked in the street. Made worse that she was so young.

Oh I see what you mean. I didn't give it any thought TBH, he was one of a great many celebrities for whom I did not dislike, but hadn't really given him much consideration beyond that. I remember at the time there was a lot of noise made about depression and suicide etc. I was more sad about him thank shocked.

I can think of a few celebrities where I was shocked they lived as long as they did, considering their lifestyles. I think the only death that really troubled me was that of Princess Diana, and not so much the fact she had died, but how it happened. It all seemed so surreal.

How did I not know this about Mark? What a sad ending x

It was sad, from what I remember he blamed himself for his partner's death and then killed himself.

DopeyS · 30/06/2025 21:22

Mysa74 · 30/06/2025 17:38

Heath Ledger and Stephen Gately... And poor Anton Yelchin.

I found Anton yelchin's death incredibly sad.

They’d taken drugs together and she died 😨

BlueEyedBogWitch · 30/06/2025 21:23

I cried when Peaches Geldof died. I just thought it was so sad.

It was, so young and with such little kids.

@Mysa74 Steven Gately was a shock, and then soon after Kristian Digby. I'd forgotten about both of those.

There was a vile article in the Daily Mail at the time, it was implying all sorts of stuff, deeply unpleasant but the Mail has form for this sort of stuff

GoingToEgypt · 30/06/2025 21:31

Aviici. So young and talented

I remember it, vile 😡

gottabereallyhonest · 30/06/2025 21:35

I remember more recently being shocked that Anna Karen died in a house fire that started in the bed she was in at the time. I find the causes of death much more shocking than the fact someone has died. It must have been so distressing to wake up to that and unable to move. And to get to 86 and die in an accident like that, as opposed to an illness...it doesn't stack up.
